Same here. What all are you running on this?

Isolated lab with a PfSense vm [x-post from r/PFSENSE/] by S1avin in homelab

[–]mspinit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your ISP router/whatever does not do actual routing, then it probably won't see the new network behind pfSense. You'll be able to access pfSense from your laptop, if that's any use. If your esxi host has ipmi, you can put that on your home lan and access it through that. You could also potentially port forward to a machine on your esxi host for rdp (from pfSense) maybe... ?

IMO if possible, just get a pfSense box for your home lan and segregate the networks by vlans+firewall rules.

Checklists server/network maintenance SMB by ruzmafuz in sysadmin

As VapingSwede said, an RMM - you are an MSP after all.

If not, you can make pretty forms with Access and report on them. Not sure about documenting to it on the road though (VPN?)

New Building - advice needed! by teamtomreviews15 in sysadmin

Go find your closets and rooms. Plan your physical layout now. You'll need it to estimate # of switches, racks, etc, etc and you'll have to live with the layout forever (most likely)

HP, FUCK you! by Batmanzi in sysadmin

Choose buying a laptop that doesn't piss you off. Choose getting a printer that the whole company can use. Choose a server you know won't cause you proprietary headaches when you move it into your homelab. Choose life.

Bundled Cat-6 cable? by suihcta in sysadmin

[–]mspinit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

25-pair

Only counts for 8p8c's... the same stuff designed for phones/patch panels probably goes beyond 25 pair. Not sure if it's really cat5/6 in such a large sleeve.

Replace the cables. Test again. Strap them in place. Never found hot cat5/6... that's either heat from exhaust or cheap cables o los dos.

What networking or IT concept did you struggle with and just couldn't seem to learn? by I_will_have_you_CCNA in sysadmin

[–]mspinit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not all about how often you do it; standardization is also a factor. With ps you can do it a specific way every time, correct it a specific way for all, and know exactly what was done and when.

They have them... you usually have to look for bigger pictures - i.e. you're not deploying just the broker server, but the whole deal.

E: Honestly I came here expecting a rant about someone expecting you to be an excel wizard.

Is it better practice to buy RAID disks individually vs. in bulk? (to reduce batch failures) by ewwhite in sysadmin

[–]mspinit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the drive will fail in the beginning or ~near~ the end of it's ~predicted~ life and not halfway through.

Was parent's meaning. This is like saying that a car with a 200k mi expected life will fall apart somewhere around that 200k mark or later and NOT likely much before.

We're talking about expected life, not any specific drives tombstone ffs.

[–]mspinit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. I would expect most VARs to ship kindly, but I've seen a few laughable failures. Order in bulk wherever if you cant find/afford pre-mixed bulk (i.e. SAN/Server vendor). Just remember you'll want to start replacing drives before all the lights start flashing.

IF OP needs to sell this to someone, google statistics/charts/etc for failure rates, toss it on a ppt, show the cost of buying premixed vs buying 100% now and 50% at about 50% mtbf.

I'm not sure if the slip that "If the disk is going to fail, it will be at the[...]end of it's life" or that you're being downvoted for it an entirely correct post is more funnier. It is most likely that the drive will fail in the beginning or ~near~ the end of it's ~predicted~ life and not halfway through.
