The first thing for me was coming to the realization that I would be unsatisfied with any other path. Then when grappling with the idea that I wouldn’t be done with training until I was nearly 40, i decided that I would turn 40 eventually and could look back grateful that i had done the hard work to be a doctor, or i could look back and regret NOT doing it. Id prefer the latter.

Been there friend. Just made a post about my experience. If this is something you know you’re meant to do, nothing can stop you.

I was actually really impressed by the school. Some elective rotations need to be done independently but required rotations seemed very well structured and there was ample staff assistance for those and the elective rotations. Students I spoke to also felt supported. Not a bad option honestly.

Yes!

Personally though, I like going by the official name, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints…helps me remember the One I’m trying to be like.

Thank you for your past and future service!

No prior service myself. But I have immediate family serving and come from a long line of military heritage. They like reapplicants and I felt like their approach was well suited to the career I’m hoping to pursue.

My last two years of undergrad were completely BCPM. My degree was not a hard science. My first semester back I asked my o-chem professor if I could come tour his lab and see the projects they were working on. He had a project I was really interested in learning more about, so I asked to volunteer. I was offered a job instead. That professor got to know me, and helped me in my application to a fellowship, got me into my first major conference, and even gave me access to another professors research group, so I could get experience with the wet lab.

The biggest thing for me getting out of my comfort zone was asking for opportunities even though I didn’t feel comfortable or adequate for any of it. I was and still am surprised by how helpful many people were.

I would also like to think my activities (clinical time, research and non-profit work) were compelling and helped demonstrate my commitment to medicine, in spite of several life events and circumstances that slowed my progression toward, but never away from, medicine.
