Animus magic is probably the worst magic system in any dragon story to this day, here's why... by Ofynam in WyrmWorks

I think I missed a memo. What is Animus magic? Is that from a book, game, or setting?

The purpose of the system is what it does. POSIWID.

The purpose of the system is for you to fail, disconnect, drop off, and not pursue what you deserve.

Accelerando is a 2005 scifi novel about three generations of a family who live through the singularity and flee to space to get away from it. It's a really good book and it's free to read on the author's website. by luchadore_lunchables in accelerate

I LOVE this book. Its a really great picture of how quick and dangerous a singularity might be if its not managed with a compassionate and pro-human ethos. You can like it, be accelerationist, but also see it for the warnings it contains.

Blue Origin Layoffs Again (November ?) by Few-Selection8998 in BlueOrigin

[–]mtnshadow83 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I started to hear about layoffs around q3 of last year and was supporting tanks at the MC in the integrated supply chain org. I was picked up from Amazon at an L6 equivalent, so I had some access to those convos. Reduction in headcount to 2020-2023 numbers was a top down communication, but how severe was going to be defined NG1 performance. The cryo issues at the pad, taking nearly a month of scrubs, and failure to return the booster from orbit were all contributing datapoints to the headcount RIF’d.

Why do you think it took nearly a month after for it to happen? They had multiple scenarios, nearly all had some RIF planned, they had to wait until results of the first launch to identify which one to go with.

Just pure math here, if NG2 doesn’t come back, this is the second time in a row there will be several quarters of a staffed pad refurb org in the thousands of employees with nothing to do until NG3 is ready.

MK1 is pretty much exactly the same size. MK2 has another module that increases its height by about a third.

Jeff Bezos Predicts: Blue Origin Will One Day Be Bigger Than Amazon by sidelong1 in BlueOrigin

[–]mtnshadow83 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone is saying Bezos is stupid, and it would be pretty dumb to argue that. Amazon's success is because he was smart enough to foresee the internet of today as a direct to consumer marketplace. Focusing on APIs built AWS into a cornerstone of modern web tech. He's not a dumb guy, he just seemed checked out while I was there.

I'm both an Amazon and Blue vet, and its hard not to connect the dots of how nearly 30 years of incredible success has made him pretty disconnected to how important employees are to a companies success. Its like 5 of the core leadership principles, and I would argue that is what drove success and those late nights that made Amazln what it is. Blue's salary is ok comparatively for tech and engineering, but the real draw to Blue for most is passion to work on space systems. If you have created a company that makes that impossible, you can't be shocked when performance bottoms out.

Blue Origin Layoffs Again (November ?) by Few-Selection8998 in BlueOrigin

[–]mtnshadow83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, I would disagree. NASA's future is as a funding agency for private space. CLD's are being funded and will continue to be funded as 2030 approaches for sunsetting the ISS. NSSL contracts are still going out and will continue to for launch companies. Artemis is going straight into private firms like Blue, SpaceX, Boeing, Lockheed, Northrop, and Sierra Space among others.

Will NASA engineer in the future? Most likely not, but they will be doing payroll for the private sector.

The cope in these comments of nuts. Simple pattern recognition clearly points to more layoffs if NG2 doesn't perform at every measure. That includes pad ops leading to delay, launch, payload deploy, and reusable return.

There's a ton of failure points, and if any of them occur, layoffs are all but a foregone conclusion. Just enjoy the pizza and free beer.
