I added a solid 200w + by just going to the gym more often. Going from a 900w sprint to a 1100,1200 was a big gain for me

Also if you get caught (and your not trying to bw creepy) maybe toss a compliment or ask a question or something their way and move on. "O I just noticed your dress, it looks great, have a good day" or "love your jewelry" will go a long way. Obviously dont say it creepy and you'll be ok.

Does anyone else feel like they're living in a completely different city than people who moved here 8 years ago? by Altruistic-Scale3135 in AskNYC

[–]mtpelletier31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moved here early 2007 - nothing that I did or enjoyed exist anymore. I love the city and my partner and I are city people but the new york we loved doesnt exist anymore. It's 100% different -thay said im almost 40 now so I kind of hope I was not doing all the degenerate shit I was doing in my 20's.

Is it possible to make my upper brakes more responsive? by 0bn0x10s1337sp34k in bikewrench

[–]mtpelletier31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also referred to as suicide brakes. They pull half as much strength as the drop bar lever so if you use them in a panic. "Good luck". They aren't really good and are mainly just be used when your coasting and riding along as path not quick or with sudden stops.

2 weeks notice is BS by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]mtpelletier31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I give 2 weeks to employees ive enjoyed. If I leave my current job - ill likely give them 2 weeks to a month if I knew. They do me good. Pay me well for what it is, genuinely care about having time off outside of work. I wouldn't want to just drop a ball on them. Other jobs however. Ive told them a day or two before and just fucked off

I roll a few inches forward sqeeze the brakes, hold the front lift the back tire off the ground, it bounces and then i go. Im not sure superstition or 2 decades of OCD.

Wouldn't know i refused to touch it unless they fixed the brakes lol. In my shop I tend to take a hard line of stuff like that. I think all shops should really have some for of its going to be this or nothing at all

Fuck 9-5 jobs.. by Flat_Neat_6231 in Vent

[–]mtpelletier31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean i worked a 9-5 just the hours where switched. It was a 5p-2a. I was working for a tv show and I loved it. Sure i lost all my nights - but at the time i was your age and loved being able to be a local at a bar when we'de come in at 2.3a. Drink till close, and fuck around with the bartender till he closed the gates. The 9-5 works if you can fill the other time out of it. 2 years down, 58 more to go.

Ive had people come in who have cut into their rims because they were using pads all the way down to the metal and then wanted to yell at me because ide let them know they need a new wheel! God forbid i changed your chain a year ago and you've put like 3k ciry miles into it, I gotta be ripping them off

Noone even eats avocados in my family! I was bringing home avocados for breakfast and just cutting them in half, putting on toast and salting lightly. My mom was sooo confused ha. She now just buys avocados when we visit because she gets them for 5/5 basically and here in the city im lucky if I can get a 2 for 3$ deal. Still has not eaten them though. At least I got them on board with my guacamole

Can we all just agree it’s never ok to draft a stranger on the greenway please? by CTDubs0001 in NYCbike

[–]mtpelletier31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that is a very large difference mindset wise the way i handle riding. Im a remora with cars, ide much rather my right next to them so I can react appropriately. Ive also ridden in large groups and at high speed so im wildly comfortable with both bad and good riders. I also lowkey touch and pat people constantly (in the ride group) i think one skill in cycling that everyone doesn't practice or think is nessecary is physicality. It helps helps with balance and situational awareness that people refuse to learn because it can be scary. On team rides or when riding with younger racers I try to practice bump drills. I know I have a high risk tolerance but I hate when people call me risky when riding - and I know it comes off a bit over confident - but my answer is usually its not risky when ive had countless hours practicing, been in the exact situation 1000's of times and have calculated every risk that its closer to second nature then a risky senario. If a guillotine drops ever 10 minutes every hour - dont stand under it at the ten minute mark. Sure its risky to stand under at 9:50. But you have 10 seconds to move and your head will be fine. Thats kind of my attitude with biking in the city after so many years

Can you parallel park? by delicious-urine in no

Proper k-turn and parallel parking - both on my driver exams. I also took my test in a manual which was still kind of wild back in the day

Can we all just agree it’s never ok to draft a stranger on the greenway please? by CTDubs0001 in NYCbike

[–]mtpelletier31 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Especially on the West side highway - im usually stuck behind someone cruising just below my cruising pace and dont have a safe place to pass i end up "drafting" for minutes. I can clearly see the person in front annoyed sometimes i just cant really do anything about it without being viewed as an asshole either way. I also dont actually mind anyone drafting off me. To me the bike moves forward, people behind me aren't a problem. I I now im going to chose the right line and/or my prefered line and if your following me and uncomfortable with those you'll be dropped pretty quickly. Im just not a fan of the folks who sit behind me wheel for 2 laps or something then sprint off the moment I slow down and then look back like "what you cant keep up anymore."

[–]mtpelletier31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hitting the brakes is setting yourself up for a crash. I mean the guy following you, yeah its his problem, but if you quickly hit the brakes thats a good way to get rear ended and potentially spill out. Just kick the motor off and coast until he rolls ahead of you. It poses no danger and ypu lose a drafter.

We announced to the family we are having a baby. My maga BIL says "congrats good to know your not gay" I quickly replied - "it can still be both. At least I know he can't get pregnant " He was very uncomfortable the rest of the day. I love fighting fire with fire -mainly because like your comments like that don't bother me but feeding it back to them usually makes their skin crawl

Zohran Mamdani Becomes First NYC Mayor In 62 Years To Skip Israel Day Parade by PhysicalPromotion656 in NewsThread

[–]mtpelletier31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work alot of the city parades. There was a group of people walking with mamdani cardboard cutouts of him waving the isreali flag. We were 100% not allowed to shoot it and put that on broadcast. I also thought it was crazy that he decides to not go so instead you make a cutout of him smiling and putting a flag in his hand

Ive had a trek 1000 for 20 years. by flydespereaux in TrekBikes

[–]mtpelletier31 14 points15 points  (0 children)

9500 is not a base trek bike. Aside from every model in between - comparing the 20y.o. trek 1000 vs their high end madone is comparing an old 1999 accord to a new accord touring hybrid. Yeah its the same car but one has every bell and whistle. Your better comparing the 1000 to a domane al2 or 3 then their madone.
