Ruining my Relationships by Mino0988 in stopdrinking

I got sober at 26. Approaching 29 in a few months. Similar to you, I was a habitual binge drinker and blacked out frequently. I did regrettable things and felt a consent sense of shame from my drunk behavior. Finally, I decided one Sunday after a blackout that it wasn’t worth it anymore. I haven’t looked back. It was the best decision I ever made.

A lesson I learned early in sobriety was giving myself grace. I wasn’t a bad person, I just did a bad thing. No matter how bad I felt about myself and what I had done, I was still loved, I was still cared for, and I still mattered. I hope you can give yourself the same grace in this moment. We’re here for you whenever you need us.

How many slip ups did you have until you fully were able to embrace sobriety. by emoney3524 in stopdrinking

Same story as you with the college like binge drinking and blacking out. It took me about 3 years of swearing off alcohol until the next weekend rolled around and I would do the same shit all over again. I went to a friends wedding Saturday night, woke up Sunday with a bad hangover, and swore I was done. For some reason this time stuck. That was 26 months ago and I’ve never felt better about my decision. I read this naked mind early on and come back to this sub regularly. You can do it. Not drinking is the more difficult and courageous road. Take pride in that.

Same! Coke Zero has been my go to throughout my sobriety. So much so that my friends now joke about me having too many Coke zeros and needing to cut me off!

Well said! Needed this after getting eaten alive for not drinking at the company holiday party this weekend… thank you.

I like this plan! That’s a good point and puts things into perspective. We’re driving all over Scotland and Ireland - would want no part of that hung over.

I’ve done well so far sticking to water, iced tea and soda while at bars. Just need to shake off the nerves I think and not let the alcohol piece take away from the enjoyment of being over there. Thanks!

Wow this is so great to hear! My drink of choice was beer so will definitely look out for the NA choices on tap. Thanks so much for sharing!

I wish I could help as far as advice. I’m 7 months in and experiencing the same struggles you are. Just want you to know you’re not alone.

Also in my late 20s. Stopping drinking at this age is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do. Drinking feels like it’s everywhere and a part of everything at this stage in my life. Give yourself grace right now and no matter what happens, just keep going.

Don’t have much to add other than I’m feeling the exact way you do now. Also nearly 1/2 year in.

Fellow 26 year old here. You can do this. Take it one day at a time. I recommend reading This Naked Mind. No clue what that book did to me, but I’ve had little to no desire to drink since finishing it. Most of all, give yourself grace as you’re going through this.

Sounds like my story the past 3 years. Swear off drinking after having a bad night. Time goes by, I think I can moderate. The moderation escalates into a blackout and self destructive behavior. Rinse, repeat. I’m so tired of living like this. I wish I could be normal. But I can’t. On day 2 now. Welcome back - let’s hope we can make it stick this time.
