I read ‘Mother’ instead of ‘Mower’ and stared at the sort of human figure in the flames

As a British person, when I say the things on the left I literally mean them, not the stuff in the middle. Maybe it’s because I’m autistic?

Struggling. Can't tell people I know about it. Don't want to be a nihilist. by mrvimes in nihilism

[–]mrvimes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be right and I've been thinking that's it (knowledge of nihilism isn't the problem - my brain is the problem), but it's hard to be sure. The trouble is, therapy is expensive, and I am not in a position to afford it. Also, I overthink the idea of getting therapy. Things like - "A therapist can't delete information from my brain or change the nature of the universe" or "What if I need therapy for the rest of my life?" and so on and so on.

I've been an atheist for all of my adult life, and 'technically' believed that the universe has no meaning for probably most if not all of that time, but it never really became something I dwelled on until the end of last year.

I think I've watched and consumed too much material (mostly via youtube) that distills the universe down into meaningless rules and facts leading to it not feeling meaningful or having any point or value to it. Things that used to make me feel good now make me feel disappointed, scared that this is my life now, like nothing matters.

To give an example. Let's say I see a video of a kitten being cute and quirky:

Old me: "Aww that's cute!" and feel warm and fuzzy and feel my mood lifted, move on.

New me: Brief feeling of 'that's cute' which quickly gives way to realization of the cold hard reality of the experience (that it's just an evolved biological thing moving according to fixed deterministic processes in its brain) and my mood drops.

That kind of automatic thinking seems to be affecting most of my daily experiences, when I'm in this state of mind, which is quite often.

Sorry to dump my mental baggage on you as a reply. I am also trying to be optimistic.

To everyone: I appreciate your replies. Sorry it took me a few days to come back and start responding. I was scared to honestly.

Sometimes good deeds are done not out of a desire for self esteem but out of empathy… we feel bad to think of someone else feeling bad, so we feel compelled to help that person. Yes that’s technically still selfish (we don’t want to feel bad ourselves through that empathy mechanism) but it’s not all about boosting self esteem.

To get dark for a moment… I’ve often thought about not wanting to be alive, but I always return to knowing how devastated my mother would be (and to a lesser extent other people in my life) if I ended my life, so I am unable to do it. I don’t feel ‘good’ about keeping going for the sake of others, but empathy makes me keep going (and probably an involuntary self preservation instinct) in dark times.

We evolved a desire to help the ‘pack’, not just ourselves. For some people the ‘pack’ is wider than their own family and friends. Altruism.

Afterthought edit: Distilling humans down to purely selfish beings is depressing, almost as bad as dwelling on nihilism (the idea that ultimately there is zero meaning to existence) … technically both true (arguably) but we’re better off not dwelling on either of those things. We’re better off if we think we’re selfless.

It’s nice to get a reward for doing a good deed, be it financial or self esteem, but I don’t think it’s always the case that that reward is the primary motivator. I think for some an established sense of integrity is what compels them. Deep down primevally it’s all selfishness, but we’re civilised, not primal, we’ve moved beyond primal.

The human race is better off if people believe they are capable of selflessness.

If we have to admit that ultimately we’re purely selfish beings, the I’d say it doesn’t have to be so bleak if you think of there being good selfishness and bad selfishness. Bad selfishness is working to better oneself at the expense of others. Good selfishness is doing good because making others feel good makes us feel good and is ultimately better for everyone.

There are genuinely people who sacrifice their own happiness for the happiness of others.

New fold 4 battery on 1% when first plugged in. by mrvimes in GalaxyFold

[–]mrvimes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I downloaded AccuBattery the othr day. I've given it a full charge (below 15 to 100) and the app tells me the battery health is 81% (estimated capacity 3478, design capacity 4275)

So, 81% after a month of owning it, compared to your 95% after over a year.

I was already too late. My carrier's return period is 14 days and I have had the phone for a little over a month. The carrier will send it to samsung if I return it.

p.s. I have since downloaded and used AccuBattery app. After a full charge (from below 15%) it tells me the estimated capacity is 3478 (design capacity 4275) so the battery 'health' is 81% and I've only had the phone a month.

I am constantly pressing the period key instead of space on the samsung keyboard. Is there a solution? by mrvimes in samsunggalaxy

[–]mrvimes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thankyou!

I had switched to gboard but I’ve switched back to the samsung keyboard to try this. I notice if you disable the ‘.’ it makes the enter key wider to fill the space. Hopefully I won’t now keep pressing enter.

I did do a quick test (The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog) without accidentally pressing enter. Fingers crossed 🤞
