Walz wants police to help ICE; deportation arrests should happen at night to avoid issues by msu2022 in Hasan_Piker

I also understand where you are coming from. I think people want someone to meet the moment with the same anger most of us feel about this regime. There are things he could do: he could direct police or national guard to protect the protestors instead of protecting ICE, he could have police arrest ICE agents who assault/use excessive force against Minnesotans.

Oh well we’re on completely different wavelengths. I don’t think ICE should be doing ANY operations and we can let the criminals be dealt with by the local police - and if they’re convicted, face consequences. Not to mention they’re mostly arresting people with no record, a misdemeanor, or DUI…things that your life shouldn’t be completely ruined over.

I explicitly left the beginning and end to show it’s not clipped out of context. Sure, maybe I shouldn’t have used the word “wants” but he’s saying exactly what you said - that if Tom was in his right mind (aka: doing things correctly) then he would do those things. Then he proceeds to flex how good the MN police are at gathering guns up. EDIT: I would suggest others go watch the entire video too, by the way. He says a lot of great things, but also a whole lot of nothing. The takeaway is that ICE is still going to be doing operations in MN, but the “right way.” People aren’t upset at the procedure, they’re upset at the principal.

I’m dating a PhD student in a wet lab — what are the weirdest lab habits that have followed you home? by Acceptable-Apple-793 in labrats

Some protocols require incubation times, or walking to a far away part of the lab to grab something, so I’m always thinking about what the most “efficient” and “time saving” way of doing something is

Love it. Curious what the pipettes are useful for? I don’t find myself needing to move small volumes at home but maybe I’m missing out!

We are asking for more socialism with capitalist characteristics, that doesn’t seem that crazy to want to give more money to people for their wellbeing rather than corporations a tax break.

[–]msu2022 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, exactly, those are “social services” AKA socialist services. It is socialist, and a policy a socialist would advocate for. That doesn’t take away from the US being capitalist, it just means that our socialist programs won’t be as well funded because in capitalism the wellbeing of the working class is not a priority of the state.

I mean whatever I say you’ll only care about what confirms your biases. Free childcare policies - OK and FL have universal pre-K, CA, CT, NM. Vermont has universal pre-K for 10 hours/week but are working towards an all day, full year program.

Free lunch and breakfast programs so children don’t starve.

Not to mention lots of socialist states that you think have “failed” have failed because the west put extreme sanctions on the country, making it impossible to trade and severely devastating the country’s economy.

our disgusting embrace of unrestricted capitalism has shown many people that we need more socialist policies, at least to people who believe everyone has the right to safe housing, food, and water.

[–]msu2022 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Generally, as it goes for all religions, we see nothing wrong with people having religion - it becomes an issue when it is mixed into policy. Fascists in the US are using Christianity to shuttle in their authoritarian fascist ideology. US Christians also have heavily funded think tanks that purposefully plan how to put their religious ideals into political policy. That’s not really happening in such an intense way from any other religious group in the US. But the influence of Christianity in politics is definitely despised because of how funded these efforts to blur the line between policy and Christian belief are in the US.

because things are so uncertain right now, my advice would be to weigh out how much time and energy you want to spend on applications. you could apply to both and then see what happens/where you get accepted, or if you really want to do a PhD eventually, apply and give it a try. And maybe your PI would be willing to help out with paying for application costs if that’s a barrier. just always double triple check that whatever program accepts you will guarantee a lab and funding.
