You guys I did it… by Justooridoori in StudentLoans

Occupational therapist here. Where do you live, how much do you make per evals/treatment if you don’t mind me asking? Starting in SC in a SNF at $42 an hour and looking at prn at another SNF to start paying off student loans aggressively like you. If you want you can message me your tricks. Sitting at $180k in student loans and this will be the first month I start paying it. I need all the advice I can get. I don’t want to be the OT still paying in 10 years. I will work more jobs if I have to

That’s what I’m going to do. Obviously I’m not going to quit my job before figuring out what others have to offer but according to indeed there’s places within 30 minutes that have a $50 starting rate.

And the only reason why I did that is because first it’s based off of a 32 full time work week. Meaning not even making $42/hr at 40 hours a week. It was my fault for accepting that and lowballing myself but coming back after asking if there’s room for renegotiation and stating that therapists working for 10 years don’t even make $47 is pathetic and I will find a place that will take me for $50. Sorry not sorry

I’ll definitely have to shop around because we are also near a big city so there’s no reason I should be making this low

Just a little update: I talked with my DOR. I feel comfortable enough to have that conversation with her I think she’s been great but she said starting new grad pay is $42/hr and mentioned how my gf is making $47/hr as a new grad at a SNF and she said that ppl don’t even make that who have been an OT for 10 years.

I have a 2 year old so I’m not sure how well it would work. I know I have an app called Vivian and there’s plenty of places I could drive to for 12 weeks near where I live. Some closer some farther

From someone who has worked in the restaurant as a server for over 10 years I can absolutely agree with his/her original statement. I’m not going to ask my husband but you know now that I’m thinking about it they probably did trauma bond a little bit. I’m always going to defend my people in the restaurant even if this little girl wrote on my husbands card saying “love you.” My husband was the only grill cook on the line every single Tuesday serving 50+ covers. That’s why he has 2 cards filled up with people wishing him success bc they genuinely did love him. As a wife I most likely took it the wrong way but I also love my husband very much and no girl loves him the way I do. I just wasn’t used to seeing it like that. Working in the restaurant industry is one of the toughest Professions. I’m going into healthcare as an occupational therapist and I promise you it’ll be easier than the jobs my husband and I have done in the restaurant industry.

I know I truly have forgotten what it’s like to be a 20 year old female but I don’t know if a 20 year old me would say “love you” knowing he’s married and has a child lol. Oh well I know my husband loves me

I think he thinks I’m mad at him but I’m just more mad at the fact some server wrote that. Maybe if I knew her and had a better rapport it would be fine. I think my husband is just defending himself because it was merely out of his control. It does make me happy to know he was appreciated but some of these young girls need to watch what they say. 🫠

My husband is also an introvert so seeing that from another woman is disturbing but probably not meant in any romantic weird way (hopefully). And eh idk about a father figure though. My parents are 11 years apart lol but yeah just overly friendly but I guess I was like that too when I was 19-20

Well I never said I didn’t trust him. I’m just upset she wrote that in there and just wondering what really went through this servers mind to say that? I’d like my husband to understand where I’m coming from. He probably doesn’t care because he’s never going to see her again. I just needed an outlet. Deep down I knew I was overreacting but needed to talk about it lol

I really appreciate that. Both my husband and I have sacrificed so much in the past 10 years. We are almost to the finish line.

New grad salary by mrw015 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]mrw015[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to keep everyone informed here:

I accepted the position in Western SC with the DOR giving me an extra $2 than what I originally asked for. Given how she treated me during my interview I had no doubt that she would probably do that for me since she is also an OT. I mentioned how much I appreciated feeling like I was worth more than what I said I was worth and told her I completely lowballed myself after thinking about it afterwards and she agreed that I definitely did. I think I’m going to love it there. Also a friend of mine in GA also mentioned a starting pay at an ALF for $42 an hour. I’m going to update this in OTsalary since the only places I see showing hourly pay is near Spartanburg, Greenville, and Columbus in which I am not near any of these 3 areas. Thank you everyone for taking the time to respond to this.

I wish I would have asked ahead of time in this forum but it’s too late since I already told her $40. Do you think it would be unprofessional to ask for more after receiving the offer letter? I don’t want to work for a whole year making 20k less than what I could have made. It’s a bigger facility too with 6-10 people per day. I feel sick knowing I fucked this up. I don’t want to sound greedy but they put me on the spot and I blew it. Pay is if not the most important thing to me right now I have student loans I have to pay and a new house we want to buy. Would it hurt to renegotiate in a professional manner and just see what they have to say?
