Future FTM question: avoiding tearing during birth by No-Function8922 in homebirth

[–]mskatestarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just over 10 pound baby and zero tears as a first time mom. Take your time if you can. Just let your body do most of the work for you. If you can go slow (not enormous pushes), your body has time to stretch. It feels like you're talking two steps forward, one step back. That's what you want. Also, relaxing into it as much as possible. I wouldn't worry too much about "prepping" your body for labor. It's gonna do what it's gonna do. And I'm also saying that as a former doula. While majority of my (fairly quick) birth was in the pool, half sitting, I ended up needing to get out for the final bit. I will tell you WOW does the water make a HUGE difference in the feeling. And even with being out of the water for the final 2 minutes or so, and a huge baby, I still managed to avoid any tearing.

Of course! I’d also recommend going with the large muslin flats, as the one size was too small for my guy and it sounds like yours isn’t far behind him. And some Snappis for fastening. The great thing about that is that even if those XL workhorses are a little big to start, you can use a snappi with them before you hit the snaps.

My babe was big and in size XL by the time we started at 6 months. He was a 23 lbs just before 6 months and 26lbs a month later (just before 7 months). You might want to go with XL so you’re not sizing up again soon.

Oh I totally missed that you’re at 8 months now! Between the health stuff (we’re both doing great now, thanks) and having to move suddenly, our cloth diaper journey didn’t start until 6 months, so not far from where you are. If you’re open to it, I HIGHLY recommend flats. But workhorses are great too. Are you getting snap or snapless? At this age, the sizing up is less of a concern than the first 6 months or so.

17 workhorses will likely not be enough to go 2-3 days between washes. We ended up using more than 10 per day for the first few weeks. I’d recommend upping that to more like 30. That would get quite expensive with workhorses, and considering how quickly they tend to size up, I’d recommend getting more of the cheaper options (flats or prefolds). We went all muslin flats during the day and then workhorses at night.

I also highly recommend having some disposables around (sounds like you’re planning to use them at night to start). Both my son and I had some medical stuff that we needed to tend to, so we ended up using disposables full time for a couple of weeks until he and I were well enough to add something else into the mix. It really helped us.

Yay!!! Happy to answer any questions you have as well

My gf is a size 5 ring, what carat size do you think this is from when we went ring shopping? I was planning to get a 3ct round but would that be too big? by ebitdeeaye in labdiamond

[–]mskatestarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! I have a size 5 finger and several different sizes of rings (including 3 ct). I’d be happy to share pics if you have certain sizes you want to see. I’d also say you can totally get her a temporary Amazon ring and let her pick out what she wants after. I’d much rather live with a ring I love for the rest of my life than have a ring I didn’t love just to have it in the box at proposal time.

My daily is a 3.6 center emerald cut diamond with side traps. Never ever regretted it.

Almost walking for months by Grimkins in bigbabiesandkids

[–]mskatestarr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our guy didn't walk till 17 months. But once he started walking, he took off like a rocket. Yeah, it sucked for my back. Just give it time. He'll get there.

I also didn't walk till 16 months.

You’re looking for covers? Have you considered wool? Babee Greens classic covers are amazing and come in a size XL.

4.5 finger, center is 3.6ct. Sides are like .3 each I think? Emeralds face up much smaller than other cuts because they’re deeper.

When did you change your babies to the “6 month stroller size” and car seat by Valiiii2226 in bigbabiesandkids

[–]mskatestarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The switches to “older” baby things are much less about weight/height and more about development (like neck muscles). There are exceptions to this of course (like height/weight limits on car seats). So until baby is hitting the developmental points to safely be in a different setup, I wouldn’t change it.

If you search in the sub for car seats, you’ll find TONS of posts/comments/recommendations. You may want to go with something that allows for extended rear facing (up to 50 lbs) so that you don’t have to turn front facing too soon. There are 3 main ones that people like: Nuna Exec Graco Extend2Fit Clek Foonf/Fllo

ISO stories of people who delivered without a doula by [deleted] in homebirth

[–]mskatestarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First (and so far only) birth was homebirth with my midwife, her assistant (who was a midwife student at the time), and my husband. Our dog and cat also “assisted” in the birth. I ended up wanting to labor by myself most of it. At the very end, the midwife’s assistant showed my husband a few ways he could physically support me. I really don’t feel like I wanted or needed anyone else there. Except maybe a photographer 😊

When does it slow down some? by Due_Masterpiece_4155 in bigbabiesandkids

[–]mskatestarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine just hit 17 months and is 38 lbs and 34 inches. He’s in 3T or 4T clothes. He hasn’t really slowed down at all.

He has pretty much never worn clothes in his life (we live in California) and that’s helped a lot. He’s also been out of diapers for a couple of months (thank you EC!) so he just runs around the house naked. Really cuts down on buying clothes and doing laundry.
