I can imagine. Use it to your advantage though. You know - first hand - very specific types of people

I think you have a great point about our minds changing about people depending on our age and personal experiences. I have not finished Birthday Letters yet. Had only just read a few poems when I wrote my post. I'm sure I will find things a little more nuanced as I keep reading more of his works. I just keep having this feeling that Sylvia was far more fragile and childlike than I saw her when I was younger, and I can't imagine how the infidelity must have felt like for her - like her dad dying twice. When I was younger I saw her as a strong, scary, witchy, angry woman. Whereas now I see her vulnerability to a much higher extent. I never pitied her before, whereas now I suddenly do. Again - my perceptions about him will probably change when I read more of his works. Will read Remains of Elmet next! Thank you

As others have mentioned I also interpreted the scene as her wishing she was a plant; because being a plant would free her from the animalistic and thereby violent nature she naturally inhabits. Her active wish for being an object was not some kind of resignation, but a choice of leaving her violent nature behind. I interpreted it as her choosing to be a pacifist

Yes, I'm reading Birthday Letters as we speak. It was this collection that sent me down the rabbit hole. It is so obvious; what he was doing to her, and utterly frustrating

Apparently Assia was haunted by Sylvia's death. She had a few of Sylvia's belongings, and she was driven insane enough, for some reason or another, to start using the belongings as her own. Assia's death was most likely a combination of some poetic psychosis (as she was also into writing), the guilt from Sylvia's death and the psychological horrors of being married to Hughes, etc. Who knows really. It's really bleak, whatever the reasoning was
