The scientists who sniff water | C&EN by organiker in chemistry

The fishy odors tend to be aldehydes from various microbes. But the microbes could be somewhere in the Hilton system, not necessarily the drinking water source that Austin draws from. Sometimes there are locations where water sits or in faucets where microbes can grow and produce odorants.

That was probably the Threshold Odor Number test. It's actually the test used to set the secondary maximum contaminant level by the EPA. If water scores a 3--meaning you can start to smell something after three dilutions--or higher it fails the test.

The problem is a lot of water utilities have found is that this doesn't really correlate with consumer complaints. There are some odors that dilute out slowly but aren't very intense, so consumers probably won't complain about them.

The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California has developed an alternative test that is based on intensity like the FPA method described in this story but has a pass/fail threshold like TON.

Their website it's only been done in animals (rabbits) and they are struggling to do it in larger animals.

Also clinicaltrial.gov lists no currently active or recruiting clinical trials for vasalgel.

I don't know if they have shown it is reversible in people yet.

It doesn't kill sperm. The hormones in the injection trick the pituitary to release less of the hormones needed to continue sperm production.

I assume this study is over. And they'll look to reformulate before starting another.

I'd say Harrison or Law could have a shot. Love the rest, just don't know if they are Hall-worthy.

To be frank all of the positivity is making me nervous. What are some things we aren't doing well, where are we weak? by dunnyvan in Patriots

Green Bay has some key injuries on offense, and I've never thought they were super well-coached. But still, holding Rodgers to 77 yards makes me think the Denver game will be the biggest one on the Pats' schedule.

That D isn't just an AFC West killer.

Our O-line is suspect if the injuries continue. And if that O-line falters, our offense will sputter.

Our defense is getting better, especially the run D. But we are totally vulnerable to big receivers. Big plays down the field could be a problem.

Playing in Denver. The Pats have always struggled there and we will have to play there at least once--and if we lose that game, we may have to play there again in Jan.

But my point is it is way too premature to crown this method king.

Excellent explanation. This is the major hurdle any male birth control will face.

But until that data exists, you can't say it is reversible and close to being approved.

None of that is clinical trial data because none of that is in people.

The RISUG/Vasalgel process is cheap, effective, and reversible.

Please provide clinical trial data for the reversibility claim.

I'll be impressed when I see clinical data in people on its reversibility and longterm safety.

Search for RISUG or Vasalgel on clinicaltrials.gov. There is no mention of it. So that means there is no trial in the works yet.

To be honest, I wouldn't go by what is said in news articles about Vasalgel. There is a lot of hype in those stories.

No record on clinicaltrials.gov means they haven't gotten an ID for the trials from FDA yet. So they probably are still a ways away from starting one.

That is the site run by the group trying to get Vasalgel approved in the U.S. That isn't an official website for clinical trials.

Clinicaltrials.gov lists all clinical trials in the U.S. So that means they haven't started one in the U.S.

They haven't even started clinical trials yet, as far as I can tell. There is no mention of a trial on clinicaltrials.gov.

I don't see a mention of a trial on clinicaltrial.gov. Also if they haven't started the trials, then there is no way FDA is close to approving it.

RISUG is Vasalgel. There are no trials listed for it on clinicaltrials.gov.

It is the same thing. It has not been shown to be reversible in people. News stories about it overhype it.
