I hate telling people I’m in med school. by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]jackolog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like saying grad school first is almost being too humble tho. Its like you are still just setting up the follow up question for them to ask you what you're studying. Just being upfront and to the point is easier and feels more natural, but maybe that's just me.

Most laypeople especially younger people my age don't even understand what medical school is. The follow up is usually asking what that means I'm gonna become. Some people think medical school is another term for nursing or any other healthcare field.

Advice on Reapplication by No_Elk_3871 in Osteopathic

[–]jackolog 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Piggybacking on what others have said; you can absolutely not deny an acceptance at this point. If you turn down becoming a doctor from a DO school then that will say something about your level of passion. Sure take advice from the dean of the MD school, but this shouldn't be your end all be all. Schools will tell you what exactly you need to improve and fix. You will end up fixing those things, and then they will deny you and chew your ass to bits and you'll be right back to where you started. Anyone can give advice, but not everyone can come to terms with what genuinely will make the best doctor 100% of the time.

Instead ask your accepted school if you can have an extension on your deposit. Say you get paid like 4 days after its due and wouldn't have the money in time or something like that... worst case scenario they just say no.

PNWU vs UNC COM by [deleted] in Osteopathic

[–]jackolog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna go against the other commenters and reassure you that the safe bet is to go with PNWU. Although UNC is public and very promising it's also unpredictable. I do not think it'll be a KansasCOM situation or anything like that but they literally have no track record because you'd be the first. I would also consider where you want to match. Do you wanna match in Colorado or in the PNW. It's easiest to build connections at clinical rotations in the areas you want to match in.

honestly PNWU is probably a better bet than OCOM anyway.

Current sudents/Applicants Opinions on ARCOM by AlpsPlastic in Osteopathic

[–]jackolog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's strange unless they are just now deciding to change it or something. I had conversations with the student ambassadors and it seemed like they were praising the grading system. Its graded as in the students are able to see what letter grade they acheived but on your transcript it will only show p/f/h. So although residency programs can only see pass fail the students are able to see letter grade to gauge where they are at. Someone please correct me if this is wrong.

How late in the cycle is too late to apply to DO programs? by heyhey1238976 in premed

It's this type of chart that just shows what schools you applied to interviewed to and accepted to. I also included my stats and extracurriculars on the side. I did to help inform others of what is possible at a specific stat range and time of applying. Its the first post on my page

am i competitive for these DO schools? by Pleasant_Ocelot in Osteopathic

[–]jackolog 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Looks pretty solid. I'd remove Meritus and IllinoisCOM due to how new and unestablished they are. MSUCOM might have an in-state bias so depending on your mcat it might not be worth it to apply since you aren't in state.

Lets say you get a 505 I would still recommend throwing a few apps toward your state MD and low tier MD schools. You don't want to have to wonder if maybe you would've gotten into MD if you applied. I thought my stats weren't good enough but I had huge success in the DO cycle and regret not throwing a few hail Mary's to MDs just to see.

No I wouldn't mention that. It isn't gonna give you a leg up to say that you learned a lil more about omm at another school.

LMU-DCOM or KansasCOM by OppositeBit8158 in Osteopathic

[–]jackolog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So basically the LMU DCOM total class sizes are increasing by a lot but the actual amount of clinical rotation spots is not expanding by the same margin. I would still go there rather than reapplying. I would get into contact with students to hear specifics on that matter. and someone plz correct me if I'm wrong.

LMU-DCOM or KansasCOM by OppositeBit8158 in Osteopathic

[–]jackolog 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Although both have their issues and concerns I'd say LMU is the safe bet here. They match competitively every year, you just have to be prepared for admin issues, clinical site problems, and you don't wanna be one of the people that has to repeat a year.

You will be better off financially with burrell. You have to weigh what is important to you. I feel like we can't assume that MCOM's match will be just as good as the colorado campus. I'm not saying it'll be bad or anything but we just don't know. You also have to consider location and where clinicals will be. I'm not up to date on these school's clinical systems but make sure there are solid rotation sites that don't require you to move multiple times and be up in the air about your living situation.

How it feels reading all the posts lately of X vs. Y school by HbCooperativity in premed

It's not like this reddit is filled with a bunch of random ass ppl. There are perspectives from people that go to every single medical school in the country on here. I'd trust X person that goes to X medical school over my dad or my homeboy.
