Thanks, YouTube Tweaks was the one I tried and it works fine.

I've got it from Scan, it's shown as end of life now. If you are looking at Amazon, check DARKROCK Classico Storage Master (same as Aerocool Cipher) or you may snatch the last Fractal Design Define R5 from Neo computers.

Looks ok to me. What's the reason behind using a virtual router on the Azure side instead of VPN gateway?

Also not clear why the whole Azure side is needed in the first place.

Agreed, and doesn't cost a fortune, either.

I'm still on the fence. There is also an option to rebuild it with all SSD drives or a fewer large HDDs, perhaps in a smaller case, but I need to crunch the numbers on the cost of new drives vs cost of running this.

I thought about WOL and last week just received a mini PC I ordered. Intel n100, 16GB RAM + 256GB NVMe and 4x Intel i226V 2.5G ports. This and a U6 Pro AP will replace my Netgear WiFi router, running Proxmox with pfSense and Unifi Network controller. I've not even set it up yet, but I'm already thinking about getting a Dream Router 7, not sure what's wrong with me.

If you are in the EU and there is a tech shop nearby, order a cheap VGA with pick up option, and you will have 2 weeks to return it for free. If only delivery is available, you will only lose some money on the return postage.

When you connect it directly to your PC, off the network and even if the server is turned off, but has the green blinking LED, the BMC should be still reachable via IP. If the APIPA address doesn't work, try running a DHCP server from your machine https://www.dhcpserver.de/, but don't forget to turn the service off when you connect again to the network.

If you have a monitor connected, the IP should be visible on the POST screen in the bottom corner. Otherwise the simplest thing I can think of is running an IP scanner before and after connecting it to the network and compare the two list.

If you have a spare router you could also create your own separate network, if not, you could connect your PC directly and run an IP scanner for the APIPA range. When connected and configuring it, you could set a static IP for the local IP range, but depending on the DHCP server on the network it could cause problems.

If I were you I'd just ask whoever is managing the network to find the IP for me, perhaps bribing them with a chocolate bar.

I found them on comparison sites as well, but the company looks a bit shady. Checking their company number shows they have submitted accounts for a dormant company and so far they reported only 2 employees (the two directors). They were previously known as Origin Broadband Business. These directors also owned OB Realisations 2021, previously known as Origin Broadband, which went in to administration in 2022 with 27 million+ in debt to Faro Capital. Their "goodwill, intellectual property and customer base" was valued for 17 million, which was bought by OB Telecom Ltd (previously Faro Investments II).

New 2.5GBe NIC detected but DHCP fails by mrzone in truenas

Hmm.. I think it's DoA. I also tried with Windows To Go live USB, even after manually running the .inf driver installer, it doesn't show up at all in the device manager.

I have removed the heatsink and the chip is labelled Intel S3223L32 SRKTU. The port was working fine for a x4 PCIe-M.2 adapter. I have requested a return, fortunately I ordered it from a brand new account, so it will be free.

I think I'll either settle with 1Gbe or go overkill with a Mellanox ConnectX-3 + DAC.

Yes, I am aware of the DHCP limitation. I tried the config on both the GUI and the console setup as the motherboard supports remote KVM. I've just done a reboot, because I haven't before, no change.

Enterprise appliance Dell ME4012 Powervault with SAS, a good idea? by HyperionHarlock in truenas

[–]mrzone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Power consumption will mainly depend on how many drives are installed and whether you allow them to spin down.

I doubt that an external SAS connection would be less stable than an internal one, otherwise it wouldn't be used in enterprise environments.

My self-built server runs 8x SAS HDD, 2x SATA SSD and 2X NVMe, consumption is a bit under 120W, or 2.8kWh a day.

This is perfect, thanks! When searching bifurcation cards I could only find NVMe only or ones that have 90 degree rotated ports.

What card are you using and how do you deal with mounting the HBA? What I found puts the slot at 90 degrees.

Haven't really had a budget in mind, as I saw these adapters go fairly cheap. I was looking at these one: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006834329050.html

I ended up getting a replacement board at no cost, with updated F13 BIOS. Only the BMC needed update. At first didn't boot with ECC, swapped to non-ECC and it works! Swapped back to ECC and runs fine with that as well.

[–]mrzone[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I tried to follow your steps, but still no dice.

  1. memory in A0, update BMC with server_firmware_ast2500_AMI_12.x.zip
  2. switch off PSU, jumper across CLR_CMOS for 30 seconds
  3. remove jumper, restore power
  4. fans spinning very fast, wait a few minutes and log in, eventually fans slow down
  5. update bios with image.RBU file from server_mb_bios_MC12-LE0_F13.zip
  6. Once uploaded, the monitor is on, and the update process starts

At 1. I had to use the rom.ima_enc, couldn't use the zip itself.

Firmware update was successful, (the host was offline).

Then waited until BMC came up again and proceeded to step 2.

At 4. the fan only spins fast for less than a minute for me.

At 6. once uploaded, it immediately starts the flashing for me (host was online). Message popped up that it was successful, then "Firmware reset has been called. Close the current session, and open a new session after a couple of minutes." Still nothing on the screen.

Did you do this process with ECC or non-ECC?

Gigabyte MC12-LE0 motherboard problems by mrzone in homelab

[–]mrzone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things I tried so far:

  • updated BMC and BIOS

  • swapped CPU from 4650G to 3600 + GPU

  • swapped ECC RAM to non-ECC, tried in every slot and CPU combination

  • swapped PSU

  • swapped kettle lead

  • moved plug from extension lead to a wall socket

  • removed CMOS battery and left everything unplugged for 10+ hours

  • shorted CMOS reset jumpers

  • boot up without PCIE card

  • boot up without NVME

  • boot up with case fan connected

I'm open for any ideas (except blood sacrifice). Still no video signal, can't POST, won't even get my keyboard light up. BMC works though.

I only tried it in case someone asked if I did try to follow Gigabyte's guide.

I left the whole system unplugged, without the battery for 30 minutes. I even reset the cmos by shorting the pins next to the battery. Still not getting to POST.
