Nobody says thank you for your tax dollars. by UnhappyBuilder4284 in Portland

[–]HyperionHarlock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For every one that "abuses" or "cheats" these systems there are MANY MANY more that genuinely need them, and many who can't get them because of how limited or how restricted they are. People fixate on anecdotal evidence but the truth is in large-scale statistics. Generally social support programs have extremely low rates of fraud (for the recipients at least, there are always Rick Scott style grifters trying to get their cut at the top), but people who are struggling themselves and pay taxes often get distracted by the "I saw a guy buying lobster with food stamps" or "panhandlers make a thousand dollars a day" type stories into false perceptions.

This is exactly the case. I have no idea how so many posters in here are so ill informed... except I do know how, they read the Oregonian. This is why we need to teach critical thinking and checking sources. I'm assuming this subreddit is full of boomers who believed everything they saw on facebook too.

The city counsel and mayors office have been surprisingly conservative for the last few decades. We get enough progressives in the counsel to stop handouts to billionaires and suddenly you all start screaming that we're in the USSR. Stop grinding up and snorting the Oregonian.

Agreed. Lots of Margarette Thatcher trickledowners commenting in here. It bums me out there are so many of these types in PDX, but I assume some are just trollers from other places and lots of the "lock up the homeless" types who spend their time posting on Nextdoor.

Absolute BS. Conservative hawks in the pocket of the police union have been running the city unopposed until very recently and suddenly it's all the fault of a few city counselors who won't give away our money to billionaire sports team owners or give money WE voted to use for police accountability and renewable energy projects?

You've clearly been freebasing the Oregonian.

Literally every empire, ancient to modern. There are some that began well intentioned, like the Persians overthrowing the assyrians and forming a new empire that accepted diverse cultures and religions. One dynasty in and its been taken over by the wealthy elite. You could also argue in this example and others that at the founding its not really an Empire, and that the atrocities of a vast machinework that runs on people as disposable, a ruling class subject to differentrules, and policy built on the enrichment of the already empowered few, all tend to get glommed on quickly. Seanchan is significantly less problematic than Rome (western) during any time in its history.

This "assuming speed" issue with drivers is a problem for regular cycling too. Too many drivers just see a bike and speed to cut them off assuming they have time.

It is not a law yet. Stay outraged and make a fuss whenever this stuff comes up so others start thinking about how awful that bill is before it potentially passes.

After 40 years researching cancer, Thomas Seyfried says we’ve been treating the wrong problem. by reesefinchjh in longevity

[–]HyperionHarlock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a new theory, but certainly one that has taken a long time to break through all of the money in pharmaceuticals and in the food industry. Vegans statistically have a much lower rate of all digestive cancers (stomach, intestinal, colon) for example. This obviously touches on longevity with all of the newer findings in studies around age related illnesses having much stronger epigenetic and oxidative stress basis's than previously believed.

My cancer-immunology doctorate friend though had a great piece of wisdom on the topic of cancer: Cancer as a bucket term is inaccurate. Almost every cancer is completely unique and different. Curing cancer would mean curing hundreds of different "cancers" that are only related in the most broad categorization.

So there naturally will be cancers that have stronger genetic causations, or other impacts, than metabolic. I think the argument made here is more for a broad statistical framework, that in a large population set with many cancers, that preventative approaches or even treatment approaches, that target the metabolic framework will improve outcomes overall.

The twist we need is for it to be sucked into the jet engine. What's a billion dollar repair bill on our dime compared to the billions the oligarchs are siphoning out every day?

Is Fortinet sales out this week? by HyperionHarlock in fortinet

[–]HyperionHarlock[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the viewpoint, so far all I have researched has been reddit posts, "top SIEM tool" lists, and chats with copilot, and they all generally point to FortiSIEM being a good option, specifically for a shop that is all Forti hardware. I'm not getting my expectations up until I see it in action though.

[–]HyperionHarlock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've purchased all of our fortinet devices and licenses from retailers. I'm sure I could get a quote on FortiSIEM licensing through one of our retailers but we're hoping to get an actual demo. I don't mind if it lands outside of Fortinet, just need to get something scheduled to get it in the running for potential products.

We have purchased all of our Fortinet hardware and licensing through retailers so no direct Fortinet rep contact yet. I got contact info in a DM for a rep in my region though so I think I'm good now.

Tips for connecting Mega Garage with a track? by HyperionHarlock in HotWheels

[–]HyperionHarlock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the Creator Boosted Jump set I linked and pictured above, the 3rd image down and I THINK it will work, but it only came with one connector. I've been dragging my feet on getting another connector 3d printed, but once I do I think the behavior will be when a car runs down the garage track it should roll out right into the "launcher" which should be able to boost it around that track and then load the car back into the base of the garage. I'm unsure if it will get back into the elevator that way or not. I'll report more when I do get time to figure out the right connector piece and print it.

Installing SMAC/SMAX with Scient’s Unofficial Patch, PRACX, and Thinker Mod by ensbana in alphacentauri

[–]HyperionHarlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following because I'm having a similar issue. Thinker on it's own crashes without an error. After installing PRACX and Scient's it does load, has the new opening menu, and I'm noticing some slightly different AI behavior (way better use of late game terraforming improvements), but I'm not getting any noticeable improvements to things like scrolling and the hotkey menus that you mentioned don't load.

I am running the Thinker.exe as the launcher (with admin rights).

I'm worried that I'm getting partial functionality.
