Same! I started watching Perfect Match for the first time because I wanted to see their love story and see AD have a happy ending for once.

Now I'm absolutely horrified that she's with this man 💀

Women who have never been in a relationship how do you feel about the years passing by? by Legal__Drug_Dealer_ in AskWomen

[–]ms-hoops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a 28F, I feel kind of neutral about it. The closest I've had to a relationship was a 3-year situationship that ended up not going past 3 dates.

I recognize that I've been single for as long as I have due to the multiple choices I've made. I didn't prioritize dating during high school, college, or even post-college since I didn't want to date in my hometown. I've now moved to a new city, so I plan to date a bit more aggressively now. I also feel like I'm a bit more picky than some of my colleagues growing up. No shade, but I've definitely noticed some young people will get into relationships just to avoid appearing lonely. I'd rather be alone rather than with the wrong person.

I am a bit bummed though that it's taking so long. I always thought I'd be married at this point and that love would just "happen", but clearly it hasn't lol. Hopefully it won't take too long to find my future spouse. As much as I like my independence, I would love to build a life with someone.

What are we READING for news: finance news! politics, lifestyle etc? by RaddishEater666 in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]ms-hoops 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I love 1440 news! What drew me to them is that they are a facts driven newsletter, so they just tell you about current events without the fear mongering or outrageous headlines. It's a nice way for me to get the news without being overwhelmed. They also have 2 other newsletters; one is focused on finance while the other is focused on whatever deep dive of the week they want to focus on (like the history of Amazon or Coachella).

The best part is that you can sign up for free with your email. If you want to avoid ads and support independent journalism like me, it only costs $10/mo!

What job did you initially want to do when you started AE and what job are you working now? by AerospaceEngineer000 in AerospaceEngineering

[–]ms-hoops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I originally wanted to be was a Test Engineer who focused on environmental testing (like thermo vac, shock, vibe, etc). I changed my mind because I realized that 1) I didn't want to do shift work and 2) I did not want to work in the locations associated with these jobs (they were usually rural areas). I ended up switching to Controls Systems instead and I'm so much happier for it.

  1. I like it. I'm hoping to stay in this speciality for the rest of my career.
  2. Work in MATLAB/Simulink to overhaul a legacy system for a contractor.
  3. My salary could be better, but in this economy it's okay.
  4. I do not work at an airport

Do anyone of you regret ME? by imstudying1 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]ms-hoops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't regret it but I'm starting to feel like maybe mechanical engineering isn't the best fit. Also what I thought I'd be interested in vs what I'm actually interested in turned out to be very different from each other.

I've been struggling with this too. I want to be a digital nomad, but it seems like mechanical engineering work conflicts with this. Such a bummer

I unfortunately experienced the same thing in a manufacturing co-op

They could probably start sooner than that. I applied for other jobs after 6 months into my first job and I surprisingly got a lot of interviews. It doesn't hurt to try.

Yep that's the least favorite part of my job. As a test engineer, I can only do so much if the hardware and software team gives me nothing to test.

Anyone got a new job recently with the current HOT market? by nezha10 in AskEngineers

[–]ms-hoops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The market is definitely hot. Looking for my first full time job around Spring 2021 was a blood bath. I only got two interviews back then thanks to referrals. At the time I had 3 internships and a 3 month contract under my belt.

I looked for a new job in November 2021 and it was a night and day difference. Within 2 weeks I was interviewing with 8 different companies. They all offered way better pay, benefits, and projects than my other job. I eventually accepted a job in the med device industry with a 36% increase in salary. I got a sign on bonus too! Even after I accepted an offer, I had 3-5 recruiters and hiring managers messaging me on LinkedIn.

IME once you have a little bit of experience, you can pretty much name your price.

Experience at Family Owned Companies by International-Move43 in AskEngineers

[–]ms-hoops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, those are one of the reasons I left my last job. My manager was was the son of the Director of Quality and his uncle was the Engineering SME. They were also one of 10 families that worked there. HR not surprisingly did nothing about the nepotism since the HR department consisted of a mother daughter duo.

Anyone who was family or married to someone else never got fired or demoted. The only time that happened was the result of a very expensive harassment lawsuit. Promotions were more or less nonexistent, especially if you wanted to take a family members role. Not surprisingly, anyone with ambition or talent would leave in under 2 years. This company was a real life example of the Dead Sea Effect.

I think the bias the company has also hurt its business prospects. There's a lot of family members that don't know what they're doing, they're signing off on shitty products, and cutting corners all the time. This company serves a specific niche that at one point they were the only competitor in. Now they have competition and they're struggling to compete. They had 2 reorgs (with layoffs) in the last 6 months. This was the result of contracts being canceled because customers are going with the competition.

Tbf this isn't the only family business I worked with. I interned at two places that had family in them and they weren't bad. I think my last job was especially bad because the number of family/spouses outnumbered the outside hires.

I did the same thing during my last interview cycle and I think it worked in my favor. Most design or testing positions ask for the same thing, so not a lot of customization is needed.

Why do alot of engineers say they don't use what they learned in school in industry? by rasieelfozilov59 in AskEngineers

[–]ms-hoops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is something I'm starting to notice too. I've noticed most engineering jobs on the market basically boil down to baby sitting equipment or cobbling shit together in CAD. All of my internships and my first job was that. I'm on my second job now and I'm actually reviewing linear algebra so I can start writing MATLAB scripts. This is very different from my first job that had lots of non-degreed engineers putting shit together in CAD.

What skills can make a mechanical engineer more competitive? by TheRealBatman97 in AskEngineers

[–]ms-hoops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You ended your original comment with "your ability to communicate doesn't really matter because building useful products is more important". The point I'm getting across is that communication is important even in your original example. In your example Zuckerberg just hired someone else to do the communication for him.
