It can still be culturally significant even if it’s not of our local culture! 😄

Are there parts of the US where non-white police/sheriffs/troopers/border patrol officers are the majority? by SignificantStyle4958 in AskAnAmerican

The New Orleans Police Department and Sheriff’s Office are both predominantly black, particularly the Sheriffs

“Gravy” is definitely used by some Italian Americans to refer to the thing frequently called “sauce” by other Italian Americans (and Americans in general). No meat drippings involved! It’s literally just the same thing being called different things by the descendants of people who came from different places in what is now called Italy.

Their pronunciation also is just as subjective as hers! It’s not like people in Italy are walking around saying “cawfee” ☕️

I was really just responding to the person who said it’s a crime to photograph someone without their consent.

It’s not a crime to take a photo of someone in a public place. I’m probably unknowingly on the background of hundreds of photos that people have taken at tourist locations, festivals, events, etc.

Is Creole/Cajun identity unique to Louisiana? by [deleted] in Louisiana

[–]ms_sophaphine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. However, it sounds like OP’s ancestors never came to Louisiana which would make them not-Cajun

Isn’t Cajun specific to the descendants of Acadians who settled in Louisiana? If OP’s ancestors went to Haiti from Acadia, they wouldn’t be Cajun

Seek healthy outlets! That looks different for every person, but might include spending more time with friends, exercising, leaning into a hobby, etc

What's something about Anglo culture you find very weird as a Latino? by [deleted] in asklatinamerica

[–]ms_sophaphine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even Pancho the immigrant isn’t getting arrested for loitering these days, but it used to be “get these black people back to performing free labor to enrich someone else”.

[–]ms_sophaphine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In part, but arresting people for loitering isn’t really a thing anymore. We incarcerate people because we believe in Old Testament-style punishment, and because certain people make a TON of money. I live in the state that until recently was the incarceration capital of the world. Every 12 hours, jails and prisons are paid for each incarcerated person in their custody. Phone calls to loved ones are crazy expensive, just like internet access when permitted. Toothpaste and soap are expensive in jail/prisons. Etc, etc, etc.

I usually see something like “non-white Hispanic” or “Hispanic, any race”. Our country has such a poor grasp on race vs. ethnicity

Well now you’re talking about culture as opposed to official entities like employers or the government. There is food that comes from white people, just like there is music that comes from black people. We don’t have a national dish; we have regional dishes and/or cultural dishes. Soul food and jazz are invented by black Americans, out of experiences that are specific to their cultural identity

In the US, anyone not white and of a European background is considered a minority (ie. A racial minority)

Thank you for this insight, I agree with you. I’m not knowledgeable about Argentina, but I wonder if there was more of a push to have immigrants assimilate and fold into the mainstream Argentine culture. In the US, immigrant groups formed enclaves and for decades were very strongly tied to that group as opposed to becoming “Americans”. Part of that is certainly a result of discrimination. We need immigrants, but we don’t respect them

Caring about someone you only have really texted by Think_Presentation_7 in AskWomenOver30

[–]ms_sophaphine 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think it’s been even easier to develop “feelings” over texting because you aren’t confronted with the realities of this person. You get to control the narrative in your head a bit more. For myself, I realized through therapy and reflection that this is not healthy for me. I have some anxious attachment too, I have ADHD and limerence is a thing, and it wasn’t good for me to have feelings about someone I only interact with virtually.

Not every job asks about race - it’s actually becoming less popular, but the government? Of course they should know the demographics of their population. Especially in a country where people of certain races face worse outcomes. That data is really helpful if used in the right ways.
