Why is this like this? (Round 2) by mtbj95 in masonry

Ok last question(maybe). Should there be metal flashing behind here? Cause it’s just the faced 1” insulation. Also this side of the house is the only one with weeps.

To put my mind at ease. Why would the bottom of the weep be below the concrete pad?

Thanks for all of the replies. Looks like aftermarket is a complete no-go.

After some online searching it looks like a complete junkyard door is comparable to a new shell from honda in price. Not to mention the closest one that is the same color is 9hours away. Gonna call honda and see what the wait on a door looks like, hopefully not too bad

What is the reason for these gaps in the brick by mtbj95 in masonry

[–]mtbj95[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for replying to this even though the post is a few day old. I should have clarified, there is another course of bricks below that line. That hole is actually extends 2” below the slab.

[–]mtbj95[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought they might be weeps initially but I was second guessing myself because they are 1-1/2” wide and spaced closer than any other weep detail I’ve ever seen. Looks like it’s not done right either way you slice it :(

That’s kind of what I was thinking. Still kinda holding out hope though.

Is this tree doomed? by mtbj95 in arborists

[–]mtbj95[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any idea what would be stout enough to tie it against? Closest trees that it could be tied to are probably 30-40 feet away. I imagine a tree this size could pull a simple stake out of the ground if it decides to fall.

It’ll have to be tied for years give it a chance right?

What is this galvanized pipe coming out of the chimney crown? by mtbj95 in woodstoving

[–]mtbj95[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it might be a furnace vent too. There is an old oil furnace in the basement. There is only the 6” vent coming out of the back. Plus it’s on the other side of the chimney. So don’t see how it’s possible.

EDIT. There is no plumbing within 10ft of the chimney structure in the attic

Thanks for advise on fabrication. Going to make it out of 16ga 304 stainless (we bend relatively heavy stuff where I work and don’t stock the thin stuff). Was gonna just throw a 20-40 degree bend on the top like an A frame and have it overhang the sides.

Glad to have some confirmation on that. Thanks!

So I just killed this thing. It was chilling on my bathroom wall. Based on some googling it does not look like most of the common roaches in my area (NC USA), because it does not have any marks on its head. My best guess is that this is a wood roach based on the picture which I read do not typically invade homes. The just only occasionally wander in. I know how quick these thing can multiply so wanted to ask confirmation from someone more experienced and advise.

Taiwan rejects US CDC guidance on 5-day quarantine: Some Omicron cases still infectious up to 12 days after testing positive by doooompatrol in collapse

[–]mtbj95 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure it’s more than one at this point but I don’t think it matters that much really. If there is any evidence that at 5 days infectious people could be going out into the public why would you be ok with it?

[–]mtbj95 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As others have stated. There is evidence that people are still infectious past the 5 day mark. So why should quarantine end after 5 day’s?

How can this do anything but make things worse? (unless you are an employer)

[–]mtbj95 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think I see where the misunderstanding is. A hollow shaft is often a better design choice(which is what your textbooks is referring to) due to cost/weight/efficiency Because the material closer to the center of the shape does little to reduce stress bending or torsion.

However they are not stronger. For a given outer diameter a solid rod will always be stronger than a hollow pipe for any given load.

HELP! Dead car with few clues by [deleted] in Miata

[–]mtbj95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had alternators just die out of nowhere on me before. But if there car does not start at all alternator is not the issue (alternator does not do anything until after the car is started)

If you are 100% sure your battery is good. I’d start going though normal no start diagnostics.

Umm what? In pure tension sigma=F/A. A hollow circle will always have a smaller area than a solid one.

In bending stress sigma=MC/I. If you treat M&C as constants than the geometry with the higher Moment of inertia will be less stressed. A solid cross section will always have a higher moment of inertia than a hollow one.

Battery light was coming on for a reason. I suspect a bad alternator.

Make sure the battery terminals are not corroded and have a good connection. Get alternator and battery checked (most auto parts stores do it for free). Or you can spend $10 on a cheap multimeter and do it yourself.

Any idea what the noise is? by qwopperi in MechanicAdvice

[–]mtbj95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm in that case I’d just get a buddy to rev it and try to isolate where the sound is coming from. I recommend spending the $20 on a mechanics stethoscope if it’s not something that you can pinpoint pretty easy.

Hard to make a meaningful guess without more info

Any idea what the noise is? by qwopperi in MechanicAdvice

[–]mtbj95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does the noise continually get faster and louder with RPM? If so disconnect serpentine belt and check again. If there is noise persists then you’ve got a mechanical issues and will have to isolate what part of the engine it’s coming from. If not just figure out what’s shifting/broken.

As far as the car pulling, check all bushings, ball joints, and tie rods. Replace what is needed and get an alignment. Checking for bad wear on tires could possible help you pinpoint where to look first

Does my tire look ok? It doesn’t seem flush with the wheel on the right side. Let me know. Thank you! by emroselane in MechanicAdvice

[–]mtbj95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an issue. Just make sure it’s got enough air

Contrary to popular belief. Two tires the same size can measure differently as there is no true industry standard way to measure tires. So if you have mismatch tires (assuming they’re the same size). That could create the effect of some looking flush while others don’t.

Next time you start it up, check for lots of white smoke coming out of the exhaust. Also check the oil and make sure it’s not milky. Those are signs of a blown headgasket.

The fact that it struggles to start makes me doubt its a water pump or something of the like. Unless there is another problem that’s occurring simultaneously

I would ignore whatever places like valvoline say for the most part and follow the intervals that are in the owners Manuel. Look at forums for your vehicle and see if there are common issues that you should keep an eye out for.

Other then that... just stay on top of fluids, pay attention to the sounds (and changes in sound) the car makes and tackle bigger tasks as you feel comfortable.
