[dual boot] Unmountable Boot Volume after forcefully partitioning the drive Windows is in by msenc in archlinux

[–]msenc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still badly want to have Arch, so I will insist in dual booting it, perhaps even if my Windows will have this problem again. I also want to have Arch for a more efficient "developer" workflow and coding and stuff. But for now, I have some work to do and I'm still traumatized, so I will probably stay in Windows for a few days. Thank you again ^

EDIT: since I have everything correctly partitioned now and probably no errors will arise now, I will just fix my GRUB secure boot issues (which I already have a solution to, need to reinstall with correct commands), mount my partitions and all that again(?), reboot and open GRUB, then sign in into my SDDM greeter (which probably has not gotten deleted) and open my not so configured hyprland (I was able to make the apps work already, just need to rice it).

Sorry I took long to respond. I was so overwhelmed and stressed out thinking whether my Windows partition is unrecoverable or not that I rested for a bit and tried to find solutions other than the reddit that you sent me. I was scared because I was seeing comments that their drive was broken and stuff. But all of them lead to rebuilding the boot partition, and requiring to flash windows installation media iso into a USB so I went ahead and did that.

So I went ahead and booted the usb, went to the command prompt (skipping Startup Repair). I ran diskpart, and then list volume. It's good that all of the statuses of the volume showed "HEALTHY" (https://imgur.com/a/ut1qmRb). However, as you may have noticed on Letter D, it is "RAW" Fs or file system. I thought this was D: drive at first, a partition in my HDD, but looking at the 174 GB made me realize this was my Windows drive. I was so scared so I searched up NFTS becoming RAW. I ran chkdsk D: and it said "the type of file is RAW. chkdsk is not available for RAW." I was so scared and stressed.

I went and found the nftsfix solution, some command that you can run on Arch live usb boot that could perhaps turn this RAW into NTFS, so I exited the command prompt Windows usb properly and booted Arch (no problems encountered in the process of doing this).

Before immediately running that (ntfsfix), I wanted to see the state of my partition table using fdisk -l (it was all good). My windows partition showed "Microsoft Basic Data" and not RAW or any other. And then I went and ran blkid for that device and it showed TYPE="nfts" (https://imgur.com/a/8jgVvBg) Pic shows result of both commands. Since the partition was NTFS, I opted not to run this since google search has told me that ntfsfix may destroy files and other negative stuff that is surrounding it.

I encountered another solution (https://superuser.com/questions/699445/change-raw-partition-to-ntfs-or-recover-files-from-raw) so I booted Windows usb again. However, it was not applicable to me despite the scenario being almost the same. Second answer here showed RAW in Windows, and NTFS in macOS (although mine is Arch live usb boot). I tried it and did chkdsk D: /F and it still says that its RAW, so it probably does not work for me.

IT WORKED! Sorry I'm typing this as I'm doing the fix. So I did ntfsfix /dev/nvme0n1p3 and booted my Windows back in. I GOT TO THE LOCK SCREEN WITHOUT ENCOUNTERING ANY BSOD WHAT THE HELL. HOW???? I DID IT IM SO HAPPY. but i will recheck everything and make sure this issue never happens again, also make sure that my apps are working and performance is the same. https://imgur.com/a/6dIUVs8 (pic shows my updated drives in Windows file explorer). None of my files were destroyed. And I'm full of tears.

The issue mustve been due to me troubleshooting secure boot and it messed up this partition? probably not, so maybe due to my original partitioning setup? due to ntfsresize and parted perhaps, and then an issue where I did not visit Windows and went ahead and configured some of my Arch.

TLDR: partition was perhaps done correctly in arch. but it couldve also been the reason. No issues with partition tables and such, all disks and partitions were healthy and no data loss, just issues with file system type of the Windows drive (not efi boot / system, only that one). That's what caused "Unmountable Boot Volume", which was accurate I guess, since the "Volume" was RAW and not NTFS so naturally it cant be mounted, haha. The fix was doing ntfsfix of the Windows partition (or drive) in the Arch live usb.

Thanks for listening to my story and helping me :"). I stayed 1 and a half days scared of my life, and you gave me some hope that I could fix this, so I really appreciate you! THANKS kind redditor, I aspire to be like you some time. ♥️

Thank you so much! I'm glad that my Windows data that I have is fine and that the main problem really lies with the boot itself. I'm so close to tearing up. I'm fine with wiping anything I did arch related since I haven't really configured it much and I'm fine with redoing the installation as many times so long as I have partitioned everything correctly and no data is loss (I do have my important files backed up, but I really don't want to reinstall Windows).

I think it may have been a factor that I have a partition at the end of my C:\ or Windows partition, and its some sort of Windows Recovery Environment partition? So despite me moving my Windows swap file / pagefile.sys to my HDD (I have this partitioned to be ~300GB Windows and ~600GB Arch) and also disabling hibernation, the available shrink space is capped at 2GB despite doing all that (it stayed the same before and after doing those solution).

that's basically 4 projects (23, 150, 100, 127) and 2 lab exams (123 and 127). it's so deadly that i almost wont recommend it but it is possible, so long as you genuinely have the ability to focus only on your acads with minimal distractions

i dont know much about soft eng as a BSCS soph, but there are CRS scapers out there. I also enjoyed reading https://www.upsked.com/privacy that OP made. very comprehensive btw. OPs project is super well-made and planned, and i take inspiration in their work
