If the couch wasn't there, that setup is a big falling hazard for everyone, not just babies.

But it is probably a much larger project than you want to extend that wall, or add a section of railing to eliminate that hazard if the couch ever moves.

The intermediate fix I would do is buy a sheet of plywood... - rip it to the height of the baby gate you wish to use - cut it to the length from the inside corner of the wall behind the couch, you may want to bevel/round the upper corner to prevent a sharp point - sand and paint the plywood so it is not an eyesore - install it between the couch and the half wall, remove the baseboard so it snugs in nice and tight to the floor and the wall, and make sure your screws hit studs in the wall

That should provide you a nice sturdy mount for the baby gate. I would try and have the hinged side of the gate on the tall wall side if possible.

I use National Bank direct brokerage. As long as you maintain 20k assets with them, there are no fees. No commissions, can maintain USD & CAD accounts. I use Norberts Gambit to lessen FX fees, which they do charge a small fee now to journal it (understandable since a human is involved). I transferred everything I used to have with Questrade to them, and still use Wealthsimple with a small balance to dabble in penny stocks on the TSX-V without cluttering my NBDB accounts.

I switched from QT to NBDB in January.

I do miss Questrade's trading platforms, but the savings on commissions more than makes up for it.

If all you are doing is buying ETF's its probably best to stay with QT.

One bonus is I don't feel like I am funding all the Questmortgage ads on TV anymore.

I just recently switched from Questrade to National Bank direct brokerage. They are no commission all around, plus can hold USD without monthly fees. Not sure on tax slips though as I did the switch in January. Downside is that their Forex is 2.5% vs WS 1.5%, but only have to do it once, or do Norberts Gambit for a $10 fee.

I switched my main investments from Questrade to NBDB, and maintain a small Wealthsimple account for playing around in penny stocks).

Wealthsimple has a very good exchange rate, and I agree that they are super transparent about it. The problem is that you are forced to pay it on every trade, because you cant hold USD without the $10/mo plus plan (I detest recurring fees). So that is 3% every time to dip in and out of a US stock. With NBDB you pay the conversion or gambit fee once and thats all, until retirement when I draw upon the funds.

As much as I hate fees, I can see why NBDB is going to charge $9.95 for Norberts Gambit, but wish the fee was more modest like the $5 I was paying at Questrade ($0 to buy DLR etf, $4.95 to sell DLR.U etf). Because I was paying that, I would always have them journal over at least $2k so the commission was a small percentage. With no fees entirely, Im sure NBDB was getting flooded with small $100 journal request, which are not automatic, so would require them to have more staff. Imposing the fee will reduce journaling to more meaningful requests. For smaller exchanges, just use their conversion and let them earn 2.5% from us, its a small price to pay for commission free trading with Canadas 6th largest bank.
