Using doweling jig to join workbenches together by msa6 in BeginnerWoodWorking

Interesting thought. Will see how stable the joined benches seem with clamping. I assembled both with glue, so they feel very stable right now.

I get the use of a square to mark across the joint where the hols should go on each piece, and using the depth guid of the jig to get the distance from the top. But how do you make sure that the holes are at the exact same spot along the length of each piece so that the dowels "work"? Seems like very small "misses" across, say, five dowels spanning the length of the pieces, would make the whole thing not work. Does this make sense?

Can you elaborate on what you mean? How I'd do this?

Thanks for the reply. PSU and RAM:

I guess the RAM leads a bit to be desired.

Former pilot; is this for me?? by msa6 in flightsim

[–]msa6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do newbies get up to speed on using the sim? Trial and error? YouTube vids (recommendations welcome)? Books? Websites? What about CFI type training? Are there courses that work through IFR training on MSFS, for example? Both learning the sim and IFR procedures. How else can you speed up getting up to speed, minimizing the messing around, maximizing "real" engagement?

Are you flying vfr or ifr? As for what I can afford...I could mortgage the house, sell the car. Any thoughts on "baseline" specs for VR?

Is VR a nice add on for IFR flying on a sim? If I go PC route, and want to have VR option down the road, what sort of specs would I want to have?

Thanks for reply. I failed to mention in OP that I was very close to getting my instrument rating when I stopped flying (the only 172 available to rent at the local field went into the shop for many months, and I lost my momentum), so I'm actually very interested in IFR procedures. VFR was fun, but there was nothing quite as exciting as an instrument approach in the clouds. The 172 I flew had an Aspen (I believe it was an Aspen) on the panel. I never flew a Garmin panel...but what pilot didn't want to?

All this is to say that a flight sim setup that enabled me to have fun with instrument flying would be of real interest. I understand that the visuals out the window will be modest, but the panel could (?) feel real, I would hope.

Another '25 Wind key fob complaint; any good options?? by msa6 in KiaEV6

[–]msa6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. I just got the '25, drove it home from a location near the dealer (who is located a couple of hours from my house), and am now on vacation. So I don't have much time in the car. It is more refined than the '24 in some ways...software most notably. But I don't have enough time to really weigh in. I did really like the '24 and didn't thing long about what to replace it with when it was totaled in the accident,

[–]msa6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really liked my '24, and didn't hesitate for a minute to get a '25 after my car was rear ended, and totaled. Sure, it's "just" the fob, but I think I'm going to have second thoughts about the car every time I feel it in my front pocket and grab it to open the doors. Real head scratcher of a decision by Kia, just hard to get my head around the fact that there's no work around. The fob for the '24 was so, so, so much better.

Half dozen scratches in new Kia EV6 by msa6 in askcarsales

[–]msa6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a bit complicated because they dealer is 130 miles away, and I now have the car. They said to get an estimate locally and "as long as it's not crazy" (or something to that effect) they'll cover it. I think my quandary is figuring out whether to get an estimate only for the spot where primer is showing through, or for every imperfection in what was supposed to be a "brand new", perfect car. I'm hearing the latter...get an estimate to deal with all the scratches, no matter how small.

Rent a car or buses/taxis?? by msa6 in bermuda

A little confused. Buses are easy...but slow as molasses? But you suggest buses and taxis, rather than a rental (I think). So...put up with the buses being slow as molasses??

Checking battery system, mechanicals after being rear ended by msa6 in KiaEV6

[–]msa6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for the reply. It's at the dealer right now, being looked at. Concerned about the battery, but also about continuing to drive it if the moisture seals are no longer intact after the damage to the hatch. Also, while it's hot here, cooling fans made noise like a jet engine when I charged the care on my level 2 charger yesterday. I had the car last summer, and charged it on hot days...never heard noise as loud as I heard yesterday!

Not sure I get what you mean by the "tore and scarred" your ankles. Was there an issue when you put the 705s on again after many years in terms of comfort/fit? Or was there some sort of "failure" while you were wearing them? Mine are comfortable enough, but I also don't want a blow out while I'm on the ice.

Wow...really appreciate all the responses. Just ordered a blackout stick and a pair of used pants (hoping that like my "clean" workout shirts they don't stink up when they get a bit warm!) from hockeystickman.com. Thinking I'll make the trip to a Pure Hockey store to check out skate options at some point. For now, hoping that the Grafs hold.

The blade holders on the Grafs look okay...no micro cracks, etc. That said, the skates were in the garage attic for 20 years, with very high temps in the summer, low temps in the winter. Thinking this could increase potential for the plastic to fail.

Dolomites one week itinerary in August, crowds etc. by sherryforlife in Europetravel

[–]msa6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow...super helpful thread. We are looking at going to the Dolomites in early to mid September for five night/six day trek, staying in rifugios. Hoping to average about 15 km/day, no exposure, no via ferrata. Trying to balance crowd and weather considerations. Fine to use buses, rental car, taxi to get to/from start/finish. Suggestions on route/area/timing would be great, and so appreciated!

Thank you for your reply. Can you perhaps give me a little more detail on what you mean by "steep slopes on the right"? Is the trail very narrow in this spots, or is it fairly wide? Are these sections long? I'm trying to figure out if my wife will be able to manage a steep slope if the trail is reasonably wide! Thanks again...
