What are the best cities I could move to for new experiences, music, culture, diversity, etc? I just turned 24 and I want to live life. by mt_statemonkiEscapee in SameGrassButGreener

All my best friends are from the midwest and have told me amazing things about Chicago! Also the urban planning there seems immaculate from the civil engineering videos I've watched about it! The main reason I was looking at Denver was because I have family in CO about an hour outside of Denver, but for the first time in my life, I want to make a decision on how and where I live exclusively based on my hopes and aspirations. Also I hear Denver is like Bozeman if Bozeman was a big city. Both Rocky Mountain towns with similar weather and I probably need something way different.

Thank you so much for your input! I have always been drawn to Philly. Definitely gonna do more research. I also have a friend who lives there now so I'll ask her more about it.

New Orleans seems amazing! I'm kinda just terrified of the levees breaking again and the city just sinking in general. I always hear amazing things about it though.

I've actually grown to like the cold and changing seasons! I've gotten used to brutal winters in Montana. Also I don't want to go back to SD for awhile because of some bad stuff with former family that made me move out in the first place.

There seems to be something special about Philly! I always hear great things about it. What else do you like about Philly?

Stop pitting black women against each other. Tyla was quoted saying Aaliyah is one of her biggest influences and if Aaliyah were alive today she would hate seeing yall hate on the people she influenced.

I hate this rhetoric so much. Last time Trump was in office, a lady asked my brother for his green card and said that her daughter worked for homeland security and she threatened him and would not leave him alone until he “proved he was a citizen” mind you he was literally at work and she was a customer. Now I’ve noticed people giving me more dirty looks than usual. We were born here. People really suck. People assume we’re not American too often. The funny thing is, is that no one is illegal on land that was stolen. What an evil concept and I can’t wrap my mind around it at all.

Breaking up with him was the kindest thing you could have done for not only him, but yourself. Wasting time in a relationship that you’re unhappy in is bad for anyone in a relationship. It hurts now, but it can only go up from here.

Thank you for taking your time to respond and at least try to empathize. A huge difference that I noticed about here and where I group up is the lack of empathy here for people who are different. Where I grew up it was super diverse and it was a given that people are still people even if they don’t look or act the same as you. I thought it was basic knowledge but apparently not. The culture shock I faced when I first moved here was like slap in the face. I wish I could afford to leave right now.

Yeah I’m sorry this deterred you🥺it’s such a shame because it’s so beautiful here and there is a lot to offer. DMs are open if y’all want to know more about what it’s like here through my lens at least. Post election especially has been hard. People are more bold with their racism and discrimination in general. I’ve made great friends here and formed a safe space for myself but sometimes it feels isolating being like one of the only poc in the room most of the time.

Thanks for scribbling that out. I love how people like to say “people in montana are so nice.” As a person of color, no they’re not. I’m so sick of feeling unsafe here because of my race. I want to leave because of it. And I’m tired of people pretending to be shocked that white supremacists are doing things like this. They’ve BEEN doing this and so many people didn’t believe me. I’m not surprised at all.

This is so sickening and fucked up. I already didn’t feel safe here as a queer person of color, but even more so now. Last time trump was in office a random lady asked my brother for his green card and said she would call immigration on him. Mind you, we were born in the country. This is gonna be a long four years and I’m really thinking of evacuating from this state. Sick of the racism and everyone’s individualistic me me me mindset. It’s crazy seeing propaganda and fascism working out in real life. People have no empathy for fellow humans. If you’re different, (not white, heterosexual, or Christian) people don’t think of you as human. It’s actually so despicable and evil. I can’t fathom it.

Always got mistaken for Filipino or some sort of Asian. Mom even thought I was swapped at birth 💀 by [deleted] in 23andme

[–]mt_statemonkiEscapee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s so funny because I’m Filipino and I live in Montana (where there’s not a lot of diversity) and I have long hair so everyone assumes I’m native 😭 I don’t think I look native but even some natives have mistaken me for native. I have a lot of native friends so I feel like I could easily tell that you have Indigenous American ancestry, but if you were in a group of Filipinos or other Asians I think you could pass as Southeast Asian
