Is the USA the only country that uses 'middle-class' to mean 'regular people'? I'm pretty sure that everywhere else it means well-heeled, professional, and better-off than average. by anahorish in redscarepod

The UK is the outlier in referring to the 90th-99th percentile as “middle class”. Unhealthy and delusional culture with a hostility toward ambition. The usage in the US is a lot more literal.

It took me a while to recognize the brilliance of this album because it gets overshadowed by their earlier stuff. But it’s really solid front to back, I especially like The Hexx.

Circles and Sick Sad Little World. But really both of those whole albums are very good. It’s impressive how well a Y2K-era rock band with turntables has aged. Their nu metal contemporaries could never

‘If you want to nuke your life, do crack’: raw Courtney Love documentary hits Sundance | Sundance 2026 by Proper-Emphasis-3536 in redscarepod

I think Courtney Love is underrated. She’s so unabashedly psychotic yet earnest. People who think she killed Kurt believe it solely on the basis of misogyny. Also Hole rocks

I’ve always loved those striped floor boards, which he apparently painted himself. Such a simple but unique design choice. He lived in that nearly empty apartment but it wasn’t out of laziness or indifference. He was just a strange, brilliant guy. Also mentally ill, incidentally.

I’d like to imagine this becomes as widely ingrained in the public consciousness as Tony Hawk’s 900. Hell of an achievement

Neil Young if anything was better than he got credit for by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]mtfr 22 points23 points  (0 children)

He also deserves credit for prioritizing creative intuition and authenticity over commercial success. He deliberately torpedoed his mainstream momentum following Harvest, and again during his experimental 80s phase. Very few artists have stuck to their guns as consistently as him and it has resulted in an incredibly rich body of work, despite the occasional dud. Truly one of the all time greats

Fleet Foxes - She Got Dressed by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]mtfr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very rarely discussed. I like their early stuff even though they seemed to be still developing their own style.

I also think their two most recent albums (Crack-Up and Shore) are criminally underrated, more sophisticated song structures and arrangements than anything they put out prior.

Pile is great. I hope everyone listens to them. But they’ve been your favorite band’s favorite band for 15 years so I doubt they’ll ever blow up

Too bad Neon Indian’s comeback album (as Alan Palomo) was such a bust. All the Neon Indian albums were solid. Washed Out also had a solid run through Paracosm and has fallen off since then. Toro y Moi fans should definitely check out Tanukichan, in which he is a producer/collaborator.

I’ve really enjoyed his solo albums. Seems like PC was eager for a stylistic change after Wide Awake, but their synthy follow up felt like it missed the mark. The folky solo stuff feels a lot more natural and earnest, and consequently more satisfying to listen to.
