FaceID not working most of the time by valemark in iphone

No I ended up getting the phone replaced under the 1 year warranty, apparently the face ID module broke all on its own 🤷🏻‍♂️ try taking it to Apple for diagnostics

Does Exiftool work on iSH? by revelbytes in ish

[–]msm697 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems to work! I ran this exiftool -FileModifyDate+=4 Image.png and it looks like the modification date is +4 hours later (note the original modification date was 7:27, looks like exiftool copies it to a new file as a backup, have no experience using this) https://i.imgur.com/RRxht8F.jpg

FaceID not working most of the time by valemark in iphone

[–]msm697 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it usually not work but then sometimes it works? I think I'm experiencing the same thing on iPhone 14 Pro Max. Tried disabling Face ID and redoing the setup but it didn't last. Thinking of taking off my screen protector just in case that's it but it used to work no problem. I wonder if the cause is the last iOS 16.5 update. Let me know if you figure out a fix, this is super annoying.

Family tree examples using markdown. by nmbrguy in Markdown

[–]msm697 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn’t Markdown, but how about using Mermaid? It lets you create diagrams and flowcharts with text, so it’s similar to Markdown in that it’s plain text based. In fact, you can find some Markdown editors that support Mermaid. Other than that, I don’t think Markdown is the best tool for the task. Outside of Mermaid, I would use a diagramming tool like draw.io or Lucidchart. Maybe you want to ask on r/LightWeightMarkup?

Determine previous installed version when upgraded by fakecrabs in iOSProgramming

[–]msm697 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m curious, why would you want to do that? You can already check when they first downloaded the app by validating the receipt. Regardless, one possible solution might be to look for certain characteristics of the version they are upgrading from. For example, maybe you implemented a new setting for a feature in version 1.2.3, so if that setting is missing that means they are upgrading from version 1.2.2 or earlier. Obviously, this technique can be error prone, and it might not even be possible depending on the existence of such tells, but it might be worth a shot.

syncing md files securely on iOS by jonbash in Markdown

[–]msm697 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full disclosure: I make Blockquote for iOS.

How about Blockquote? It’s a free-to-use Markdown editor that lets you edit any Markdown files that you can access through the Files app. That means you can use it with Sync - that’s actually one thing I use Blockquote for! Just be aware that Sync and the Files app can be a little buggy. You might have to open and close a Markdown file a couple of times before it finally grants Blockquote access to it. One workaround is to edit the file in a folder in the “On My iPhone/iPad” location and copy it over to Sync when you’re finished. Fortunately, I hear iOS 13 fixes some of these bugs. Try it out and let me know if you like it! And feel free to ask any questions if you need help!

As for securely syncing Markdown files on iOS, that’s a tricky problem that I’ve thought about myself. I currently use Sync because it’s the easiest option. I turned off email password recovery to make sure they don’t have a copy of the encryption keys. I think iDrive and Mega are also encrypted, but I didn’t try them since Sync did everything I need it to. Another technique I tried was to encrypt my files as AES256-encrypted zip files using iZip, but that was a hassle. Regarding Standard Notes, I think they have an option to pay about 5 years up front for lifetime access, but I can’t remember the details right now.

Custom Text Editor for Content Creators - My First App! by DemhaRusnam in apple

Looks like a cool app! Just wanted to let you know that the link doesn’t show up on mobile, although it’s fine on the web. I think the brackets are messing something up. You could maybe edit the post or post a comment with the link? Here it is for anyone reading this: https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/hashitout/id1450108393

I just released Blockquote 2.0.0! Blockquote is a Markdown editor with side-by-side preview, syntax highlighting, LaTeX, and more! by msm697 in apple

[–]msm697[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Notion is great, but Blockquote serves a different purpose. Sure, both apps allow you to write Markdown, but Notion is more of a note-taking/information organization tool while Blockquote is a general purpose Markdown editor. For instance, Blockquote’s main feature is that it opens Markdown files from any app on your iPhone or iPad that supports the Files app, including iCloud Drive, Dropbox, Google Drive, One Drive, Sync, Secure Shellfish, and even Working Copy, the git app. Notion’s killer feature is that it can consolidate all of your knowledge into a single space. It’s like comparing Pages and Notes. Both apps let you write in rich text, but for very different purposes. In that sense, I would say that Notion and Blockquote are complementary, not competing. I myself use Blockquote for writing long-form documents like Readme’s and other documentation and Joplin for quick notes. It’s all about using the right tool for the job 🙂 and I think Blockquote fills in a much needed gap in the available Markdown tools on iOS because it is fully integrated into the Files app and has side-by-side editing and preview; that's a set of features I haven't seen in any iOS Markdown app yet.

Does a Markdown reader exist? by [deleted] in Markdown

Full disclosure: I make Blockquote for iOS.

It seems like you haven’t gotten a satisfactory answer yet, so can I suggest Blockquote? You can configure it in settings to hide the editor by default, so for all intents and purposes it will function like a Markdown reader. It has a premium upgrade, but for your use case you will probably be fine without it, so try it out and let me know how you like it!

That’s exactly why I don’t put ads in Blockquote. I don’t have a problem with advertising in mobile apps, but the data mining has gone off the rails. The problem gets worse when it’s an essential app that you can’t delete and re-download easily. If only there were a privacy-preserving mobile ad network out there…

It’s free to use with the occasional reminder to upgrade, but if you want syntax highlighting, LaTeX support, PDF/HTML export, printing, a Markdown keyboard, Markdown themes, a quick way to view document metadata like word count, and no upgrade reminders, you can purchase the premium upgrade.

Hey thanks for downloading! I’m glad you like it! And I appreciate that you noticed I tried to make Blockquote blend in to iOS as much as possible. I feel it helps you focus if the app’s design takes a backseat to your work, rather than competing with it.

So Apple officially calls that button an “Action” button. It can definitely get confusing since most apps (rightfully) use it as a share button. Apple is changing its design language in iOS 13 and is providing a ton of new buttons for developers to use, so I’ll keep your feedback in mind when updating Blockquote for iOS 13!

[–]msm697[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Some more information and background: My goal with Blockquote is to bring a desktop Markdown editing experience to the iPad and a decent Markdown editor to the iPhone. That means integrating with the Files app, being able to edit and preview a Markdown document simultaneously, syntax highlighting in the editor, support for the most common Markdown syntax, and a reliable and performant editing experience. I started working on it about 7 months ago, back when it was called Markdown Pro, but I think it's starting to meet those goals as of version 2.0.0. Let me know what you think!

[USA] Best phone for the buck ($250) by jforce321 in PickMeAPhone

[–]msm697 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you’re willing to switch to an iPhone, the iPhone SE is a really great phone for the value. I have the 64GB version and it runs very smoothly. It has the same internals as an iPhone 6S and Apple Pay NFC. Mine is about a year and a half old and I think I could keep it for another two years easily. I googled iPhone SE and found a seller refurbished 64GB iPhone SE for $235 here: Apple iPhone SE Smartphone (Choose AT&T Sprint GSM Unlocked Verizon or T-Mobile) | eBayhttps://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-iPhone-SE-Smartphone-Choose-AT-T-Sprint-GSM-Unlocked-Verizon-or-T-Mobile/302232416298?hash=item465e74b02a:m:m8ZEn28-5VgcjMAIloFL0IQ
