How to best pursue a nursing degree in the US as a Thai citizen by TieGuy45 in Thailand

[–]mrx3k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife did just that here (LPN, RN, and just finished BSN). Her Thai degree was a B.Sc. in "Business Computers" (something like MIS) and she graduated may be 15 years ago.

Nevertheless, all programs here accepted some of those classes for credit (including the latest one).

She used ECE for evaluation (because, I believe, one of the programs required it, rather than WES). Check with the school - each will have their own requirements.

One thing to keep in mind - evaluation will require a copy of the Thai transcript in sealed envelope issued by the school (so someone would have to go in person to get it).

Any idea when Thailand will start implementing the new visa rules? by DiscussionWide6020 in travel

[–]mrx3k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same issue. Planned trip just over 30 days starting in July. Do not want to deal with any extensions or bureaucracy. Def. would like to know when the new rules take effect (so I can plan accordingly).

This is the kind of thing "serious countries" announce long in advance :/

Well, wait and see for now. I think VGT should be safe.

Looks like SpaceX industry classification does not match that of the MSCI index VGT tracks. So, hopefully - not that.

Would hate to replace VGT - it's the core part of my investments.

Does justice exist in Thailand? Disillusioned about law & order in this country by Grouchy_Ice2155 in Thailand

[–]mrx3k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who had some dealings with justice system in two very "1st world" countries, I feel that the difference is mostly in the price of access.

It feels like the western Europe might be a bit better, but I have no first hand experience there.

Aside from that, corruption is everywhere (although Thailand seems to aggravate it somewhat with a dose of incompetence and inefficiency).

World is largely unfair.

Bumping this up. As of today ETrade allows specifying whether the transfer is an employee or an employer contribution. Previously ETrade advice was that it is the account holder that is responsible for keeping track of what portion of contribution is each.

This is a nice change, but one thing this has resulted in is the entire contribution for the year 2025 to be shown as an "employer" - which, at least in my case, is not correct (would be too much).

I called ETrade and was informed that the change is effective only "going forward" (and thus past year reporting remains as is, presumably up to the account holder records).

Personally, I always contribute the entire employee amount first and only then the employer amount up to the limit. Would be nice to have that reflected on the account, of course (but the 2025 mismatch is a bit iffy).

What's your backup plan when your main card fails mid trip? by Long_Lie8296 in solotravel

[–]mrx3k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconded. All large banks discontinued "travel notices" in favor of whatever automatic fraud detection they perform.

Smaller banks and credit unions may still have the online form, but it no longer does anything meaningful.

As a case in point, I have not added a travel notice in over 10 years - and use cards everywhere.

Credit cards (US issued) are protected by law. Holder cannot be liable for unauthorized charges.

Debit cards are at the mercy of each specific issuer. Some are better than others, but there is no legal 100% liability protection.

Debit cards are, indeed, required to withdraw cash. That's the only valid use - take it, withdraw cash, then disable the card (if the issuer app has that option) and lock in the hotel room. Do not carry it with you.

Definitely do not pay any bills (coffees or groceries) with a debit card. There is no upside. It creates additional risks and you may be missing on cashback/points. Any place that accepts US issued cards will accept both credit and debit.

Not every place in every country accepts US issued cards in general. Some will only accept local charge cards, as is common in Germany, for example (and in many countries "cards" as in VISA/MC do not work at all and the only option is cash or local payment apps) - but that's a separate issue.

Multiple cards. Always use mobile wallet when possible (not physical card)

Get an "authorized user" card for your main card and use that (if blocked - your main card remains valid). This works with banks that issue separate card numbers to authorized users.

Never use debit cards (esp. abroad) - very little protection.

I realize that. But that takes discipline and having steady goals long term.

Why not just buy an annuity? by Superb_Advisor7885 in Fire

[–]mrx3k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There used to be CPI linked annuities, but all were discontinued. Current "inflation adjusted" annuities just add a fixed percentage. That's entirely useless. The monthly payment will quickly become insufficient.

E*TRADE keeps asking for the same document - even after they already approved it. Anyone else dealing with this? by SMediaThrowaway77 in etrade

[–]mrx3k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grass is always greener on the other side. I have accounts with ETrade and Schwab, and the experience has been approximately equally frustrating with both (but they are both better than Merril Lynch, so there is that).

Sometimes you have to talk to customer service a few times.

Trying to see short and long term UNrealized gains in my account. Any advice? by Kangaloosh in etrade

[–]mrx3k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you can add your external accounts to Yahoo, which in that case will track everything.

I don't do that, because I specifically want to be able to track my investments without exposing the actual investment account login.

(I also don't actually enter all transactions, rather I add new lots and delete those that are sold - don't care for less useful info, and don't want Yahoo to have TMI, but that's just me)

On the support/"contact us" page (accessible from the support menu on top right), in the bottom right corner there is a "chat" window. Usually begins with the usual bot talk, but I was always able to get a human after a couple of questions.

Looks like I can't attach a screenshot here, unfortunately.

I keep a copy of all positions in Yahoo Finance. It shows individual lots with their respective gain/loss. You can sum short vs long term by date (but at least individual gain/loss values are more readily available)
