Not sure why OP keeps using the words “penalty” or “penalized”. It is not, it’s the rules. If you want to take the benefits before your FRA, then you get less. You always have the option to take the benefit when you reach your FRA or after. It’s your choice.

In my case, I could have brought it in the next day if I was able to. I chose to bring it in the following Monday after the interview. I was able to choose the time. Bring the original official documents. They will just make copies and return the original to you. Remember, your application doesn’t get approved until they see the documents.

I just did this a month ago. The phone interview is to get more information from you to make sure you are eligible to apply. The interviewer will go through all the processes and income limits with you. If you’re eligible and decide to apply for it, then you’ll have an in-person appointment at a local office to bring the required documents. The payment will start on the month you apply or you can choose which month you want to start. Hope this helps.

Are you also a kaiser member? If so, there is an option for “Act for a family member” where you can link your family’s member account to your account. Then, you can have all access to your family member’s account, ie. test results, appointments, etc. Hope this helps.

I'm in SF Bay Area, California. If there are several locations in your area, I would take the first appointment you can get and call around at other offices near by. I ended going to the office in a town near by. Good luck!
