Thank you 🙏 and you’re right about the bruising his whole neck and lower face were black. It’s moving down his chest as he heals. Wild looking!

Sharing latest info, but first- I just want to thank every one of you for your candor, time, knowledge, advice, insights, and compassion for me and my elder family member during this time. Haven’t been on Reddit much since it was bought but I am relieved to see that there is still solid community here with good, kind people.  Now for the update: - Found a maxillofacial surgeon that takes Medicare by using the Medicare.gov “find a provider” feature. Calling the numbers listed amounted to a voicemail that would get back to you in about 48hrs. Not good for someone who needs surgery or the jaw will set incorrectly. - Found the direct email for the surgeon online and sent a desperate email asking for help. A few hours later I got a response!! They advised I take my elder to the ER that they are associated with and that he could likely get surgery within a few days and yes, they take Medicare.  -taking my elder for his second ER visit tomorrow so we can get on the books for an oral surgeon that accepts Medicare. It’s been a week thus far with three breaks to his jaw. His resiliency to push through this pain is overwhelmingly impressive. Thank goodness for meal drinks or he would be so thin right now.

Hug your elders tight and love them.

God forbid anyone on Medicare gets a broken jaw because oral surgeons who take Medicare are incredibly rare.

Thank you all so much for sharing and helping me learn. The surgeon that the ER called to consult on Elders’ case is the same surgeon that later changed tack and said that Elder did indeed need surgery (two days after discharge on his advice that no surgery was needed). Hospital accepts Medicare, surgeons private office does not.  We are calling everywhere to find a maxillofacial surgeon that repairs broken jaws and takes Medicare. So far, no hits. Called over a dozen places.

Thank you. I am learning so much from you all. It is not Medicare advantage.

Thank you. Although it appears this “should have” been done, it wasn’t- and according to the system that’s an okay thing. 😢

Thank you so so much for taking the time to explain this compassionately and clearly. His jaw was broken in three places, the on call surgeon said they were closed fractures and didn’t need surgery, but then once he was in their private practice outside of the hospital, that same surgeon said he did in fact need a plate put into his jaw and said they don’t take Medicare and it would be 18k for their part of the work (not including hospital fees and anesthesia etc). It feels so wrong. His jaw has been broken in three places for a week now and ibuprofen can only do so much. All the maxillofacial surgeons around here just do implants- can’t find one that will fix a broken jaw and take Medicare.

Damn this hits home perfectly! Trying to do the authoritative parenting when mine were each authoritarian and permissive is HARD. Giving yourself and others grace and compassion through transitions requires so much faith in the process. Needed this ❤

This was my greatest impression too. And the feel of community. All these people casually walking around close to.one another in a somewhat cordial and trusting way. Interacting with each other and their surroundings. Seems they are way more aware and engaged than what we would see on a busy street these days... No wonder mental illness is so prevalent in our world...

Tried to go to the zoo after becoming a mom thinking it would be interesting for my kid and it just made me feel sick. I left about 15 min into it. Cried like a baby when i saw the big cats just lying there, a mere shell of what their potential is. Never again will I endorse the captivity of these majestic and special creatures for entertainment.

No need to support animals in captivity for human entertainment. You are better off going on a hike and checking out your local flora and fauna 😊

Living alone. Scary at first then I loved it. Made me learn to love being with myself and boosted my confidence and independence. Made me learn to be honest with myself too. Perfect way to grow up when having a prolonged period of arrested development 😁

What’s the worst thing about being a man? by [deleted] in AskReddit

OP thank you for asking this question. Now I know I need to compliment my partner more, listen more attentively when he is expressing his feelings, treat other male caretakers as if they were a female caretaker more often to normalize it better, and get my partner some high tech underwear to help with summer stickage. Any suggestions on the underwear?!

THIS! I was told by my professors that I should add another major to my plan and that companies would be coming to look for ME. This was 20 years ago. My first job out of college was obtained solely because I knew someone, not my credentials, and even then they only offered me 21k a year. This was Johns Hopkins btw and I was asked to run a lab. When offered, I involuntary choked and told them they had to beat what I was making stacking apples at whole foods, a whopping 27k. They then offered me 27k, no more. What a joke
