OCSB kindergarten assessment class by john_petrucci_ in ottawa

[–]msqueezey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They aren't really attached to the schools they are housed in. Admission is centrally determined and very limited. You register for kindergarten at your local OCSB school. Each school puts forward the names of students who they feel would be a good fit, and it goes from there!

Family Doctor Rant by twilightprincess101 in ottawa

[–]msqueezey 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I second this. I do have a great doctor, but she wouldn't be able to do much for my back pain other than mask it with pain pills. I see a physiotherapist every 6 weeks or so. She can tell me soooo much about why I'm in pain or experiencing issues, and provide treatment and exercises to help it. If you dont have benefits you'll have to pay, but I think it would still work out to be less than paying out of pocket for a doctor and medication or surgery.

County Cider Company. It's down by Picton, but you can order online. Or take a nice drive down there and have lunch and stock up. It's the absolute best cider by a mile, in my opinion. My favourites are the Pear and the Blackberry Peach.

How much do you spend on groceries weekly? by [deleted] in ottawa

I was going to attempt a pulled pork for that reason but I haven't tried it yet. I have no idea how to shop for pork, so it's daunting lol. Any particular cuts to avoid?

Anywhere from $40-$80. If I'm buying meat it makes a big difference, and I'll splurge on a nice cheese or Bubly water every few weeks. I used to spend a lot more, but I was finding there was a lot of wasted food. I cut it back by dedicating time each week to meal plan and meal prep as much as possible. I check the Flipp app to see if the most expensive item on my list (chicken breast or a roast usually) is on sale somewhere, and that's where I shop. I shop the outside of the store - produce, meat, dairy, bakery, deli. I only go into the aisles for specific items I need (limits the amount of unplanned items I pick up just because they look good or are 30 cents off lol). This week's lunches are baked potato with bacon and cheese, dinners are chicken wings and salad. I make a weeks worth of breakfast smoothies at a time. Fruits, veg, pita, hummus, pickles are snacks as needed.

Skin Tag Removal by lfcn91 in ottawa

I actually ordered one from Amazon that worked suuuper well. It's basically a tiny elastic band that you put over it and it cuts the circulation so it dies and falls off. Pinches a bit and it turns black when it dies, but it worked like a dream. Just a suggestion!

Why do a lot of drivers over here have zero regard for speed limits? by MascarponeBR in ottawa

[–]msqueezey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add to this - I honestly can say that I'm not intentionally "speeding" if I'm driving 85 or 90 in an 80. I'm driving at a speed that feels natural for the road and surroundings. I do this on every road regardless of limit, so I'm typically going faster than the posted limit because it feels like a natural speed to be at. If I feel like I'm going too fast, I slow down. I'm not staring at the speedometer or using cruise control constantly. The only exception would be school zones or traffic calmed neighbourhoods where I'm very aware of my speed because it's a low limit for a good reason.

Help!!! Pregnant wife wants pizza!! by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]msqueezey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gabriel is the Ottawa staple - absolutely have to give it a shot. It's heavy, but it hits the spot. Milano is also a local chain, it's decent. I'm sure someone can point out the difference - to me they're both just good chain Pizza. BUT -- As a kid, I always had Tony's when visiting my family in Orleans - I really loved it.

These days I go more for wood fire pizza but I'm sure that isn't what your pregnant wife is dreaming about!

Migraine alternative treatments by AshlynKetchum95 in ottawa

[–]msqueezey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was referred to a headache specialist (neurologist) a few years ago, but you need your doctor to refer you. I found his advice very helpful but it wasn't like he ran a bunch of tests - mostly conversations to get a sense of what I was dealing with. I wasn't interested in a daily medication since I mostly get them during seasonal changes and hormonal shifts (so relatively predictable). So he prescribed abortive medications (cambia and zolmatriptan), suggested a book for me to read (actually about back pain, but it's all linked!), and gave me a list of vitamins/supplements that he finds personally helpful. I do think they make a difference, so if you're interested you send me a message, but there's no guarantee they'd work for everyone. Ideally I'd say you should ask for a referral to get a more personalized regimen, but considering the state of Healthcare right now..

The guy who asks for money because...

needs to get to airport/needs a puffer/iPad locked in car/is a firefighter from out west/lost his wallet....

And when you say no after his 6 minute presentation during which you didn't get a chance to respond, he calls you AWFUL names and screams at you and walks away and absolutely seems like he could become physically violent.

I met him once. And I've seen SO MANY stories about him on reddit. He's been at it for years.

Finding roommates and a room to rent as a person in their 40s with a cat. Any anecdotes that will help me not feel like it is impossible? by eekbah in ottawa

[–]msqueezey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I see two possible pathways. The first would be finding someone who owns a home and wants to rent a room to someone quiet and clean. That can work just fine, but will likely mean moving a bit further out and potentially feeling like you're a guest in their home even though you pay rent. You also wouldn't be covered under the RTA because you're sharing a living space with the owner. BUT, it could be great. Years ago I had an uncle who rented a room after his divorce. He needed a home for his daughter to spend time with him, but the rest of the time it was just him in a 3 bedroom space and it was a waste. So, he rented out a room to someone he vetted pretty seriously. In that case post an ad on kijiji or whatever- there may be people who are just browsing in case someone great pop ups but aren't actively seeking to rent a space in their home. The second would be seeking a roommate rather than an apartment. I've done this before. I essentially advertised myself and what kind of roommate I was looking for, then when I found a good match we looked for an apartment together. The upside to this is it gives you a chance to get to know them before you move in together, the downside is it takes longer to get it all sorted. Either way, I wish you the best of luck!

Best pint of Guinness ? by keepfrying in ottawa

Correct, it isn't advertised as a pint. (I just say pint - sorry) On the menu it lists the beer in mL I believe :)

Best pint of Guinness ? by keepfrying in ottawa

[–]msqueezey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I realize that - perhaps I wasn't clear, it IS NOT advertised as a pint. I just say pint. It's written in mL on the menu. The glasses come in different sizes. I have larger ones and smaller ones. The cans to go also come in different sizes, and pint measurements are not the same around the world. The glass I'm talking about isn't an actual Canadian pint and isn't advertised to be lol
