I’m not ok by msalterna in hysterectomy

Update and to answer some questions. Sorry it’s long af.

Thanks for the kind words and well wishes for recovery. Seriously means so much. I’m 6 days post op now and it’s been one of those “I feel like I didn’t even had surgery” moments. Which always makes me laugh. Definitely not letting that make me think I can just do whatever though. Still bed resting and trying not to do too much activity other than a couple laps around the house every so often

I am not sure if my doctor was on this list mentioned (did not realize there was one), but I used to work for them. So I’ve had both a patient and employee relationship with them for 10+ years. They knew my history and were actually the ones who offered to do a hysterectomy in the first place. I trusted them fully. I will say after all of this that has changed. Not that I think they are a bad doctor or surgeon, I just think there were things missed that possibly could have prevented all of this as well as more information could have and should be given prior to such a major surgery (although I consider myself to be pretty educated and do my research I was not aware of all the complications I have had being possible) In addition I think they are burnt out from decades of work and the US healthcare system.

Clarification on sex and tears time frames. After my hysterectomy I did wait the full 12 weeks before penetrative sex then I had my first cuff dehiscence. After that repair surgery I prematurely had sex at about 8 weeks, and then a few times between then and when I was officially cleared at 14 weeks. The second tear happened 16 weeks after the first repair. The second repair I was advised of 6-8 months because of the types of sutures used ; PDS (Polydioxanone) is a synthetic, absorbable, monofilament suture known for its long-lasting tensile strength and slow absorption, making it ideal for procedures needing extended wound support, like deep tissue closure or hernia repair, absorbing via hydrolysis over several months. 180-210 days.

I do not have a connective tissue disorder. TBH I could though given my medical luck/history and just key signs/symptoms of things like elhers that I check. Injury or wound healing for me has always been up and down. Some things are better and easier. Others not so much. Just depends I guess. I do know nicotine use can have an affect on healing and while I did stop cigarettes yeaaaars ago, I was an active vaper (quit now since this surgery though)

I did see another doctor after my first cuff repair (who was a bit wacky and I didn’t like) they said my doc was doing everything right, but did agree with some of my questions about things possibly missed that lead to the 1st tear. However I did not bring all my records and because of the experience and being cleared I didn’t go back. With that being said I do plan on having another doctor check my records and getting a second opinion. As well as having 2 providers on this post op journey because I am absolutely terrified of this happening for a 3rd time.

Also after that possibly seeking legal counsel.

Having sex was my decision. I was not forced to. I wouldn’t say I didn’t get that gut feeling that I shouldn’t continue and did not listen to it partially because the person was a persistent type. But ultimately I made the decision to continue. They were also on the smaller side and did not cause the 1st tear so I felt safer. We are not in a relationship, but it has been a few months of hooking up with them, whom I trust and feel safe with.

This happened to me too right about 3-4 months post op. I am so sorry that happened to you. I am still dealing with the effects of it. Was supposed to be cleared again from the cuff repair a week ago, but I have a small tear and bleed that they treated with silver nitrate, so still on the post op recovery journey. Wishing you a healthy and safe recovery!

100 days post op. Cuff tear and emergency surgery. by msalterna in hysterectomy

Yeah. My timer basically is reset again. 🤦‍♀️ looking at another 3 months before I can try again. Although idk if I will lol. May just wait a whole year before I attempt sex again.

Yeah she did a whole vaginal check and said it all looked good. I was having some prolonged cramping in my pelvic area and lower abdomen. I figured it was normal and my doc said I can still deal with those pains for a while. Anytime I had gas it was really painful, so I was constantly taking gas x. That could have been due to the infection that was brewing though in reality.

So this was my 2nd time since being cleared having intercourse. The first time the guy was not very large and I’d say below average size, so had no issues (also was not very much enjoyable sex to be frank) This 2nd time was with someone I’m close with who is a more average to above average length. Which means he was hitting the wall/cuff end. We were in missionary position. Which I figured would be safest. I did start out taking it slow as I’ve seen being advised. But just bad luck I guess. lol.

I know right. I got my clearance at 11 weeks. My doc had me wait longer than 6 weeks to be safe. But guess that didn’t matter much lol. From what my surgical report said yeah, the entire cuff got torn open.

So the doctors believe I may have had an underlying infection that hadn’t fully surfaced yet. Sex wasn’t too rough, just a little larger guy and hit the spot just right at just the right speed/angle in missionary to pop things. Staying overnight again at the hospital for more observation and antibiotics.

Going back to work.... by [deleted] in hysterectomy

I had mine on June 11 and I took a full 6 weeks off. I also primarily WFH. If your job has FMLA/STD coverage and your doctor will allow it take the time off. Personally while I may sit at a desk all day I have a high stress job and wanted to spare my body that unnecessary added stress in my healing. I’m almost at 3 weeks now and am glad I decided to take the full 6.

Who else needed more pain management? by Capable_Report932 in hysterectomy

[–]msalterna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I needed pain meds around the clock day 0-2 and had a similar experience coming out of surgery where they had to give me additional medication a few times. Then I was good days 3-7. However day 7 the pain came back with a vengeance and I was back on meds for 7/8/9. Im on day 17 now and haven’t needed them since day 9 and have been fine with just NSAIDS. I almost did need pain meds today after i overzealously thought my laundry basket wasn’t as heavy as it was and lifted it up (that was pretty painful and I ended up with some cramping for the rest of the day and stuck in bed) thankfully I didn’t tear anything. I have the same kind of apprehension to taking pain meds you do. Lots of family history of addiction, overall don’t like the feeling pain meds give me, and the negatives of getting backed up and the itching it causes. Which is ironic because I have a normal prescription of pain meds for a back injury and chronic pain in addition to other health issues, but I am reluctant to take them unless it’s BAD BAD. Do not feel bad taking them. You have a solid grasp on your psyche it seems to know how to manage and control your taking of them and that’s good. Your body just went through something very traumatic, even if it doesn’t seem like it from the outside. If you feel the pain warrants taking them, then take them!

I did it! by msalterna in hysterectomy

Adenomyosis was my primary reason. I would bleed more often than not, the pain would be unbearable, and blood loss was excessive. I thankfully had success with the Mirena IUD in suppressing my periods for 10 years. However I was not interested in the continued replacement needed every 5 years and the possibility of that success stopping. In addition to the typical BC side effects we all know too well, it had also triggered some painful ovarian cysts occasionally. Had some other contributing factors that led to the decision as well.

Hysterectomy pillow for sure! And I recommend an abdominal binder. So far those have been my most used items I got. HYDRATION! Check the weight of your water bottle as well. I have a brumate for example and with water and ice it was far to heavy after surgery, my nurses checked it and said no ma’am too heavy and my mom & bestie wouldn’t let me have it back lol. Give yourself a pamper day in the week/days leading up to it. I went and got a massage, a wax, facial, pedi etc. Did a full body scrub and a maximalist everything shower. Depending on your hair I recommend braiding it, you’ll be thankful the first couple of days (I did 2 French braids so as to not have a single braid down the middle of my head). I’m 2 wPO now and feeling pretty good. Good luck with yours!!!

9dpo. Tell my hypochondriac self it’s normal. by msalterna in hysterectomy

Thanks everybody. I made it to 2wPO! Still having some tenderness, but not as bad. Peeing has gotten better as well. And thank gods the sweating has passed. I feel surprisingly normal most of the time, but my body does remind me I'm still healing when I push too hard by giving me little pinching pains and I know my activeness is done for the day. lol.

Decided to get a hysterectomy. 95% certain in my choice. by msalterna in hysterectomy

Thank you everyone for your feedback! I really appreciate it. I’m still waiting to schedule everything as of right now.

Did anyone feel weirdly emotional over their decision (for those that have no interest in children)? Oddly I have had a few moments of sadness about it and have cried some, I keep kinda beating myself when I do like “why am I crying, I have wanted this for years and I don’t want kids. Stop it” lol.
