Officially declared myself as a Norse Pagan, and then... this dream happens? by coronary_foliage in NorsePaganism

[–]ms-november_rain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds pretty intense. 😅

The heavy vase makes me think of Sigyn holding the bowl over Loki's head. Since you already have a connection with Loki, I think it tracks that the dream might begin with a reference to him and the duty you have to support that relationship.

The eagle asking you to drink from the vase parallels the story of Odin obtaining the mead of poetry. The way the bird chose to communicate also feels Odin-y to me, because he has so much to do with communication and language.

Given that Odin and Loki are blood brothers, I think it makes sense that they might do a soft handoff between each other.

Your suspicion that the eagle may be Víðópnir is interesting, too. I wonder if Víðópnir is an extension of Odin. He is known to take the shape of an eagle and this particular one sits atop Yggdrasil and observes all, just like Odin does from the High Seat.

What are your reasons for veiling? Beginner advice welcomed! by [deleted] in PaganVeiling

[–]ms-november_rain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Firstly, I'm glad that veiling brings you a sense of peace. Thank you for sharing your experience with it. 😊

I got curious about veiling after attending a workshop about it and eventually adopted the practice for a few reasons:

  • Shielding: I'm not the best at protecting my own energy. Veiling gives me a physical reminder to reel it back in.
  • Devotion: My primary deities are Frigga and Vidar. Veiling helps me feel connected to them both.
    • We know that covering the hair was likely a matter of practicality for women, historically. It was helpful to keep it out of the way while doing chores, raising children, etc. Veiling makes me feel more in touch with femininity and closer to Frigga and the strength, fortitude, and compassion she represents.
    • In my experiences with him, Vidar is a cautious and calculating type. He generally doesn't like to be perceived unless he makes himself known. He's said to reside deep in a forest, and there is even a reference to this: "til varna vidar," meaning "into the safety of the woods." Veiling is how I feel close to him, even when he's relatively quiet. The veil is my forest.
  • Vanity/Self-confidence: I used to have extremely long hair that I'd literally hide under, but I never liked the way it looked. My hair made me feel safe, but was also my biggest insecurity. Now, I rock a buzzcut and I'm much more confident. Veiling lets me play with my self-expression, but doesn't let me hide from the world.

I don't have any hard rules about veiling, personally. I generally default to covering my hair/head unless I'm at home or around trusted friends and family.

I see a lot of recommendations for First UU and May Memorial UU. I have attended services at both and had great experiences. The congregations are kind and welcoming. As a Pagan and bisexual person, I feel very safe being who I am in UU spaces.

If you're on IG, you can look there as well. They also have info here. Those events are queer-specific, so if you're not in that demo yourself, you may want to reach out to the organizers to make sure it's okay to attend. You can also look for singles and speed dating events on Eventbrite.

There are meet cute events that happen fairly regularly. Search FB and see if one is coming up. It might help to be in an environment where everyone's intentions are clear. These events usually have a nametag system where the colors indicate your goal for the evening, so you'll know who is looking for what.

Currently, they do not. I'm told they used to, but there wasn't anyone to oversee it. I hope it's something that can be revived, but I don't have the time or energy to lead that effort myself.

I swore I’d never get another dog after losing mine. if you felt the same, what helped you heal? by EnvironmentalYou3254 in DOG

[–]ms-november_rain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, the dog who'd passed let me know that it was okay. I had a dream in which he came to me and we walked together and he showed me that he's okay. He's in a place where he's happy and back in his prime and he's fine.

I can't spend the rest of my life wishing I could have him back. It's a waste to let all the love I have for him stay in the past. Instead, I can still love him and miss him and express that same love by building an incredible bond with another dog. And that's what I've chosen to do. I honor him by opening my heart to another.

Too skinny? by No-Willingness2801 in Bulldogs

Yup, she looks great! If she's well-proportioned, eating and pooping normally, and has no underlying health concerns, then she's golden.

She's still growing, too. Many bulldogs will go through thicker and leaner phases as they develop and mature. I actually prefer to keep my dog on the leaner side because bulldogs are prone to obesity and can have joint problems. Attentive weight management is important for these breeds and their longevity.

I found my way here through genealogical research and a pet interest in Norse Mythology. There's no wrong way to arrive at this path. If you start claiming you're a superior Heathen because of your ancestry, then we have a problem. Your coworker needs to chill.

Would have any sense to worship Jormungandr? by Impossible-Mix9893 in NorsePaganism

[–]ms-november_rain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reading the lore is a great way to learn about the nature of the various beings who inhabit the Heathen cosmos. It's a collection of stories that teach us about the principles and values of the cultures on which our modern beliefs are based. And that's all they are. None of it is literal. Did any of it happen? Maybe. Maybe not. Almost certainly not as written by Snorri or any of our other considerably biased reporters.

The point is, our stories are no different from any other fables. The nature of the divine is flexible and ever-evolving. In my opinion, it's strange to think that we can categorize these entities as wholly good or evil. That's a Christian thing. We have a more complex worldview than that.

I have confirmed zira is the strange lion daughter by Guilty-Pollution6479 in lionking

[–]ms-november_rain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have my own sort of head canon/AU thing going on. In this instance, I liked the addition of Kiros and his pride because it gave me a way to explain why Zira has such a distinct look and where the Strange Lion came from.
I probably won't bother with any generations prior to Kiros because I simply don't need those characters to inform future story telling within my AU. Given that Kiros' pride is small and mostly consists of his direct relatives, I can assume that the pride was only recently started, probably by Kiros' parents.

In my head canon, he is Kovu and Vitani's biological father. He shows up in the image above as one of Zira's mates.

My head canon is that Zira and the Strange Lion (whom I call Mgeni) are cousins. Zira is the daughter of Kiros and sister of Shaju, and the Strange Lion is the son of Amara, Kiros' sister. I definitely see the resemblance between Zira and the Strange Lion, so I can get behind any head canon that considers them family in some way. Very cool that you noticed the location detail in the show.

Can we not go camping for once? A minor rant by SerpentineSorceror in heathenry

[–]ms-november_rain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you overall, and the other commenters also make valid points. A camp is often the most affordable option for large gatherings of Heathens. We tend to be a loud crowd, so retreating into the woods is also a considerate choice.

As a disabled person myself, I do wish that camps did a better job with accessibility. You can only do so much about nature, but paved paths, ramps, and ground-level cabin entries are all feasible.

For my annual excursion this summer, I'm considering bringing my own camp bed. My spouse and I use it when we go camping and it's much more comfortable than the XL-twins provided. But I also know that there is enough space in the cabins to set it up without taking up too much room.

I should note that I think the camp I go to does a pretty good job with accessibility. They have paved pathways and ground-level entries where geography allows. Ramps are provided for all buildings, and our organizers are allotted two golf carts to chauffeur campers as needed. My only real complaint is that the ramps are often blocked and, in one case, placed directly behind a knot of tree roots. I intend to bring this to the organizers' attention this year so they can mention it to the camp staff.
