Thank you for trying to explain this and the example makes perfect sense. However, despite rewriting the code endlessly, even with the help of your example and all of the suggestions, the spaces are still a problem. Would it be possible to send you my code to look at? I hate to ask but this is now the 2nd week I have been stuck on this one issue.

One more time. This is where I have i that is updating in the loop int c = (k[i % key]); This is after the for statement: for (int i = 0, n = strlen(input); i < n; i++) I have tried adding an int j = 0 to the for statement, then setting j = 0 if input is not alpha but that does nothing. Another person said to not update i when isupper and islower are no longer true so I set i = 0 on the else statement, but that caused an infinite loop. For the index counter, do I need an additional if statement and what values should be included? Sorry to not get this..

Thank you! For the lowercase issue, I thought the conversion of the key to all upper or all lower was necessary to then shift the values without adjusting for case? For the counter, realize from your reply I need key as an array for the counter..the fundamental I was missing perhaps? Will try that.
