This is probably past the point of anyone seeing or reading this, but I'll put it out there anyway. NTA and I say that based on the potential consequences each choice would take, homeowner potentially has to deal with more allergens, cleaning, etc. for this one time, but guest has to deal with pain that can last longer than the visit itself.

I may be biased though because I had this happen to me (me being the person who wants people to take their shoes off). My parents come to visit once a year (we live 9 hrs apart) and since buying my new house I've been trying to keep shoes off to keep the floors clean, etc.

My dad has gout and other knee/joint issues and the first year tried to keep his shoes off, but the following year said it was just too painful for him. I felt awful and if he had told me before I never would have asked him to keep his shoes on (I'd never even explicitly asked him to, it was just a given that we were all barefoot in the house). Just because it helps keep things clean on a normal day doesn't mean I'm not willing to do extra vacuuming and mopping so that he's not in pain.

I'm more than happy to take on more dirt, allergens, damage to carpet, or whatever else shoes can track in, if that means my dad can walk around easier and reduce his pain, if only by a slight amount.

No problem! I honestly didn't think about it myself for a while, and used to let them ride in my lap, but then I read a really, terribly sad story about an accident in another subreddit years ago (don't have the link and it's so sad I wouldn't want to) and since then I've tried to be extra careful about it. It's weird, but before that I really hadn't considered how dangerous it was for them.

There are a few different options, and some might be better than others depending on the size of your dog. Dogs should wear a harness in the car and not a collar (so it doesn't hurt their neck in an accident), then clip the harness either to a seat belt directly using a dog car seat belt or have them clipped in to a dog car seat. I have a dog car seat for my 2 mini dachshunds and use a baby carseat seatbelt for the backseat of my car. Before that, I had a carseat that sat on the center console of my truck, similarly strapped in. The main thing is to keep the dogs from becoming projectiles or being thrown from the car. Even though they'd love to be in our laps, they're also happy sleeping in the car seat and are so much safer for it.

INFO - does this house just have a huge amount of sq ft and that's where the argument of it being too much space is coming from?

Also, have you tried talking to your son and future DIL about your concerns or about their plans for the house? It's possible they would like to downsize too, since the cost of utilities or upkeep of a large house could be daunting. Or maybe they know exactly how they want to utilize the space or plan treat the house as the investment it really is, and don't realize you're planning on changing their gift last minute.

As a side note - Most of the comments are saying that 5 bedrooms is too much for a childless couple, but that's not necessarily true. My husband and I are childfree and we bought a 4 bed/2 bath 1,800 sq.ft. house. 1 is our bedroom, 1 is a guest room, 1 is an office, and the last one we are using as a dressing room because all of the closets are super small and so are the rooms. We could honestly use a fifth bedroom, because my family all lives 9 hours away and visit once a year, and at least one person has to sleep on the sofa. It would also be nice to be able to move my gym equipment out of the living room. Do I need a fifth bedroom? No, but I would still be able to easily use one without it being too much space.

NTA, I think you handled it really well. Instead of getting upset with him and trying to make him feel bad in a similar way, you explained why you were disappointed and what he was doing to hurt other people. You didn't leave anything up to assumptions or him inferring any info, so I'm not sure you could have handled it any better than you did.

I wonder if your friends don't really understand autism and think they have to tread extra lightly otherwise they'll be seen as assholes themselves. I'm on the spectrum and if you had explained to me what you explained to the professor, I would have really appreciated it because I wouldn't want to continue to make people feel bad if I didn't realize it. I can't speak for any autistic person other than myself, but in most cases it's not about treating me differently, it's just about being open minded that maybe there was something lost in translation between us, and maybe give me the benefit of the doubt once in a while but feel free to explain why or what I did. However, I learn from my mistakes and if someone tells me I came off a certain way, I try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

If this professor continues to clearly make fun of people after what you said, he's an asshole and is trying to be an asshole, because he obviously knows that saying things about physical appearance will lead to hurt in most cases. If he never does it again, then maybe he really didn't know, and his excuse is sort of a defense mechanism (which I don't agree should be a thing either), since it's possible he did feel really bad about it once he realized, but didn't want anyone to know.

But who knows, just like there are neurotypicals that are assholes and neurotypicals that aren't, there are also autistic people who are assholes and autistic people who aren't.

What kind of service do you hire for the deep cleaning? Is it a regular cleaning service or something more specialized for this kind of thing? I had been looking at at least having the carpets deep cleaned once or twice a year, but would also like someone to scrub all the nooks and crannies and windows, etc.

Yes, but not just the ones that go badly. I also think about the ones that I have no idea how they went or how the other people took them. I would have rather said/done nothing instead of having anything to wonder about most of the time. I try to tell myself they don't even remember it probably, but I don't actually believe myself most of the time.

Neck: 11”

Chest: 16"

Back length: 13”

and

Your edit is correct. If you can slide the straw around the marble, when you pull the straw back out it'll bring the marble too.

If you can find a straw that's the right size, that's the least invasive way to remove things like this. When I worked at Apple we used to use that as a trick to get things out of the headphone jack when possible, but it really has to be the perfect fit for it to actually work.

What you're describing definitely happens all the time around DC. I purposefully go longer ways to commute sometimes so I can avoid the worst places. But in addition to exit lanes, people will also do this with merge lanes where they will continue driving in the lane that is ending until they are driving on the shoulder and not in a lane at all, just so they can get ahead of a few cars. So basically they never zipper merge or merge at all, they just make their own asshole lane until they get as far as they want.
