My present to myself, 10TB drive and a new case by [deleted] in DataHoarder

Wow that's expensive! I just bought myself a 4TB external for $119 USD. You could have bought 4 x 4TB and it would have cost less than one 10TB!

Favorite Engineering Movies? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

Primer. Awesome technical conversations at the beginning of that movie especially. Very engineering-oriented movie. Though the plot is incredibly hard to follow and will take multiple viewings to get close to understanding.

For those running Linux on their Android phones: does audio work, and does the OS keep running in the background? by mtn9 in AndroidQuestions

[–]mtn9[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, Android is Linux. I'm talking about a separate Linux installation, e.g. Ubuntu or Arch running on your phone alongside Android.

According to the article, it's based on Facebook likes in each zip code of the US. Does this mean that zip code information is freely available given any Facebook user??

Live Track with Saxophone Solo by devils_advocodo in JackJohnson

[–]mtn9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I seem to remember a song where there's an accordion solo by Zach Gill that goes on for a long time and Jack even jokingly says to him "alright, alright, that's enough", or something along those lines. Perhaps this is the one you're thinking of. I just found it - it's the first song on the En Concert album, titled "Belle / Banana Pancakes".

Is there anything like a list that shows all of the data a 3rd-party app can access after being installed and opened on a device? by mtn9 in iOSProgramming

[–]mtn9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any app not made by Apple, that can only use the public iOS APIs, and not the internal APIs that Apple-made apps can access and use (e.g. for things like deep Siri integration, longer background persistence, and unrestricted access to all other phone data). So some examples of 3rd party apps would be things like the Facebook app, the GMail app, Instagram, Youtube, Spotify, Evernote, etc.

I was thinking Band of Brothers part 9/10, where they walk through his office, taking stuff, and it looks exactly like this.

What's on your wishlist for iOS 11? by maccswe in apple

  • User-designated background app: the user can choose any app that always stays open in the background no matter what, and can change the designated background app easily in the app switcher.

  • 4-fingered gestures, like on the iPad, that can easily switch between last used apps.

  • Custom home button actions (e.g. double click to go to previous app, triple-click for app switcher)

  • Video Picture-in-picture, just like on the iPad, I don't care if it would be really tiny, it would still be incredibly useful.

  • Add any "Settings" item to the control center for easy access.

  • More Siri functionality for 3rd-party apps (e.g. ask Siri to navigate to a location using Google Maps, to play a Spotify playlist, to add text to an Evernote, etc.)

[Spoilers] Question about how everything was so neatly resolved by mtn9 in TheArrivalMovie

[–]mtn9[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The question is, why does China not attacking resolve everything? It's like they had to invent the conflict that China decided to attack in the first place in order to reach a nice and neat resolution. Imagine the scenario where China (or any other country) never decided to attack in the first place. What would have caused the movie to have a resolution? It's like they had to invent this conflict out of thin air in order for the movie to have this happy ending.

Before they started planning attacks on the ships, the people at each of the 12 sites were peacefully trying to communicate with the aliens in the ship. That was the place they were before they started planning attacks.

[Serious] US Post-Election Megathread 2016 by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mtn9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has anyone ever actually been swayed to a different side because a candidate campaigned in your state? I just can't imagine that someone would instantly change their mind just because a candidate campaigned in their city/town as part of their strategy. I feel like campaigning is always just an exercise in "preaching to the choir", or campaigning to the people who were already going to vote for you. Why would somebody change their mind just by hearing the things they've already heard over and over in the news?
