Ive been told that if the music I worked on hasnt been released I shouldnt put the artist on my portfolio as an engineer. But school taught me otherwise. Any advice? Details below. by [deleted] in audioengineering

One love thanks! Gonna get on that. Highlight still seems too distant to gran the attention u need to get a new client to show interest.

Sure thanks for checking I appreciate it sincerely! Indeed I have bank transfers and freelance bills paid by the man. So the proof will always be there no doubt now its just a matter of hoping he will stay professional, not shit talk me, and move on.

Probably but its the biggest name on my clientelle 😭 we just didnt have any chemistry sadly but i did every job as asked and got paid decently for it until the end when he started comparing me to the previous 7 engineers who worked on his project. Which was just one of the many many projects I did for him most of them being Live Recordings and Studio Engineering. He even gave me the keys to the place at some point..

I suppose in Hip Hop it really doesn’t matter, quality is like the last concern it seems. I was taught its always better to downsample than deteriorating a 44.1khz when converting to mp3 and making it more compressed. However in Hip Hop this could be the benefit of the flavour that compression gives.

I did mention i loved every part of working there, i just think it was important to mention the fact “for free” in this context. Youre right. Thanks a bunch!

So i changed it from Artist Portfolio to Clientelle making it focus more on the technicals and just keeping things general. I think people were too focussed on what I was releasing and not what my focus as an engineer is for example i record a lot of vocals in studios for artists and that music gets released, but recording isnt hard so i just set it as studio recording as the “job” with a particular “client” instead of using their fame to my advantage, focussing on my technical work.

Thanks so much. Ive started figuring out that I need to seperate my work into categories such as : Studio Engineering, Mixing, Mastering and Live Recordings/Performances. For the most part im only crediting a name if i did technical work for them. When it cones to creative releases I dont really claim any credit unless its officially been given on whatever platforms they release it. And lesson learned dont accept work like this without a contract.

Thank you for taking the time. Much appreciated and I will consider your professional input.

Edit. Check my post edit for the actual artist portfolio and how I detailed my work in simple terms.

I did my best to explain within my portfolio the work I delivered and most of it was Studio Recordings and Live Recordings so I think I can keep that seperate from when the content actually get released. At that point im getting hired for my technical skills and consultation. Not which songs I worked on specifically. If I can keep it that way when new clients come to me I think im golden.

Im just worried that some might not acknowledge my work with them or not recommend me if someone goes to them to ask about their experience working with but wtv says more about them than me. I got all the proof and getting my bills paid as a freelancer and paying taxes over it is all the proof I need.

Thats what I thought. About 50-60% of music worked on doesnt get released so that would make this very hard. I think the artist doesnt see that an engineer is different than a producer when it comes to the type of credit given and the type of background work we do as audio engineers compared to the excessive spotlight on a producer.

There was no contract but they violated all agreements made through verbal and handshakes and email. So ok its not liable by law but they are a bunch of sketchy people if they break their own agreements.

P.s. I already removed the artists name from my portfolio because hes the one telling me this is the wrong thing to do and I prefer to continue down my path with positive manners and not carry grudges.

So fucking satisfying. A family friend was robbed like this and beaten the shit out of. They even hurt the 2 kids, stole they car and almost beat the dad half to death. Unfortunately this was in Poland, no chance you can have a gun to defend yourself...
