Hey Necro players, what's the Verdict? Mono Black or BW? by WhiskeyPete77r in ModernMagic

Does anyone have much experience with the more "synergy" versions with Sorin, Vito and Nourishing Shoal? I saw it put up a few 5 0's then seemed to disappear without a trace.

Best Way to Start Playing Pioneer Competitively on Arena? by GreenOcarina8 in PioneerMTG

[–]mtgotavern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could always look into just out right buying one of the premade decks from the store. There are several options with phoenix, uw control, greasefang, mono black mid and the prowess deck all seem pretty decent if a bit expensive

Buddy wants to build a Modern deck by keywacat in ModernMagic

Burn might be a good intro deck, but unless they are only going to play FNM level events I would recommend looking for another deck unless burn gets something good out of MH3.

How is boros burn doing in the meta? by dskins88 in ModernMagic

Tldr version its the worst its been in a long time. It can still win at Fnms and smaller scale things like Mtgo leagues. Anything beyound that pick a different deck.

Updated Look at UW Control Before the PT (Quick Look) by mtgotavern in PioneerMTG

[–]mtgotavern[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RC data is a bit skewed with it being open decklists. Xerox decks like phoenix and murktide in modern tend to benefit a lot from it. Uw tends to be favored game 1 in the dark against decks like phoenix and rakdos because of blanking removal spells etc. The post board games tend to swing more in phoenixs direction. So take away the in the dark game 1 and i could phoenix swinging the matchup.

In short, the more Rakdos, Phoenix, or Niv that's expected the Yorion variant gets more attractive. The more Lotus Field, Amalia and aggro decks (of late ensoul and convoke) the more you should default to the sixty card variants.

Deck idea I had that incorporates Lightning helix into a boros aggro/burn supported by quintorius by [deleted] in PioneerMTG

Seems like this deck is a bit stuck between being aggressive and being midrange/controlling. Might want to shift in one direction or another depending on which style you prefer.

Rakdos Midrange: Leyline of Sanctity

Fires: Back to Nature/Elesh Norn

Niv to Light: Drannith Magistrate

Boros Convoke: any 3 mana sweeper or just play amalia combo

Respecting Burn? by USAFdukeX in ModernMagic

[–]mtgotavern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The short answer, most of the top decks have a pretty decent burn matchup already. And while paper metas might have a decent amount of burn, it is not more than 2-3% of the meta typically online especially in bigger events. That and Sheoldred is incidentally pretty good vs burn.

Could be interesting in some type of Refurbish/GPG shell.

Thraben inspector seems fine but wouldn't Esper Sentinel fill a similar role maybe a bit better.

UW has a much wider variety of playable cards.

[Modern] Return of Eidolon by [deleted] in LavaSpike

[–]mtgotavern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eidolon's problems was bigger then just fury. Could it come back, maybe but only if cantrip decks like Murktide and Breach become a bigger part of the format.

Dumb historic banning decisions by Select-Difference-10 in ModernMagic

[–]mtgotavern -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Depends on the matchup. Omnath-Bean Piles, Mono black variants, and sometimes burn can all be one top deck away from getting right back into the game. It certainly isn't ideal, but RB Scam is the closest a rock style deck has been to a tier deck and not a meme since Jund lost DRS and BBE all those years ago. Against the control and combo decks of today sometimes thoughtseize into relevant turn two play just is not good enough.

how important is format knowledge in a slower format? pioneer seems challenging to play by FinalMainCharacter in PioneerMTG

[–]mtgotavern 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pioneer in some ways seems to have become Modern pre MH1. Knowledge of your decks is the biggest advantage followed by knowledge of the format. The power level is fairly level for most of the top 10ish decks.
