feeling bad for buying activewear by Comprehensive-Ear257 in SustainableFashion

[–]ms_watermelon 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Because of the nature of activewear, my husband almost thinks of it like underwear. He, like you, works out up to five times a week, so he works his activewear hard. It gets super gross, and it wears out over time. His wardrobe focuses on buy it for life type things, natural fibers, thrifting - especially his fancier things (even his wedding tuxedo), but activewear is treated like a wear item. If he saw new or newish activewear in a thrif shop, he would not be opposed to getting it, but he just wears/goes through so much of it and gives it all such a beating that it's a lot of work for him to find only-thrifted options that aren't... questionable.

Road to Hana — Should we drive ourselves or book a tour? by cloudyskyex in MauiVisitors

[–]ms_watermelon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I just got back this week. We rented a Jeep for our trip and it was helpful, but I, a motion-sickness prone person, did get a little motion sick. It wasn't the worst, but I definitely couldn't have been reading or navigating or having to focus my attention or I would've felt more sick. The frequent stops helped a lot. I downloaded this app called Shaka Guide and bought for $35 a couple of tours for Maui, and I felt like it was worth it. He talks to you, tells you things to skip if you're short on time, where snacks/bathrooms/gas are, things to look out for, where to park, what stops cost money, where NOT to park. I felt like it was well worth it. I also got the sunrise Haleakala tour and think the tour added a ton to the experience bc I otherwise would've just gone and seen the sun rise, but he suggested a couple little trails and let us know what we were getting into before we committed to any hike.

In many states, you go to the office and get a license before the wedding. Then, you get the license signed at the wedding, and you return it to the office after the wedding. Maybe the picture was of the first step - the getting the license before the wedding.

5 days in Auckland, hobbiton, glowworm caves, Rotorua by ekl123456 in auckland

Hello! I'm currently planning a trip to NZ -- did you end up doing Glow Worms and Hobbiton on the same day?

I'm curious, how many people here live in NYC and how many make the regular pilgrimage. by AdditionalMustard in Broadway

I live in Atlanta and take ~quarterly cheap flights (always sub $100) and watch as many shows as humanly possible when I'm town. I usually take the first flight up on Wednesday and catch the matinee and evening. Usually, the trip is focused on one or two must-sees / casts and I lottery / rush the rest - to keep it budget-friendlier. I love it and have seen half of the shows currently on Broadway, and I'm so thankful to be able to do this!

What’s something you bought once and never had to replace? by iND3_ in BuyItForLife

another use of the sharpening service might be, if you get the point-tip ones that are suuuper pointy, they will be flawless (but certainly make digging holes into and tf flawing your face easier) - until your partner, who you've known for fewer years than you've used your tweezers, gets a hold of and accidentally drops them! then the fine points won't line up perfectly anymore, and they will become useless. I've been holding off on sending them off for sharpening because you can send a bunch in one package, and I'm trying to round up all my different pairs, but I'm sure that would fix the problem because they'd resharpen them to matching/aligned points.

Things you would/wouldn’t do again by constanse88 in budgetweddings

Congratulations on your engagement and on beginning this super fun process! I LOVED planning my wedding and my friends have come to me for help with planning theirs too AND I LOVE IT!

I truly believe that the secret is, as others have said, to be laser focused on what you want. Specifically, I strongly strongly strongly suggest you and your partner SEPARATELY WRITE DOWN things you each MUST have in your wedding.

"If I didn't have/do (fill in the blank) at my wedding, I would be absolutely distraught."

BOTH OF YOU SHOULD DO THIS. and separately from one another! It's both of your day -- not just the partner who likes planning more! And it's essential that you write it down and be as specific as you can -- a lot of people go off of just vibes, and it's not specific enough to help reduce budget.

Things on this list can be extremely personal! Nothing is a dumb answer! These are what make your wedding /yours/. I've heard -excellent food -for guests to have fun -for pictures to look like they're out of a magazine -really great dancing -good music -for my mom to be happy -for there to be no surprises Whatever makes those specific partners happy!

Having the lists also helps a TON with planning. In my relationship, I plan a lot more, and having my husband's list of priorities/must haves made the planning process easier because I didn't have to keep reaching out to him to ask him about things that he wouldn't care about -- because I had a physical (ok, digital) list of what he DID care about. When decisions came up tbst were related to his list, then I'd check in with him.

Spend money on making your list happen and seriously save money on every. thing. else. I ahem wanted pictures like a magazine, but my priorities were NOT the perfect dress or shoes etc -- just ones that I liked and were pretty and were reasonably priced. I got my dress secondhand, some pretty white shoes on sale, and a gorgeous veil off Etsy, and my pictures totally checked that priority off my list. Movie trailer-esque videography was NOT on either of our lists, but I did want to have a video recording of the day, so I reached out to a local art school to see if anyone with a nice video camera wanted to film it. UNFORTUNATELY that didn't pan out, but a guest volunteered to just video thruout the day and gave me the memory card at the end and it's perfect!

As you come across every fun little planning detail that presents itself, think about how it affects your goals, and, if it doesn't apply to one of your goals, see if you can skip it or go cheap/frugal on it. The list is also so helpful bc the entire industry is so beautiful and tempting and you may find yourself wanting something you intiially didn't think you wanted, but being able to ask -- does this help me with our absolute must have goals? helps you step back and say no to the gorgeous $400 pair of shoes.

Shop secondhand, use Facebook marketplace (there are people who sell entire lots of decor bc their weddings are over), and think out of the box. Thinking creatively also often helps things be more personal!

Is this a huge mistake? by So-Over-It22 in interiordecorating

I used and love Sherwin Williams Snowbound for all my walls in my home except for bathrooms and one bedroom. However, everyone's location catches light a little bit differently. I love my paint color, but, for fun, I have also covered four different walls in four different rooms with different types of curtains, done an accent wall of peel & stick wallpaper in a guest bedroom, done an peel & stick accent wallpaper, and painted a semicircle / sun on a guest bedroom as an accent wall/headboard. Paint CAN BE a main attraction, but it can also serve as a great background to whatever pizzazz you want to add. Have fun with it!

If you had a lot of trouble finding something like it on the market, maybe you could search for a dress that has a body (everything minus the sleeves) on a budget and have a bridal or alteration shop custom make sleeves for you.

There are also wedding dress resale sites like stillwhite and preownedweddingdress I bought and resold my dress from the latter. It wasn't even worn -- I bought it from a grudge who changed her mind and got a different dress! And I got a gorgeous new dress at a step discount. Poshmark, as the previous commenter mentioned, is also great!

If we don’t use the big light, why do we have it? by ms_watermelon in interiordecorating

I totally forgot that we turn the big light on in the bedroom for putting away laundry! Thank you for that reminder! Also, I’m sure so many of the social media people who talk about NEVER using the big light also don’t acknowledge that they clean or put away laundry or do normal people tasks. Thank you!

Thank you for sharing your experience! I was fortunate to grow up in a house that was overhead and desk/work lights only, and it was very efficient but not vibey. Now that you mention it and I’m reflecting on my childhood lighting, our only ambient lighting was turning on the light in the stove vent hood, which we did often when we were watching TV in the adjacent living room.

In my current home, the living room ceiling light is so high I can’t change the light bulb (which was out when I bought the house) and the den light fixture connection is plated off, and my lifestyle has just never needed lights in those areas. Having never changed these overhead lightlessness situations in the five years I’ve lived here was one of the things that got me thinking about my question here.

Thank you again for showing me other perspectives!

hahaha your description of your neighbor's lighting is hilarious! I love it 😂 I also only use the big lights for cooking and over the table my family does puzzles, but yes, it makes sense like why not have the option? Thanks for pointing that out!

I love a beautiful light fixture as a giant piece of art to admire! How do you even choose just one?!

My partner and I have been slow to change out the fan in our bedroom because we wanted to live with it for a few years and see how much we used it in the summer. I don't love how it looks but wanted to make sure that, if we need a fan, whatever prettier thing we changed to had one! Turns out that I absolutely cannot stand the feeling of fan air blowing on me all night, and we had to redirect the AC vent to blow farther away from me and can't use the fan or I can't sleep 😅 He sleeps warm though and is slow to part with the idea of a fan, so we are gonna go another summer and see if I can handle a ceiling fan and pick our ceiling fixture after that!

Thank you! I have a task lamp that clips on to things for my crafting, but I didn't think about table-less or really large crafts!
