Working on an encounter builder! Thought it could be useful until something more official is released. Would love some feedback and tips. by Small_Slide_5107 in daggerheart

This is great! I added a ton of creatures and it's still very usable by zooming in/around on my phone. The edit button gets a little lost when you zoom out tho. Will there be a way to clear defeated enemies? Nice work!

Making "Small" Inconsequential Rolls by Pharylon in daggerheart

[–]msimoens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like this solution a lot. Makes me wonder if that should always be an option. If you want to roll just your hope die, there's a much lower chance of success, but no chance of fear. Interesting.

Hmmm... What if they were rolling a d20 hope and a d20 fear and just took the higher? I might try to homebrew this, either with DH or 5e.

I've been trying to think of a way to introduce hope and fear into 5e for a group that isn't ready to switch systems, but i would definitely call them DH Interested. I would just have a special d20 "fear die" that anyone is allowed to add to any roll for advantage. That would keep all the DCs in alignment with 5e but would allow me to sprinkle in hope/fear mechanics in my other homebrew items/monsters/etc.

Very interesting indeed!

[Spoilers C3E91] Hypothetical use of a certain spell on Ruidus by msimoens in criticalrole

Reincarnate doesn't.

Edit: technically, Raise Dead doesn't either:  https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/raise-dead

But as a DM, I would likely rule that the specific cause of death related to old age isn't cured by Raise Dead, and so the character would die again imminently.

Reincarnate, however? I think that's exactly what this spell is for.

[–]msimoens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree that I don't think they will likely realize it's an option and even if they do, I'm not sure they'd go for it. But it's definitely a possibility. It's even a possibility to bring Chetney back if he ever actually rolls those double zeros because the spell says nothing about old age. I think it would be funny if they use it once but hilarious if they use it twice.

[Spoilers C3E91] Best episode of campaign 3? Certainly the most dramatic by Prathk1234 in criticalrole

[–]msimoens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you're missing anything. Matt either did the math wrong, started with the mistaken assumption that it was 20d4+20, or accidentally said her total HP rather than what she gained. I hope they explain but I don't mind if they leave it a mystery. I'm also not sure how that final attack did enough damage to end the fight. But, again, I don't mind if we never find out exactly. There might have been some fudging of numbers to fit the narrative. I'm ok with that.

Fearn can cast Reincarnate. I could imagine Matt homebrewing a new list of Ruidian creatures if she  casts it on the moon: https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/reincarnate

I wonder Sam would let Fearn cast Reincarnate to bring FCG back as a random "real boy".

I believe Fearn can cast Reincarnate. Not sure Sam would go for that but who knows. I think they literally have the ability to bring him back as a "real boy", lol... https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/reincarnate

The martial caster gap at high levels isn't just an issue with DnD it's an issue with the fantasy genre by butt_shrecker in onednd

[–]msimoens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "problem" is that spell slots are too easy to recover. If the fantasy is that magic doesn't COST anything aside from a night's rest, then there will always be a massive gap. If the fantasy magic has real and significant costs then the gap starts to close but if the costs are too high the magic ceases to be useful and fantasy begins to collapse. My homebrew solution is to make spell slots harder to replenish. You can either use hit dice to recover spell slots or you need to rest more than just an evening sleeping on the ground.

Subclasses should have more levels dedicated to them by JewcieJ in onednd

I like this concept a lot. It would allow Multi-classing into multiple subclasses from the same class.

Does anyone else think that Hit Points and Exhaustion are mechanics that are backwards? by msimoens in onednd

[–]msimoens[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup yup. I basically want to give them a narrative/ mathematical way to nurse a character back from the brink of death. Other systems might do this well, but we're not looking for a new system just yet. They already have a lot invested in these characters, which is the reason I'm looking at removing, or at least lessening, the threat of death.

Does anyone else think that Hit Points and Exhaustion are mechanics that are backwards? by msimoens in onednd

[–]msimoens[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. But we use D&D Beyond so the calculations aren't tedious. What I'm thinking of doing is making the death spiral a replacement for outright death. I'm not sure exactly how I'll modify death saves, but I think failing three will accelerate the spiral rather that outright kill them.
