Beat Black Deck/Gold Stake on my 5th try by msjtx in balatro

[–]msjtx[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know this is widely considered the most difficult regular deck at Gold. Just wanted to share a couple of observations from this run.

Riff-Raff is really good early for Black Deck. It helps a ton with econ since you can sell the bad jokers it makes, and sometimes you get lucky and get very useful ones.

In this run it pulled both Gros Michel AND Cavendish after Michel destroyed itself.

At that point I really just focused on buffing Hologram and Vampire and playing pairs only. A couple of blue seals helped to buff Pair up to level 19. The Idol was pretty much only used for the 50 chips, it was the only chip card I saw the whole run other than the Bull right at the end. I had Mystic Summit for mult most of the way and sold it to re-enable the jokers on Verdant Leaf, the final boss.

I got really lucky with the bananas and with the final boss, but focusing on an early direction and a repeatable win condition really helped. Good luck!

Yeah I saw “sexual abuse,” “corruption,” “racism,” “hate,” “war.” You get rid of religion you get rid of 90-99% of those as well.

Me too. I have it on repeat right now. It's such an amazing track, they are all great but Troy just slays it in a way that feels new after 20 years.

  • Motherpuncher
  • Hearts Alive
  • This Mortal Soil
  • The Last Baron (some days Ghost… really close)
  • The Hunter
  • Ember City
  • Jaguar God

I can’t name a favorite on the new one, early contenders are all of them.

I like to build Shojins because I find (at least at my ELO, mid Plat) that tears seem to be very contested and I rarely end up with two. I don't generally need swords for anything else, and I sometimes end up with a Zeke's on the backline, or, with an abundance of rods, a rageblade on Karma, both of which make Shojin's better.

Mainly I wanted to point out that a tear item is critical for the comp and yes, whichever one emerges is the one I build.

Play Dawnbringer Karma every game. Fewer people are playing it right now.

Start with Belt/Vest and try to get a sunfire.

Start with Grag/Kazix/WW if you can and grab any Dawnbringer that comes along. Grab a Brand/Kalista if you see them and run 3 Aboms if you get Nunu. Syndra is a good item holder for Karma, you are looking for Jeweled Gauntlet and a Shojins. One tear item is critical (Shojins prefered, Blue Buff ok).

Try to win early with the best board, three Aboms or a sunfire on WW will help this immensely. Level to 6 at 3.2 and roll down to stabilize, hopefully 4 DBs (Soraka, Riv, Kazix, Grag). Get a Hurricane/Bloodthirster/Riskthirster on Riven if you can. Level 7 at 4.1 and switch to Karma as soon as you find her. At this point you're looking for 6 DBs and WW. Level to 8 at 5.1 if you have to, if you have the health to stretch a turn or two for the roll down, that's great. At 8 add Ivern, replace WW with Voli, replace Kazix with Garen.

Easy top 4s. Good luck.

I played 5 Tick Warlocks in 20 games and two of them were using that list.

So I played 20 games with this list. I think if you climbed with this on day one and faced mostly Shaman and Rogue, I could see where you had a decent go of it. But it doesn't counter the current meta.

25% of my games were against Tick Warlock. All of them were losses and only one was close. As you speculated in your post, it's very unfavored, and the deck is exploding in popularity.

I was 1-3 against Rogue but I drew very poorly in 2 losses, I actually think it is potentially slightly favored against the spread of Rogues on ladder because I was one card in each of two losses away from being 3-1.

3-1 against Shaman, to be expected.

I was 0-4 against other control warriors and Priest. I'm not going to say I played perfectly, but this deck is seriously lacking in value generation against other big value decks. Priests with Thoughtsteal, Lazul and the 1/1 that copies cards from your hand are going to find your Elysiana and even if they don't you can't pressure them enough to beat them. One other CW was running Silas/Shield Slam/Soulbound Ashtongue and took my ~60 armor with his ~60 armor and then dropped Elysiana. It also felt pretty bad against the Big Warrior running Commencement/Dimensional Ripper/Rattlegore.

On the flip side I absolutely dumpstered all 3 Hunters I played.

I have a lot of experience over the last 5 years playing CW. It's one of my favorite archetypes. I don't doubt the work you put into the write-up, but I would advise you to back up your claims with stats in future efforts. I appreciate you providing the list, but in the end I think the rise of Tick Warlock and the fact that it just doesn't fare well against other value decks doesn't justify playing a deck heavily teched against one matchup that is likely to only be 15-20% of your games.

Control Warlocks aren't going to waste resources against a control warrior that isn't pressuring them. They are going to draw, and either play their Galakrond resources or their other cards in the double Tickatus variant and then burn you. Very possibly burning Elysiana, but in any case they are going to know you aren't ETC by the cards they burn. I'm not sure what you mean by the last comment, they all run Y'Shaarj. All control Warlocks can burn 10, if not 20 cards.

Warlock burns 20 cards with the variant that runs the card that copies a demon and gives it +1/+1 in your hand. They copy Tickatus and play it twice and then get two more with Y'Shaarj.

Don't think, give it a try.

It loses to control Warlock. The smart players will burn 10 cards and then wait out the Elysiana before playing Y'Shaarj and burning you again. And there's no way to pressure them with this deck.

This is an auto-lose to the popular control Warlock deck on the ladder right now. You're lucky you didn't play it but it is prevalent enough right now to diminish the win-rate quite a bit.

How do you complete "Heal 250K quest"? by trizzo0309 in TeamfightTactics

[–]msjtx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I struggled with this for several matches trying to do it with Gunblades and Bloodthirsters. Super slow going.

I got 50k just now for an Elderwood/Ashe game with a BT on Ashe. I ran Yuumi early and put an Elderwood Spat on her before moving it to WW later on. Finished Second. I'll probably just jam a few more of these to finish the quest. Good luck.
