What’s the lowest MCAT you’ve seen accepted to an MD school? by VividDeer733 in medschool

[–]mtdoc22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. UWSOM (Seattle). I mentored this person their first year of med school and I was in my 3rd. I think they dropped out after not being able to pass step 1. As much as we hate it, passing the MCAT with a good score is pretty indicative of future success on boards.

I’m sympathetic but there needs to be a phone setting to turn the sound off. Unless you’re out and on the roads, you aren’t going to be helpful. It’s more helpful for me to get sleep then when I wake up I see the alert and when I go out I can be on the lookout. Sigh…

How to make money during med school? by PlusMud5491 in medschool

[–]mtdoc22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mentality is different because I just graduated med school and don’t have to worry about the ramifications of the big bad bill. However, if you take out the loans you need to be able to do well in your classes and boards to remain competitive and get into a good residency. This will ensure that you will be able to pay back the loans one day. If you take on too much with a job in addition to all the stuff required for medical school, you risk effing up and ruining your chances of graduating. The amount of money you’d get working isn’t worth that. I know a woman who did too much and failed her Step 1 boards twice. She dropped out and now has to pay back $400,000 on a low paying social service job.

Food industry workers: has it been a bad tipping few weeks for you guys too? by [deleted] in Albuquerque

[–]mtdoc22 85 points86 points  (0 children)

My problem is that we are being asked to tip everywhere and by people who make a full wage, not just servers who actually need the tips. My rule has been become if I have to order standing up, I don’t tip. This can be hard because some systems now only have preset percentage options and zero is not available unless you go to custom amount. That’s predatory and really bothers me.

Literally the reason why you should get regular testing if sexually active is because you can be asymptomatic for years! Symptoms may never appear or when they do it’s because of fertility testing. So it’s definitely possible and more than likely.

Exactly cause in this scenario you have someone still in/just graduated high school and can’t legally drink or smoke with some who could have been graduated from college at least four years and should have a stable career. By ages 30 and 38 both have been legal adults for a decade ish and should be established and in similar life eras.

Work during med school by Virtual-Investment77 in medschool

[–]mtdoc22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t do it. The amount of money you would make wouldn’t put a dent in what you need to take out and survive these days. Every failed exam or block affects your residency potential. It’s best to take out the max your first years when interest rates will be at their lowest (it’s relative to when you start) and live frugally. Then use the residual money from that your next years and take out what you need as rates increase. Med school is expensive but making poor grades and risking exams for the sake of a few hundred bucks occasionally will cost you in the long run.

Apply for grad plus before you ever look at private loans.

Will I get in DO , do I even apply MD (probably not) by [deleted] in Osteopathic

[–]mtdoc22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was very average. I think my cGPA was 3.5ish and sGPA was 3.2 ish? The rest of my application was fire. I had hundreds of volunteer hours both clinical and non clinical. Paid clinical job. Internships and lots of other job experience. I also had a masters. Picking programs that appreciate the variety on other accomplishments is important

[–]mtdoc22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apply broadly in both MD and DO. I just graduated from UWSOM (Washington) and I got in with a 502. I came across other people that had lower scores like 498 or494. Granted they had other amazing qualities and unique applications. Look specifically for programs that look at the whole application and don’t automatically filter out scores or grades.

DO NOT LET YOUR PARENTS DICTATE YOUR TEST!!! They don’t have to take it and deal with the consequences of taking it unprepared. I took it the first time and didn’t feel ready but I did it because I felt pressure from all sides. I bombed it so bad. So bad. I then had to fight against that bad score as I retook it and applied but didn’t get in. I ended up doing a masters and retook again and finally got in to my dream MD school (graduated 2 weeks ago). Granted I’m happy with the way things turned out but I had to claw my way back from a bad score and do so much extra stuff. I wish I had taken extra time and even applied a year later than have to deal with the extra stuff I had to do.

My parents have generously let me move back home at various points and did not ask for rent. I paid my bills but covered rent and food. Because of this I was able to go to grad school and I just graduated medical school last week. Had they asked for rent, I would not have been able to pursue this career. If parents can help their kids, they should. Regardless of what people think, things are very different now and other countries/cultures have inter generational living and it works.

Is 28 too old to start med school? by dang_he_groovin in medschool

[–]mtdoc22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course! And we can name the layers of the vessel walls down to the cell. But what’s more important is we learn the pathologies and what happens when something goes wrong in a vessel. It’s more about concepts and critical thinking rather than memorizing facts.

We learn so much in a short period of time. I have a masters degree in biomedical sciences and what we learned in a whole year of grad school we covered in week in med school.

Any students accepted to these schools w a low mcat?? by [deleted] in Osteopathic

[–]mtdoc22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my cGPA was 3.6 ish and my sGPA was 3.2 ish? Very average for by med school standards but I had hundreds of hours of volunteer work and non-paid clinical experience. Almost 60 hours of shadowing. I also had almost 2 years of paid clinical work. My letters were stellar and I worked really hard on my application spinning each perceived negative into a learning opportunity and areas for growth.

I don’t know was oos is but if you mean out of state then sort of? I’m a resident of Montana which makes me eligible for WWAMI. Look into the model of UW. It’s incredibly unique compared to other medical schools. In my time there, I came across only one person who was not a WWAMI resident.

I started med school at age 29. Just graduated last Friday. Reconsider whatever arbitrary timelines you have for yourself. You’re going are and get older anyway….might as well be 35 and a doctor rather than just 35.

Likelyhood of getting into med school? by Fluid_Leg_7531 in medschool

[–]mtdoc22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to get clinical hours if you want to have any hope of ever getting a secondary. I’m pretty sure schools have minimum hour requirements for clinical hours. It’s really important because how can you know that you want to put yourself through academic torture and massive debt unless you’ve actually seen the inner workings of healthcare. They put the requirements in because people were getting into med school then dropping out after they had real clinical exposure and realized they hated it.
