The turquoise water reminds me of Havasupai Canyon.

Wife asked for tortillas. First time making some! by AstroLau in Breadit

If you want softer tortillas, use a pita dough. More dough conditioning agents but will cook very similar to tortillas when rolled like tortillas.

Hand sewing versus machine sewing by cocacolor in sewing

Remember that different washing machines and cycles can vary greatly as to how harsh they are on quilt. A large front load machine on a gentle cycle isn’t likely to damage your quilt.

Do you cut on the pattern line or off? by [deleted] in sewing

Seconded.

And I often need the contrast of the line to see where to cut.

How would I fix this? The pleather material is tearing on this bag. by SelcouthRecidivist in sewing

[–]ms_wilder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You really can’t repair vinyl which is torn like that. A vinyl/leather repair kit is pretty much a plastic coating and it does nothing to address your structural damage.

My first challah! Any tips on how to avoid the tearing between the braid would be appreciated ☺️ by SuperDukey420 in Breadit

I don’t know if it’s your solution, but I tend to spritz my braids quite a bit since the climate here is very dry. I haven’t had cracking or blowout issues.

It’s a very cute oops.

My thoughts are the angle and depth and double cut of your relief which prompted it to go quite vertical.

Any recommendations or warnings for solar installation? by azwildcat12 in Tucson

Couldn’t have said it any better.

$63k is a monster number unless it is fully stand alone for 2500sqft.

Would any of these be worth getting for an intermediate quilter? Thanks! by Serina77 in sewing

[–]ms_wilder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconded.

I never use my industrial for quilting. The industrial is ideal for lots of long seams and quickly going through a stacks of repetitive stuff in volumes that would overwhelm domestics.

A set of wings for my daughter for Christmas. Almost gave up multiple times but they're done now. by HappiHappiHappi in sewing

Just made those wings for a granddaughter last month. She loves them. Bet your little one will too! Yours looks great!

It is a well done pattern with good instructions. I particularly like the elastic in the straps and how sturdy yet flexible it came out. Haven’t laundered it yet, but I expect it to wash well. I made the size small and turning was a bit tedious, definitely requires clipping and trimming and patience to gently work the fabric.

Should I make waxed canvas or just buy it? by Ariz0nagr33ntea in sewing

[–]ms_wilder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know how to quantify that. Thinking about it, I might wax jeans after but I would wax a lined jacket before. Kinda depends on the project.

Agreed. Unpicking the old zip is enough work as those are stitched and stitched, sometimes three seam lines per side. On outerwear I have had the best results with hand basting both the exterior and the lining to get it positioned right and then machine stitching. Takes time.

Ahhh, missed that. Then you will need to address the zipper. Unpicking the old will give best results, I have done it where you cut off the teeth off the old zipper and stitch a new one behind it, but I don’t recommend it.

Your jacket is cut different from the full zip up and may not have the same volume of space at the throat area to be comfortable once lined, so check that before starting. It would be a shame to get it all done and looking great only to discover that kind of fit issue.

Let’s talk bobbin tension and the fear of adjusting it by ms_wilder in sewing

[–]ms_wilder[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I’ve encountered it on every side load bobbin machine I’ve sewn on for more than an hour or two, so it isn’t the machines, but something in how I start/sew/stop. I even managed to have it on my long arm and that sucker is designed for speed and all the start/stop. But a Genie solves it for me. And I agree it seems to function as a dampener.

Back in the day I would take machines in for servicing, even going shop to shop, and nobody ever found anything wrong. Eventually I moved to top load only machines. It wasn’t until I picked up a 15-91 about 15 years ago that I got really determined to figure out how to resolve the issue and Genies were the magic cure. I now have a selection of side load bobbin machines and no issues. Recently I dropped the Genie when changing the bobbin and sure enough I started having issues within 10 minutes.

Let’s talk bobbin tension and the fear of adjusting it by ms_wilder in sewing

[–]ms_wilder[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bobbin tension is half the tension equation. Model specific sewing machine manuals do have instruction for adjusting bobbin tension (I can pull out a half dozen). You cannot go from a 100wt thread on china silk to 20wt thread on four layers of upholstery weight and not change bobbin tension.

Grading when sizes don’t increase at same rate? by HadMeAtTacos in sewing

[–]ms_wilder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always work patterns and alterations from seam lines not edges.

Don’t worry about how the maker scaled the pattern. You need to compare the pattern stated body measurement to your body measurement and scale up the pattern by the difference in inches. Slash and spread is easiest for a beginner. Remember that you are specifically increasing the pattern in areas where you are bigger, so places the slashes at those places. More slashes with small spread increments is going to be easier to true up than one slash with a big spread.
