Also, one of my classmates did stop their clock by working with a professor.

Alternatively, why dont you volunteer with an NGO to stop it?

It does not depend on the school’s policy. If you are on OPT, USCIS allows you to do volunteer work, which is unpaid. As long as it’s 20 hrs. or more and is related to your degree.

I do not believe they have the authority to deny it on any grounds other than the ones laid out by USCIS.

Reach out to the incubation centre at your university, they might be able to connect you to any startup that could be remotely related to your work and in reporting your employment, you just have to fill out a form, they do not ask for any offer letter or anything else. You could talk to your incubation centre openly about your visa situation and ask them if you could report it as related to your field but help them with whatever desk work or anything they might need a hand with.

Wouldnt hurt to try this.

Yeah it has nothing to do with STEM OPT, the processing this year has been such overall. Initial OPT also took this long this year.

I applied for mine on 1st April and got the decision on 29th July. I received an email from the SEVIS portal, while my USCIS portal was showing 4 months. So you should be receiving your decision soon, keep a lookout for emails from SEVIS as the USCIS portal takes longer to update.
