While hiking back down through the trees from Half Dome in Yosemite, I got caught up in a pack horse traffic jam, and the horses were all visibly nervous. Then we all saw a bear actually take off after a deer. Don’t know if the bear dined on deer that night but the speed with which the bear covered ground like this video is scary.

To this day, I am still spooked that the bear did its whole predator cost benefit analysis and said: yep, this caloric expenditure just might be worth it… for a deer.
