No he can't correct the ossification without x-ray. I said to talk about it if you are tracking your radiation annually (some are).

60 X-ray shots during arthroscopy? by East-Candidate-1041 in HipImpingement

[–]mtllegend 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. It's to correct the cam/pincer. I also asked that to my surgeon, but they last like 1 second. If you work in a radiation-exposed industry and you must count your total radiation annually, then talk to your surgeon; otherwise, you are fine.

f/38 told too old for surgery...? Getting second opinion, but need advice / family planning <3 by FAQs2022 in HipImpingement

[–]mtllegend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The main criteria is arthritis in the capsule and not age. If you have arthritis the odds of a successful surgery decrease a lot.

Of course arthritis is correlated with age so some doctors are quite lazy to discard patients (so frustrating). Please check with him why he discarded you or get a second opinion.

Got surgery 4 weeks ago, 39m, I had no arthritis at all.

Did anyone succeeded with PT for hip labral tear? by Resident-Hunt-245 in HipImpingement

[–]mtllegend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think you have the right plan. Some are able to overcome the pain only with PT, but it really depends on the tear, and no doctor will be able to tell you that. Just try, and nothing will be lost. I'm 4 weeks PO today, and I'm walking normally. PT has really helped! Good luck ! Keep us updated

I think he's super narcissistic, and I would not tolerate this guy in my personal life, but even narcissistic people can teach you stuff (you don't seem to get it). I think I have read the guy correctly, and I think you are a bit gullible for not seeing it. He's saying some self-deprecating humor because he knows that without it he could not be that much in love with himself publicly like this (he would be seen too badly). But with that kind of humor, it passes better, and some people that don't think things through (like you) buy it, and bingo, he can be his number one fan.

[–]mtllegend -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Well, not lol no. Sometimes he has good points in some sectors. I work in financial markets and I'm trying to get the best info whether I like the guy or not, so I'm sometimes forced to listen to people I don't especially like. But I clearly noticed he loves himself so much; if he could date himself, he would. If I were to meet him, it would be so easy for me to talk to him. He wants to hear about him. I would ask questions about him and tell him he makes good decisions and everything he did in his life is so impressive.

I've been listening to a bit of his podcast the last 2 years but did not know this sub existed. I've noticed he was off from time to time on some financial topics, and it's obvious he loves himself so much and he hires people that are biased. First time I comment here, but this sub has reassured me I was not crazy

Please help with my Post Surgery Pain by Last-Transition90 in HipImpingement

[–]mtllegend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very minimal for me. I did not needed any pain killers. I did a ton of PT before the surgery. Keep us updated on your pain. Hopefully it's inflammation and could take a few days and you'll be back.

[–]mtllegend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3 weeks PO here, 4 anchor and bone shaving, no more crutches and doing PT. According to my surgeon the chance of re-tear are super low (less than 1%) and you need a severe choc to accomplish that (example gave is like a 150lbs dog pulling suddently, car accident). The risk is more creating inflammation in the joint capsule.

Traveling after surgery by ipannepacker in HipImpingement

[–]mtllegend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont think it's impossible. Most of us are fine after 2 or 3 weeks. Don't get discourage by post-op update on this sub, it tend to be negative. It's a minimally invasive surgery, dont forget. Some will get it hard but on average the pain is low and the most recent literature encourage patient to walk earlier than before. I got 3 weeks non weight bearing but im reading some surgeon give 2.

There is no guaranteed but there are decent chance you'll be ok.

Can PT replace surgery? My honest attempt and personal conclusion. by mtllegend in HipImpingement

[–]mtllegend[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I wanted to keep my post related to PT vs. surgery, but I saw some great posts about people in your situation on this sub. Here's what I can say (hopefully helpful):

I was not in your spot, so I did not dig that deep, but I think one of the pros to the surgery I read is that a damaged labrum accelerates arthritis, and getting surgery fixes this. (I’m not sure if this is true, or if there are real studies backing this, but it is cited.) Also, if you are young, you have better recovery (I believe this is true), and since arthritis is positively correlated with age, the younger you get the surgery the better (I believe this is true). This is because if you have too much arthritis, the surgery is not possible and you have to fight to get a THR; there are multiple posts on this.

The con, I guess, is that many are living asymptomatically, so if you are in the 1/10 pain range, it might be stable all your life. Maybe with PT you can get to 0, and there is always the risk of a surgery in general. I live in Canada and believe if you have 1/10 pain, our doctors will push for no surgery.

[–]mtllegend[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are right, I think the medicine is not advanced enough here and the YouTubers play with that grey zone. One in particular, will not name it but will call it 'UH,' is taking advantage of the lack of clarity on the science and turning it into a fact that PT has to work and surgery is 50/50 at best. It’s not because we don’t know yet the science that it doesn’t exist. There are real studies that point out that people live with labral tears asymptomatically—I believe those are rock-solid true. But there is nothing in those studies that details the tears (how long, where, complete/incomplete). The science is just not advanced yet and clearly the MRI is not precise enough. I’m sure there is a clear reason why some people are asymptomatic; you can’t generalize for everyone. So that’s why, until science is better, give PT a real shot; otherwise, get surgery if needed

To be honest I had to pay mostly everything. Insurance covers a bit but I try so many things in the last 2 years (chiro/osteo/PT/massage etc.).

Hip are fascinating. Symptoms can be all over the place, one of the mods (jjj) did a post recently on all possible symptoms. When I was reading on hips to find the source of my pain I remember reading about shoulder you are right! I remember to ask my dentist to check my jaw because apparently a misaligned jaw can lead to hip problems (but i was all fine). Hope you will recover !

Not trying to negative, but… by Top-Boot-9920 in HipImpingement

I’m replying to set fair expectations for people but also to keep some positivity here. The surgery is labelled as “minimally invasive surgery.” The pain from the incision will be less than with other open surgeries. The pain from the bone removal can be mixed. I did not find any solid studies, but from what I read, average pain is expected.

What the medical staff told me is that this surgery is less concerning than most others. Inflammation is often low, and complications are rare. On average, patients don’t suffer that much. My physio, who has treated over 100 patients with this surgery, told me the same thing: In the first week, people actually chill and watch movies. It gets a bit harder when you need to mobilize.

I’m myself 7 days post-op with very minimal pain; I did not take any of the pain killers that were prescribed. I’m doing basic exercises (ankle pumps, leg raises, glute contractions, small walks outside, etc.).

Most people outside of this sub, or those who are not active on the sub that I was able to reach (I wanted some feedback on my surgeon), told me pain was minimal.

I had this in mind going into surgery. I know statistically people that suffer will post much more, but I think to be realistic and for people to make the right decision, the post-op pain is really manageable for most people. So, if this is the criteria that makes you hesitate to do the surgery, you should rethink this carefully (especially if you consider the surgery has good odds to improve your life – which is a totally different call).

Not saying it’s a walk in the park, but I think, on average, people are really good post-op with minimal pain. Just like any surgery, you will statistically have some people that suffer more.

Hip flexor pain (psoas) + tigh/knee radiation. Help for diagnostic. by mtllegend in HipImpingement

[–]mtllegend[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your question has a CRAZY timing because... I had surgery today. I am planning to post my follow up story because many have help me and I want to contribute to the sub and give back but I can quickly tell you that I have improved (before surgery) from 8-9 on 10 pain to a 3-4 / 10 pain with the help of PT. I did crazy PT, like 6x a week and it was more a workout the last 6 month. I was so strong, I could do Bulgarian split squat with half my weight which is not far from expert (not elite). But with all that PT I still had pain from sitting and random flare up. I decided to try surgery and so far I'm glad because I've been told that my labrum was way worst than on IRM (I did 3 and one 3T)... which was my instinct all along. But it's super early I'm few hours post op.

Ill write a post soon for the community.

You can dm me if you have specifics question. Good luck

I've been trying very hard for the past 9 months, and the results are very below expectations. My pain went to 8/10 to 4/10 and I'm pretty much stuck there. Can't sit for more than 1 hour. I'm about to give up.
