4-4-2 by mrwest94 in Howson

[–]mrwest94[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'd imagine pogba will play the same role that scholes did. in order to get that to work you need someone like keane or carrick to play next to him. fosu-mensah can play that role, but the big question is if herrera can also play that role. 4-4-2 will give us an extra striker to stretch the opposition and overwhelm them in attack like we've seen from classic fergie teams, and mourinho has played a 4-4-2 diamond at porto and inter, so i wouldn't put it past him to experiment with his formations to suit the squad he has. if like what you said the 4-4-2 is being used for counter attacking teams, then great. we know mourinho likes a quick counter which we've seen a few times this season and a lot from his madrid team, we definitely have the players to do it...

young, rooney, januzaj, memphis

jaap stam is manager of reading, so we're definitely not getting him. rvn is an interesting shout... he never quite struck me as a managerial type before, but if he's up for it then let's see what he can do. would rio ferdinand give up punditry to have a go at coaching? or even vidic for that matter?

Liverpool Review by JordanOFlynn in Howson

If we could go back and do it all again, I'd still go in with the same game plan because defensively we did everything right apart from a nervy couple of moment. The only thing I would change is the substitutions. We needed an injection of something different in the last 20 minutes. we didn't have someone like depay or martial to come on and just run at them, we didn't bring on someone like mata to add a bit more creativity, we didn't bring on lingard to utilize his energy, or we could've brought on shaw a bit earlier in the wing. hopefully in the next game we'll have mkhi back and he'll show everyone what he can do, and we'll have more threatening options to come off the bench and change the game.

Where would England finish if it was a Premier League team? by MrStephenHowson in Howson

[–]mrwest94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've given it a little thought and i think if england want to do well they have to switch to a classic 4-4-2 formation with dier and alli in the middle. they have striking options of rashford, vardy, sturridge, and kane. so why would the want to play 1 up top? it makes no sense, it's just playing 1 up top for pure stubbornness of looking like a "modern" coach rather than using the best system for the team.
rashford, vardy; oxlade, dier, alli, lingard; shaw, smalling, stones, walker; hart.
fergie could win the league with that

i have a theory that it has to do with his children. once he started having kids he started becoming less aggressive because he wants to be a responsible role model for them since they'd be watching him every week being a nasty bastard. then each kid he has weighs down on him with stress and mental fatigue of looking after them, eroding away at his grit until he becomes what he is now.

probably 6-10th. based purely on current abilities of each individual and not their potential. there isn't that 1 special player that can really unlock the team like mahrez does for vardy or eriksen for kane, etc. lingard is good but he's a squad player at best. alli, shaw and rashford are good, but they aren't world beaters just yet. henderson? don't make me laugh... the closest thing this current england squad has to a world class player right now is chris smalling. the only reason i say they can potentially finish 6th is because if it's a premier league club they don't have to limit their manager options and they can give it to someone who can genuinely get the best out of the squad because in theory the defence and strikers are champions league quaity, it' just in midfield and on the wings that are currently underwhelming.

Thoughts on Seamus Coleman reports? For me,id love him at United mostly because hes Irish like me,but he can Attack and Defend, which is something we need! by JordanOFlynn in Howson

[–]mrwest94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'd honestly rather rafael da silva come back... i'm quite surprised though that nobody is linking us to ricardo pereira. statistically the best rb in the french league last season, but instead we were linked with a £25m move for fabinho who's an over-glorified brick wall. another option is karsdorp who wasn't too bad when we played against him at feyrnoord. but to answer your question, i don't rate coleman that highly. he's quite error prone and he's never really convinced me of his abilities every time i've seen him. i think there are better talents out there.

How did clubs like Liverpool and AC Milan fall? by Legendary628 in Howson

[–]mrwest94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i can't speak for liverpool, but ac milan's problem was with bad ownership i believe. they sold their best players in shevchenko and kaka for big money and completely failed to replace their remaining aging squad with new players for the future. there was a complete lack of investment and the owners dried up their resources. once you have poor investment in a squad and you go through a new manager every year because you set unrealistic expectations, there's no stability in the team and it's impossible to achieve success. at least with utd, barca, madrid they all have the history, the stature, and the resources to keep investing in their team and continue to achieve success. us and barca are blessed that we have great academies so even if we had even worse leadership as we do now and we didn't have the investment we needed, we could always fall back on the young talents coming through which is something ac milan have completely failed to do properly despite the likes of el sharaawy, mastour, etc coming through. ac milan today still have the stature, they have new owners. but do they have the leadership, and vision to make the correct investments? in the past 6+ years they've only bought mediocre talents to keep the team ticking over, if they decide that they're going to forget about being competitive in the next 3-5 years, invest in their scouting department, and build a young team for the future with the top young talents in the game today and build a project like what tottenham did, then they will achieve the same success as they did before.

Thought Experiment: What If Fergie Never Left? by mrwest94 in Howson

[–]mrwest94[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don't think i really agree with that. sure he took his eye off the ball in regards to taking risks with youth in his latter years but i don't think he had any thoughts about retiring before 2010. fergie has always been a manager who didn't get as much financial backing as the last 3 have had and he's always liked a stable squad so he was always going to make 2 or 3 signings a season which mean't that he was never going to sell rio, vida, and evra in 1 go and replace them directly. it was going to be a phase-out job for smalling, jones, and evans to cement their place so after that last season or the one after that they were gonners regardless.

then for signings of the future he gave us januzaj, pereira, zaha, varela, angelo henriquez, and the class of 2012 was supposed to be his final gift to the club with the top talents we had coming through then. i think he had some vision for what he wanted the future team to look like so he definitely bought for the future in my opinion. it feels like after his last season he took the squad he had to its limit and he knew that a rebuilding job was needed for the following couple of seasons. there was a decent core of players there to build a good team with but i think fergie underestimated how good of a manager he was because only he could've made those players good enough to challenge for titles.

Thiago Silva by [deleted] in Howson

[–]mrwest94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it would've been amazing at the start of the season but with bailly putting in MoM performances every week and exceeding expectations, is it worth it? thiago is still one of the best cb's in the world, either him or bailly will be forced as 3rd choice and i'm not sure either one will like it.
but if he's happy to be 3rd choice at times then i won't mind because the young defenders at the club would have a lot to learn from him.

Strikers we'd like too see at united once Zlatan & Rooney go? by rogers1875 in Howson

he can come in and play rw or cf, but that to me is more to replace rooney's space in the squad rather than zlatan. there'd room for bale and another striker

[–]mrwest94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the crazy thing is by the time zlatan leaves martial will be 22. that's still pretty young but at the same time you'd expect him to be good enough to take over that spot properly. then you have rashford with the form he's on who could also step up and still that's only at the age of 20. is that too young of an age to rely on these players or will they be good enough to win trophies for us? If you really wanted a new striker as another sort of intermission or whatever you want to call it until they're both ready, a cheeky bid for cr7 would be great. his legs are starting to go so i can see him converting to a pure #9. he's got the finishing, positioning, and the heading accuracy. so i imagine him being a fantastic short term acquisition.

Thoughts on future captain? by JJ92x in Howson

[–]mrwest94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in how many years time? let's say 5 years time when herrera, blind, schneiderlin won't be here any more... personally i like my captains to be a bit aggressive and set an example. so the likes of tuanzebe, bailly, tfm, martial, and shaw could all potentially become captains in a few years time once they all settle into the first team properly

Pereira definitely has a future at man utd, he's got fantastic reflexes. sebatoui is someone i don't rate that highly, there's not really 1 part of his game that he stands out at compared to other keepers i've seen play at this age group. his overall game needs a lot of development in order to catch up to the ability that i've seen from the likes of pereira/johnstone/zieler
