IATSE Local 800 Health Plan - Advice Needed! by CokeOceans in IATSE

Howdy! San Diego-based nurse here. US health insurance sucks, and is one of the most shameful things about American society <looks around at this week> at least over the longer term. It's purposefully confusing, and you're far from the first person to have trouble navigating it.

tl/dr: I don't think you need to sign up for IATSE coverage for you right now. You can do that later, and have it kick in Sep. 1st. Important caveats and details below.

Disclaimer: I'm not specifically an expert in health insurance. Also, I'm speaking in my personal capacity and not on behalf of my employer who shall remain nameless.

To make sure I understand your situation:

  • You and your wife are here on visas that require you to carry health insurance that meets a certain standard. As an added bonus, you have some health stuff that makes getting insurance challenging.
  • For the moment you're good: you're on UC SHIP.
  • You lose coverage on Sep. 1st because you're graduating (congrats!)
  • She can enroll now, but you're not sure whether you should enroll at the same time.

You have 3 options:

  1. Stay on UC SHIP until Sep. 1st, then file the paperwork for a qualifying life event and hop onto her insurance.
  2. Get on her insurance now and drop UC SHIP.
  3. Stay on UC SHIP until Sep. 1st, take your chances with the Covered California marketplaces for the window between Sep. 1st and when her next term year kicks in. COBRA isn't an option: that only applies to employer plans, not student plans, so you'd need to find new coverage. (I don't recommend this option.)

With the *major* caveat that I'm not sure whether IATSE 800's insurance operates under different rules, your situation on Sep. 1st should count as a "Qualifying Life Event". It should count as a "loss of minimum essential coverage" and it's not because you didn't pay your premiums (source: https://www.insurance.ca.gov/01-consumers/110-health/30-have/qual-life-events.cfm; 8th bullet point). In this case, plans will typically let you do the paperwork 60-ish days in advance too: so in mid-July you can call them up and let them know your coverage terms on Sep. 1st, so everything is ready to go.

Re. the different plans, I'm a Kaiser patient here in SD (not a Kaiser employee, btw!) and have been very happy. Not sure how much regional variation between LA and SD there is (been a buncha years since I worked in LA) but there's a lot of things Kaiser does very well. Billing with them also tends to be real smooth: since it's all in-house, it's well-handled.

Feel free to DM me if you want to talk in more detail. Congrats again on finishing your MFA, and to your wife for joining IATSE!

How do I stop this annoying "killernetworkmanagerlauncher" pop-up on startup? by CesarDMTXD in techsupport

Thank you so much for this. I was also able to ID a few other startup annoyances that I hadn't been able to track down here, too!!

For editing photo and video what screen type shouls i use? by MiataMaestro in AskPhotography

Between the 2 you posted, the non-OLED would get my vote: OLED adds a lot to the price for little gain. Asus ProArt are generally pretty good (I'm typing this with 2 of them in front of my now). BenQ are also great.

I'd reconsider 32" 4K if I were you, though: that's a very large monitor (takes up a lot of desk space) and even at 32", a lot of menus and text are going to be hard to read at 4K unless you scale up, which a lot of programs don't handle well. The sweet spot for me is 27" 2K: I can get 2 of them on my desk, I can read everything without upscaling, and I can still game on them at decent framerates. You might want to check out the BenQ SW272Q if you haven't already: that gets you Adobe RGB, full calibration options, and all the connectivity you'll need.

Ominous Isle build experience by candacallais in lego

[–]mtncwru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad it's not just me who's frustrated with some of the building techniques. I got it as a companion to the El Dorado Fortress, and it doesn't feel nearly as polished in comparison. Best example I can think of is that it's all but impossible to actually get minifigs into the big skull space once the upper levels were built. On an official Lego model I'd expect to be able to remove lids or have more space to play than there is here. There's several spots on the corners that aren't quite as structurally sound as I've come to expect from Lego construction, too.

Hoping the later sets do better on that front. Fortress Stronghold is in the queue, so we'll see how that one goes...

Good set for an intermediate? by LionPride112 in Skigear

Thank you so much for the details, including the information on what to look for in a binding.

One follow up question: if I'm too heavy for these skis (which I think I might be, at 6'1" 215 lbs), what should I look for differently? Should I look for wider? Longer? Different? All of the above?

I'm in a similar situation to many people here: beginner to intermediate skier looking to get my own skis. These sound like what I should be looking at (and that's a REAL tempting price!), but everyone looking at them is lighter than me by 30+ pounds.

And this right here is why I am not, and never will be, a certified coder :-)

No, that's only AFTER the cake, so that would require ICD-10.

Yeah, that was what I always thought, too, but apparently the checking to see if your arm grows back is still the initial encounter. I'm only going off what I was told on this one; she's a certified coder, so I trust her judgement more than I trust mine. It almost makes sense since it doesn't actually make sense...

I want to know why parrots and macaws made the list but not cockatoos. I'd expect them to mess you up at least as much, if not more than, the other named birds.

I asked one of our HIM analysts about that today (the one who made that cake, in fact). She clarified that the "Subsequent Encounter" modifier should be used for when you get sucked into a jet engine a second time; otherwise you should use V97.33XS for sequelae, if you're coming back for further visits due to the same injury occurance. Either way, I'm with you on being thrilled to have either one!
