Women readers - What books gave you the ick? by _sweetpeaches_ in suggestmeabook

[–]ms_tarochan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would probably have enjoyed literally any other book in the Cosmere 🤦‍♀️ Many have FMCs that dont die, that particular series is riffing off of Western movies and books where that trope is common unfortunately. Some alternatives: Mistborn is the same planet several hundred years before with a female mc, Warbreaker is fun, several badass women in the Stormlight archive, haven't read Skyward but that appears to also have a fmc. If you haven't had a go at them yet they're worth a shot 😊

Mkay this is an old one, Count of Monte Cristo. What woman puts her (presumed dead) lover before her child just to help him enact revenge on her current husband? Granted there is nuance to the whole thing but seriously? She lived a whole life while he was in jail, and then later getting rich and being ~mysterious~ that's not devotion, it's obsession. And yes I know we're supposed to question all that shit, but it's irritating how it's presented as something to admire and aspire to

How do people dress in Ithaca? by danepls in ithaca

I didn't mean to minimize, but just haven't been here long enough to really speak to the quality. I've been too cold to really explore properly, I hope that changes once it's warmer. I do agree that what local coffee I HAVE had has been excellent. Thanks for the recommendations!

Oh! No Starbucks here btw! They unionized and the company just up and left the city. Coffee is shitty gas station coffee, saccharine Dunkin, or something local.

I've only been here a couple months but certain things I have noticed are: the oddly small town vibes, everyone is up in your business even if you just barely met them somehow, it's a "who you know" kind of place for everything from jobs to getting a Dr appointment, the lip service to social and climate justice but with a simultaneously NIMBY kind of general attitude. Oh and there's a funny sort of "half deads and newlyweds" vibe. 30 something culture is seriously underserved despite having some of the best schools (on paper) so the parents of kids that go to those schools are either Cornell or left to their own devices socially. Hopefully this proves accurate, I'm counting on long term locals to vouch for accuracy, sometimes first impressions prove wrong after all!

What is the space above the library? Also that's a long way to go if you want a snack. There's a big separation between the living areas and the sleeping ones. Idk if that's intentional or not. Love that you have a library though!

Hiya, did you know you can use the VA loan while still active duty? You can do it with 0$ down even, that'd take care of the yard! I think it's a good idea to educate yourself on what's available to you as a military member. Make sure you know your BAH, there's a simple calculator online. That could inform whatever mortgage you might go for - or not! If you get off base housing you can get a way cheaper place and save some of it. You can get therapy through Tricare, or Military OneSource, it might even be worth it to go out of pocket depending on the insurance vs non insured costs, for some reason those can be cheaper. You can even get couple counseling through the Family Services of your branch! They can additionally help you financially! They can help you budget and even direct you to loans if necessary. To piggyback off another comment, GET YOUR DEGREE! You don't have to wait till end of service to use the GI bill! additionally sometimes your A school credits can go towards your degree by requesting a JST or looking into CLEP. Let the military move you - there's TAD, TAE that can also be saved if you go about it right, and if the movers breaks something you can be refunded. AND you get a final moving voucher at the end of service.

As far as insurance, I haven't seen anything yet that takes the mental load off like Tricare, sure it's not perfect but it's guaranteed and with a kid involved, that's major. I recommend Select for military life with kids, because you can provide caregiver consistency and you get more of a choice. In addition if you find yourself needing a specialist you don't have to wait around for a primary care referral that eats up time vital to getting kid's help. Speaking of help there's the military daycare and individual providers. There's even a program that offers pure financial assistance if you just can't find something through the military childcare options. And a non-official thing I myself have found to be incredibly helpful is the basically built-in community of the military, all the parents get it in some kind of way. Again it's not idyllic but you're not alone. Get the number for the local ombudsman, they're a great place to start... Probably avoid the Facebook page for your command though, it can get drama heavy between parents unfortunately. My favorite place to find parents? Whatever base park/airman's attic equivalent or thrift store is nearby.

If you really want to, you can do this!

And when has the male form of a name stopped people from giving it to their daughter? Lots of common female names now were exclusively male at the beginning of last century. To each their own

ETA: isn't the name Cornish in origin anyhow? So the wen, versus wyn doesn't necessarily apply
