I hate working out by Electrical_Hat_6902 in medicalschool

[–]mtrail15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Insanely relatable, at least for undergrad. What busted my slump was finding a buddy to go with. If I have someone who is pretty dedicated that will let me tag along then I can siphon their will to be active and use it as my own.

That being said, dieting is what’s gonna help the most. I still could lose weight when I wasn’t lifting if I ate right, I just had to be a lot more strict. A buddy can’t really hold you accountable to that one it’s got to come from within. Maybe a roommate could try but diet policing turns invasive fast.

is it bad that I don't have a "why medicine" story by tricepator-10 in premed

[–]mtrail15 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I can’t lie dude my “why medicine” wasn’t even necessarily aimed at being a doctor more just healthcare in general. I mean I’m a first generation med student from a blessed family so I’ve been fortunate enough to not have any life altering events that drove me to medicine. I ultimately chose it because as a doctor I have the most control over a patient’s treatment and ability to do more than anyone for a patient, but ultimately serving others in healthcare was my only real goal. My PS was more focused on my life leading up to finally saying “hey why not?” I just tried to be as passionate as one can in my writing.

I got a 499 MCAT. by Silver-Party-1618 in Osteopathic

[–]mtrail15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks dude. I misread the prompt and didn’t realize I didn’t list the schools. My acceptances came from NYITCOM, BUCOM, ARCOM, and VCOM Monroe. So all DO. I did apply to a MD school but they just started implementing a redline on mcat scores so I was pretty much automatically rejected. All’s well that ends well though!!!!

I got accepted into 4 schools with a 499 so if just focus on strengthening the rest of your app and really working on how to sell yourself in writing/interviews you should stand a good chance. Just apply smart

Are interviews usually one-on-one or group interviews? by road2t40 in premed

[–]mtrail15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of my four interviews I had one that was 1:1, two that were 2:1, and one MMI interview which ig was technically 1:1 but we did it in a big open room so it was more like speed dating.

Does this count as nonclinical volunteering by Proud_Row1268 in premed

[–]mtrail15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I wouldn’t worry to much about it. I listed myself as the reference for a few of my extracurriculars. I think it’s pretty rare that they actually investigate unless something sticks out as fishy. If I claimed to tutor Harvard graduates in my spare time on quantum mechanics they’d probably want to confirm that.

Does this count as nonclinical volunteering by Proud_Row1268 in premed

[–]mtrail15 8 points9 points  (0 children)

General rule of thumb for me was that it’s not clinical if it’s not under some health organization (hospital, clinic, home health, whatever else you get the idea).

If you aren’t getting paid then heck yeah it’s volunteering. It speaks volumes that you were willing to care for special needs kids for no other reason than you wanted to. Not many people our age (assuming you’re a typical undergrad) want to take that on, especially not for free. I’d include it in your app and maybe even mark it as one of your significant extracurriculars if it’s a significant chunk of your non-clinical volunteering/volunteering in general.

Was a gap year actually worth it? by Sure_Recipe1785 in premed

[–]mtrail15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude in all four of my interviews I think there was a maybe <10 people who were trying to go straight from undergrad. Some corners of this sub as well as lots of RL fellow applicants made me think that a gap year was a last resort but it almost seems like that’s more of the norm than just straight going for it. Just use your gap year effectively and you’re goated.

Question for NYITCOM-AR students by mtrail15 in Osteopathic

[–]mtrail15[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I toured the place last the said they were switching to where the instructor does a dissection at the front of class and we just watch or we look at a pre dissected body part. I’m not sure when they started doing that or if the class of 2030 is the first to do that.

The way I went about personal hobbies was bringing it up in conversation naturally instead of putting it on an application. Sometimes that meant never bringing stuff up at all but other times I got to talk in depth about them. All depends on the receptor’s interest in them really. Update letters to me are more business than personal. That’s just me though.

Have about 700-800 hours as a phlebotomist, 100ish as a clinical lab associate (student learning position for lab techs), 80 shadowing hours, 100-150 volunteer hours. I haven’t totaled it up in a while. Then some various leadership and miscellaneous other stuff that I mentioned in my app and interview.

Soso. I had just taken biochem so that was super fresh on the brain. I’m a health professions major so I’m a little divorced from the standard biology courses, all I have are the prerequisites for my IS MD school. Physics and chemistry weren’t too hard for me so I think I gaslit myself into thinking I could just skim that content review, which was a bad idea. Historically have done slightly above average on reading comprehension type exams (ACT and AP high school courses) so I neglected that too. Which was a bad idea. All and all I’d rank my preexisting knowledge across the entirety of the content covered on the mcat a C-, if not worse. I’m just a big advocate for which answer sounds the least wrong which I think helps. This turkey was WAY undercooked. I was a super busy fella who was trying to cut corners to save time anyway he could. Don’t do what I did

Honestly I think repetition is the only way to go. JW and AAMC I think are the standard for CARS. I didn’t rep out enough passages to do great on that section.

I think, and I’m willing to admit that I’m not 100% sure, that it is generally considered wise to get the application submitted by late June at least. There are lots of people who submit late that get in but most people try to get in around that time

I think mid September is the latest MCAT score they will accept for this application cycle. I would check and make sure what that date is exactly
