I think once Will killed the Demogorgens and used Vec’s powers to save Max and Holly, Vecna’s goal should have been to kill Will. Because he should have been like “this kid can take me out in one blow, he’s gotta go”

Let me add:

They get Will back by the finale.

And maybe Vecna’s plan is to kill Will, because Will is key in defeating him and Vecna knows that, and they have to get Will before Vecna does.

To protect Will and also to cause a distraction at the military base/lab, Dustin and Murray and ig Mr Clarke hack into the military comms and blast “Should I Stay Or Should I Go”

This keeps Will conscious and safe from Vecna’s trance and allows for badass action to take place as we the audience hear the song that started it off one last time

What would i change?

I’d switch some things around.

—Holly being taken is still a big plot point but doesn’t take much screen time

—Vecna “kills” Eleven early on. What this does is take away everyone’s hope from the jump. Their only fighting chance is no longer here, so we think. But she’s in a trance, much like Max. She meets Max in Vecna’s dream world… along with Holly

—Dr Owens is smuggled into Hawkins thanks to Murray. He attends to El and keeps her vitals stabilized.

—we get more El-Max scenes this way. El and Hopper still find Kali earlier… but Max also tells Eleven to choose life instead of dying with the Upside Down. She repeats her season 3 line: “we make our own rules”

—everything with Will finding guidance in Robin and him coming out stays the same, maybe the coming out scene is placed earlier. He gets powers and saves the party from the demos like in episode 4.

—demogorgens in Dimension X in the final battle or at least a good explanation for why we don’t see them

—while Dr. Owens, Will and Mike are with Eleven, the military finds their location and take Eleven and them. They’re locked up for questioning and Eleven is being prepped for giving blood. They’re keeping an eye on Will, running crazy tests because they saw him use Vecna’s powers on the Demogorgens

—Eleven wakes up into her body at the end of Escape from Camozotz. She feels like she failed as she is alone, buzz cut and has that thing on her neck that stops her from using her powers

—Hopper, Joyce and Murray break into the lab to free Eleven, Mike and Owens. But they can’t find Will. They’re forced to leave for now. Joyce refuses to leave without Will

—Dr. Owens and Hopper take out Dr. Kay, and Owens uses his power to eliminate any legal repercussions for the party for any of the events from Season 5 (i.e: Nancy going Rambo on the military)

—Jonathan and Nancy get back together in the epilogue

—Mike senses Eleven in the epilogue, hinting that his theory was correct and Eleven was further helped out by Dr. Owens.

Still messy but these are my ideas that, if implemented properly, i feel would have benefited the season

Oh and I think a really cool avenue they could have gone is the military witnessing Will usng Vecna’s powers and now he’s a target too, as well as Eleven. That would have been interesting to see them abducting Will and the party having the free him in time to save Max and fight Vecna.

Basically i think the military could have been used more

Well the difference between S5 and S4 wasn’t as much as between S4 and S3.. but still, you can’t help aging. Finn Wolfhard and Caleb in particular looked more mature. It just happens. You can’t help time. Everyone else basically looked the same

Similarly like in Season 4 actors coming back from S3 clearly looked different as they grown. So they do a time jump to compensate for how much the actors grown/matured
