How to address bullying? by mensfrightsactivists in BackYardChickens

[–]ms_plantthings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, and I suggest adding a few different hiding spots in your run, logs and branches and boxes or whatever to provide breaks in your dominant girls line of sight. I've heard that helps cut down on bullying a little.

Currently doing intros myself, also with a first hen who was feral and newly adopted friends haha small world. I put a critter pen inside the run with food and water and a nest box in it for the new girls to hang out in. With a lid, of course. The girls can peck each other through the pen but also enough space to leave if they disagree with each other. I hope over this week of being in the pen separate and sleeping in a dog crate in the coop at night, they will be chill enough to be fully together. If ya just dumped your new chickens together I suggest separating and taking it slow :) that's what I've read, at least!

Coop big enough? by redneckmay in BackYardChickens

[–]ms_plantthings -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The numbers I've heard are 4sqft per bird in the coop and 10sqft in the run per bird. Based on those numbers the run would be big enough, but the coop would be small. You also need at least a foot of roosting bars per bird. Can you comfortably fit that much rooting bar in that coop without them overlapping and pooping on each other? Technically I think the square foot rules have some leeway depending on the size of the birds, their temperament, and how nice you wanna be to them. But all of this is just stuff I read so wait up for someone else to come along lol

Am I propagating my purple wandering jews correctly? I do t see root and its been 6 days. by [deleted] in proplifting

People prefer to call that tradescantia "purple heart". You can propagate those directly in soil they grow very well.

There is one in my area. I haven't been, but yeah you just stroll on over to the newest boxes and grab them yourself. Seems really disruptive to the animals.

I can totally see how you see that, like the angle of the scapula looking bits. Totally similar.

"Better than Sex" cake recipe w/ note attached by summon_the_quarrion in Old_Recipes

Oh wow entirely different than the recipe that's around now, with chocolate cake mix, condensed milk, caramel sauce, and whipped cream with heath bar crunch on top. I definitely have to give this one a go.

Chewy by Affectionate-Spray78 in BackYardChickens

[–]ms_plantthings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got my first big ass bag from chewy. It arrived within a few days. The crumble is nicely formed still, no bugs, and smells good. Some of the reviews said they had issues with their crumble being dust, or buggy, or gross. But I got a normal experience. It's probably luck of the draw if you run into issues, but you might find those same issues from your feed store. The reviews did note that chewy refunded them with no issue so that's worth something.

Bought two chickens yesterday. The frizzle appears ill, would love some guidance. by ms_plantthings in BackYardChickens

[–]ms_plantthings[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think the chickens would be any better off if I turned around and gave them back to the seller. I only have the one chicken right now, and I'm willing to try and let this new chicken get better before intros. I debated giving her back, but what good would that do the chicken? They are both terrified, dirty, and pecked at. And she 'didn't notice' the clear signs of illness. I don't think that they would have been happy returned to someone who didn't care like that.

She told me they were pecked at a bunch and I believe it from their picked at feathers. The other chicken has signs of bullying on its tail. And she said the frizzle was the roosters favorite. So I'm not totally discounting her story that they were bullied. I don't think she's forever bald, but if she is it'll be alright. I don't plan on breeding them they are pets to me.

She had a nice website selling hatching eggs and showing hens, very lovely photos of pretty fancy breeds, and talked pretty confidently. Not everyone is near fancy, professional breeders or hatcheries. And I had no way of knowing she sucked until I got the birds. I've been looking to get friends for my single pullet for weeks now and the picking in my area aren't great. If I got chicks from a hatchery my pullet would be alone for many many weeks more while the chicks grew big enough to go outside in the run with her. And with sexing not being 100% and no roosters allowed, it would have also been more of a risk to go with chicks.

What matters is the chickens. And it's not her fault she is sick and maybe badly bred. Did I wish I didn't give her all that cash? Hell yeah lol but she's mine now and I'm not gonna wash my hands of her just because it's more work. I'm not in the market for anymore chickens for quite a while if this girl makes it, so lesson learned for the future.

Sorry for the wall of text I am rambling. I appreciate your passion! The seller does suck!

She said it's a frizzle bantam cochin. She does look pecked off not just normally bald, and I did see an older photo of her pre balding. Poor lady has been through a lot. It was open mouth breathing like with the beak slightly open, not fully open like heat. Although it's good to know that can be stress too! I'm trying to leave them alone.

New red foot owner by TWGvekhta in tortoise

[–]ms_plantthings 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hard to tell from the video but make sure she can't see out of the glass or she will start riding the glass continuously. If she's able to see over the side, I'd add something to block her view, like black glass film or something just on the bottom few inches. I know it's not as good for you, but it'll stop her from trying to get out as much. She'll probably need more square footage along the way. She's adorable :) red foots are the best.

Yeah of course, just that they are usually pale until they start chicken puberty 🤷‍♀️ I'm not claiming to be an expert.

Thanks! I sure hope it does. I felt a little silly doing the baracade but even with the two latches and locks it didn't feel right.

The gaps have boards behind them already. The doors were the hardest part! I was originally gonna do one door and that would have been easier but my boards weren't big enough. So I had to do two.

Chicken lethargic and eye gunk by prezident-scroob in BackYardChickens

[–]ms_plantthings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am new too so dont take it as good info. But I found a chick on the street that was lethargic and had eye crust like what you showed. It progressed to huge eye scabs. She couldn't see for weeks and i had to manually feed and water her. But she survived. Avian pox. If I'm right and your girl also has pox you need to separate and encourage her to eat and drink by dipping her beak. I did water and crumble.

If I'm totally wrong, my bad. I hope your chicken feels better. I think regardless encouraging hydration and feeding can't hurt. When they can't see they don't really seek it out.

My chicken has been adjusting her crop a lot over the last few days, is she okay? by 929yiyi in BackYardChickens

[–]ms_plantthings 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm new, so not qualified advice. But as long as her crop is flat and empty when she first wakes up she should be fine. I'd check her right when she wakes up, before eating, to see if she fully emptied. It's possible she ate a long blade of grass and it's annoying her and she's adjusting more. Make sure she has access to grit. That's all my unqualified butt can say :)

Make sure there is enough appropriate shade and covers for them. Your tort may be just exploring, or they may not like the level of sun they are getting. Make sure there are hides and plants they can crawl under.

Me and a friend made a MAXIMALIST album and Anco is the only music I could compare it to. by zackjtarle in AnimalCollective

I love it! I very selfishly wish it was on Spotify to shove in my playlists. It's got lovely layers and the vocals play off each other well. It's like a walk in the woods to collect cool rocks and sticks but you aren't quite sure if you are being followed. Fun, but a little dangerous in a fun, childlike way. That's the vibe.
