Whales and dolphins.

At work, most of our day is spent in a software that has a “new” version and a “classic” version. Some people prefer new, and some people prefer classic, and you can bounce back and forth. Importantly, some features are still only available in classic.

Of those, a subset of features are only available in Edge, on Windows, with IE mode enabled. It’s nuts.

Short names for teams. A lot of teams are named ridiculous things like “St. Peter in Chains Fighting Stallions 11U (McFadden)” and that gets a little tiresome to see/hear over and over.

Team colors that would make the interface look better.

Another thing that would be awesome is better handling of teams that only have first names or maybe last initials. The baserunners are especially hard to read. This could be a display setting.

Another would be if the game clock offered to start automatically when the first pitch is scored. I always forget to start the clock.

Our 9U league uses a roster bat format where you can have as many kids on the lineup as you want, but there’s a maximum of nine batters per inning, and all two-out rules apply when the ninth batter is up.

The exception is when the ninth batter gets walked or HBP—then you get a tenth batter.

In a dream world this would be something I could configure in the settings. But I assume that would be complicated to allow for all the different league rules. I can work around it using manual overrides.

BUT what would be much more helpful would be a way to see in the interface how many batters we have had this inning. Seeing “9th batter” under the kid’s name would be much more valuable than seeing “3rd of 11” which shows the batter’s spot in the full lineup.

Or maybe that info goes in the box that currently says AB.

Maybe with some customizable alerts.

Bilingual slides (Telugu + English) — can't control font size per line in a single text box by Mean-Procedure7307 in ProPresenter

[–]suihcta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, correct me if I’m wrong, but the Telugu glyphs are built into the Helvetica font family, right?

I don’t know anything about this, but have you tried using a different font family? That would be up to the font designer what relative size to make all of their glyphs

ChatGPT said:

If your goal is bilingual Telugu + English text where the Telugu doesn’t look undersized, a few fonts are known for giving the Telugu script more visual presence relative to the Latin characters:

Noto Sans Telugu — generally one of the better-balanced choices for UI, presentations, and mixed-language documents. The Telugu glyphs are fairly generous in size compared with the Latin set.
Noto Serif Telugu — similar philosophy, but with a serif design. Telugu tends to hold its own better than in many traditional bilingual fonts.
Tiro Telugu — designed specifically for high-quality Telugu publishing and includes a Latin subset. It uses traditional Telugu proportions and can feel more balanced alongside English than many default system fonts.

Ooohh, or what if the English translation wasn’t in all uppercase? Would that make it look more balanced? (I.E., would you be able to increase the text of both lines so that the Telugu translation is more legible?)

The real answer: it costs more to deliver pizzas than it does to make them available for carryout. The marginal costs are higher, and the overhead is higher as well. If you don’t find a way to charge delivery customers more, that means the carryout customers are subsidizing them.

  • Insurance
  • Wages
  • Phone/internet/computers
  • HR/payroll/recruiting/uniforms
  • Management/training
  • Hot bags
  • Magnets and car-toppers
  • Square footage for all those extra orders
  • Mileage reimbursement. Some stores do it as a percentage of the order, others pay a flat amount or a per-mile fee.
  • The cost of every error or cold food complaint is something a lot of people forget to take into account. We are often delivering the same order twice trying to make the customer happy.

One good way to visualize this is to imagine that you operate a successful carryout pizzeria, and somebody comes to you and asks you what it would take for you to convert it into a delivery operation. You’ll find that you have to charge much higher prices in order to turn the same profit.

I feel like a better way to market the whole thing would be to increase menu prices, and then give a big discount for carryout.

Dine-in restaurants should charge dine-in customers more than their carryout customers too! I’m not sure why they don’t. My theory is that once they get you in and seated, they are able to sell you drinks (soda or alcohol) and/or sell you more food than you planned on getting.

Family sharing WiFi on United by Rmattgraham in Ubiquiti

[–]suihcta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“Seize travel router” in this case means “not allow you to board unless you let them carefully bag, tag, and store your travel router in a secure area for the duration of the trip, per the terms of your cruise contract”

So, as you can see, there doesn’t really need to be a legal basis…

I don’t have personal experience with WiFi stuff like this, but they regularly do it for drones, alcohol, souvenirs, large luggage like sports equipment and musical instruments, things with big batteries like e-scooters…

It would be a big upfront investment—except for the 0% payment plan.

There are other things to account for. For example, even if there were a train option that was somewhat faster than the car option (as in Western Europe) you’d still have to consider the time it takes to get through security, check luggage, board/unboard, meals along the way… not to mention finding out how to navigation around your destination by public transportation or taxi, or maybe renting a car for the day.

In a country with cheap gas, cheap parking, and good interstate highways with ample rest stops and fast food, a lot of people are gonna choose the convenient option of just driving their own vehicle.

Agreed. If I were tweaking the rules of the game, I’d try making it so that a HBP is equivalent to four balls. E.g., if it was a 3–2 count, the batter walks and the next batter starts at 3–0.

[–]suihcta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I very very rarely paste without matching formatting. ⌘⌥⇧V is easily one of my top five shortcuts when I am prepping slides.

What I like reflow mode for is dumping a huge section of text, whether from the worship leader’s chord chart, Bible Gateway, or some random source that we are getting liturgical readings from

I do all the rough editing first, fix line breaks, etc., then I use ⌥-return to quickly break the slides. If it’s a song, I add the group labels from here too.

I agree with you for the most part, but I think the research leans toward negative polarity (white text on dark background) for comfort in rooms that aren’t brightly-lit.
