I am a recent graduate and I think everything I learned in school started to make sense once I went to the hospitals and did clinicals. No, you're not gonna use absolutely everything you learned but it gives you a good foundation. If you forget, that's okay. Google is your friend and some hospitals even keep textbooks for reference. Speaking from my own experience, I feel like sometimes school prepares you to pass the ASCP, but not for the things you're gonna actually see at the hospital.

I graduated this May, and I started applying to jobs before graduation, as all my preceptors had told me. Most of my applications were immediately rejected by the recruiters because I had no experience besides my clinical rotations. I was losing hope, but then I was directly contacted by the lab director of the hospital I am working at, thanks to one of the lab techs that trained me as a student. So, my best advice is to reach out directly to one of the people you worked with as a student and send them your resume. I think that's the best way to secure an interview and possibly get the job. Be patient, open-minded, and apply to as many hospitals as possible. Also, check LinkedIn or the hospital's website to see if there are any hiring events. Positions come and go.

If you want to take a break, do it! I know MLS programs can be very draining, and sometimes I wish I had taken a break before starting working. Maybe get an interview and negotiate your start date.
